November Already!

Even though we've seen holiday decor as early as Labor Day and I've already heard my first Christmas carols of the season, if you are like me, holiday shopping starts this month. Won't you join me in considering local options first? Small businesses, especially those on Broadway enduring continuing construction nightmares, need our support to remain open year-round. If you prefer online shopping, many have websites for your convenience. Broadway Newport's new website offers a complete merchant list, links, parking options and more.

Without our locally owned shops, restaurants and service providers, our retail landscape would be reduced to strip malls, box stores and tourist traps-- that's not the Newport that I want to live in, how about you?

The Narrows Center for the Arts

celebrates their fifteenth anniversary this month with a packed schedule of perennial favorites including Samantha Fish on 11/9, Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band on 11/10, and Girls, Guns & Glory with Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys on 11/11. Neal and the Vipers play on 11/13, Tab Benoit on 11/14, the Squirrel Nut Zippers on 11/16 and Los Lobos on 11/17. Folk legend Tom Rush appears on 11/19, local favorites Roomful of Blues take the stage on 11/25 and Sarah Borges Band performs on 11/26-- visit the website for more.

Common Fence Music welcomes back Patty Larkin on 11/5 and the Gathering of Fiddlers & Fishermen #18 will be held on 11/19. Nory's on Broadway hosts Four Bridges on 11/2 and Hymn For Her on 11/9. The Newport Public Library presents the Newport String Project: A Symphony of Whales on 11/12. Sandywoods Music is the venue for the Rhode Island Songwriters Association's Semi-Annual Songwriter Showcase on 11/4. Other performances include 6-Digg-It on 11/11, Funny Little Planet on 11/18, Francisco Pais and Others on 11/19 (7:30) and A Farewell to Abbey Rhode ( their final concert) on 11/26. For something completely different check out the healing Gong Sound Bath on 11/19(6:30).

This month Ocean Mic, at Jimmy's Saloon starts a new format with feature performers opening each Thursday evening at 9pm. This month's features include an acoustic set by Jeff Michael Graham on 11/3, J-Earn's Bornday Bash on 11/10 and Lily Virginia on 11/17. Have fun!

The Jane Pickens Theater host both newportFilm: A Plastic Ocean on 11/1 and the Art & Design Film Festival from 11/10- 11/13. Festival films include The Happy Film on 10/10, Harry Benson: Shoot Firston 11/12, Harold and Lillian on 11/13. Two other Art & Festival films will be shown at the Newport Art Museum including Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun- A Touch of Grace and Hieronymus Bosch- Touched by the Devil on 11/11. Back at the Pickens you can see Loving on 11/30 as well as other films and "live" performances as listed on their frequently updated website. The Newport Public Library kicks off their Classic Holiday Film Series with White Christmas on 11/25 and the family film this month is Finding Dory on 11/26.

St. Joseph's Church Harvest Fair will be held on 11/5, that evening you can go Star Gazing at Ballard Park. On Sundays 11/6 and 11/13 enjoy the Greenhouse Open House at Blithewold Mansion, Gardens & Arboretum in Bristol. Ballard Park holds a Mushroom Hike on 11/12 and Greenvale Vineyards Harvest Fair is also on 11/12.

The 9th Annual Race for Open Space in Portsmouth will be held on 11/5, and don't forget the Newport Pie Run (5 miler) on Thanksgiving morning, 11/24.
