As the weather gets warmer, our industry is heating up and things are getting busy. Are you finding the workers you need to keep up? With record low unemployment rates, skilled workers are hard to find. But through our many partnerships and programs we are working hard to identify talent, train that talent and even reduce your risk by subsidizing wages. But we need you to get involved. Let us know what your needs are; let us know what skills and training you require; then most importantly, check out the workforce development update below and call us to take advantage of what we have to offer.

Workforce Development Update:
Last month, we announced our partnership with JOIN, Inc and Reno's Eddy House. We are continuing to reach out into our local communities and are happy to announce another partnership; again with JOIN, Inc. This time the focus is the City of Reno's Reno works program. This program will bring High School Equivalency and job training to a select number of pre-screened, motivated homeless adults who are clients of the Reno shelter operated by Volunteers of American. There are many stereotypes about homelessness, but the fact is that many homeless individuals DO want to work. This program aims to provide them with the necessary training so that they can secure a job paying a living wage to lift them out of poverty and homelessness. These individuals go through a screening process as well as career exploration, mentoring and training. We are looking to our members to consider hiring these individuals once they complete their job training. Please consider getting involved in this amazing opportunity. It is just one of the ways we are working to build a skilled workforce and we can't do it without you!
In other news, Washoe County School District held an open house
for their new, state-of-the art manufacturing and construction technology facility at Sparks High School. Sparks High School currently runs a small furniture and cabinet making program which will be phased out. It will be replaced by a 3-year Construction Technology program. Other construction programs are on the drawing board in addition to the existing programs and Galena H
igh School and ACE Charter High School.
And the good news is not limited to Northern Nevada. In Las Vegas, Desert Rose High School has reopened it's Construction Technology program and offers pathways for high school students as well as through the Adult Education program.
The two largest districts in our state recognize the importance of our industry, but the key to ensuring success of these programs is industry involvement and support. Consider sharing your knowledge and experience by teaching a class or even a module; offer job shadowing, site visits, or consider being a classroom speakers or participate in a career day. Caught in/Between Injuries
Caught in/Between accidents have been recognized by OSHA as one of the "Fatal Four" hazards in the construction industry. Accidents of this nature only represent 5% of the injuries, however they tend to be the grizzliest. Caught in/Between accidents are when a worker's body part is caught, crushed, squeezed, compressed, or pinched between two or more objects. These kinds of accidents include cave-ins or collapsing materials, body parts pulled into unguarded machinery, equipment rollovers and being caught between equipment and fixed objects.
Here are some great ways to help workers prevent Caught in/Between injuries. Training workers to be familiar with the equipment they are working on or around, drawing attention to crush points, and pull-in areas. Shutting down equipment before working on it, making sure tires and wheels are chocked, and any stored kinetic energy is safely released. Standing clear of operators when there is an obstructed view and leaving a clear escape route if needed. Have workers wear close fitting clothing, removing jewelry, pulling up long hair, and wearing the proper gloves when needed.
