Kristen Girone
Kristen Gironesays she is excited to be a member of the JSRC. She lives in Manalapan with her husband and two kids. Kristen teaches middle school in Cranford, NJ. She says that in 2012 she decided she wanted to try and run a 5K…just one 5K and she would be happy. Fast forward to 2018 where after running many more miles and races in addition to that one 5K she set out to do, she found herself training for her first full marathon. She ran and completed the Marine Corps Marathon in October 2018 and became hooked. She hopes to run it again in 2019 and is working on her 9+1 for NYC 2020. She says "I have met so many amazing people throughout my first seven years as a runner and look forward to meeting many more through this club!"

Joseph Renzella Award Ceremony
Friday, February 15th.
The local community honored an American hero—our very own
Joe Renzella
at
VFW Post 2226 in Oakhurst
on February 15
. Joe was drafted into the Army in 1964 and served 10 years, doing three tours in Vietnam. He earned a total of thirty-five decorations for his bravery and valor under fire—including nine Battle Stars; four Bronze Stars (two
With Valor
); a Purple Heart; Vietnamese Staff Service Medal, Second Class; National Defense Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; nine Campaign Stars, two Good Conduct Medals, two Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, six Overseas Combat Bars and three Service Stripes. Club member
Major Jaime Hrzic
presented Joe Renzella with a Good Conduct Medal (third award) for the period 13 February 1970 through 12 February 1973 and the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service during the period 18 October 1968 to September 1969.
All who know Joe know how patriotic he is and his kind spirit. He is a very active member of JSRC and you can see him running with the flag in his patriotic attire.
|
|
|
was my honor to award a fellow Jersey Shore Running Club runner and my friend with two medals: the Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal, for his time served in the Army 50 years ago during Vietnam. Joe served ten years and did three tours in Vietnam; seeing combat in nine out of 17 campaigns.
Today, Joe can be seen at many of the local races wearing red, white and blue while running with the American flag. Joe is one of the most humble people you will meet despite earning more than 35 awards for valor and bravery which include a Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars (two with Valor, the highest designation). The world needs more men like Joe. He is the epitome of
Service Before Self
. I am proud to follow in the footsteps of this great military hero.
Major Jaime Hrzic

16th Annual Manasquan
Mid-Winter Beach Run
|
February 16 | Manasquan
The 16th Annual Manasquan Mid-Winter Beach Run was held Saturday, February 16.
Club member
Jack Mun
n sent us this photo of Dave DeMonico doing his traditional trumpeting for the runners!
Cheers to Race Director
Mary O'Brien
,
Gio Giaquinto
, Manasquan Rescue Squad, volunteers and all involved, for another successful fun event.
It was a really great day - with nearly 1100 finishers!

It was such a great day to run that Running Royalty—aka Penny & Phil Hinck— were spotted on the Manasquan Mid-Winter Beach run! Having helped at the start and finish (and other aspects of the race) for all of the 15 previous Beach Runs (plus hundreds of other Shore Area races for decades), Phil and Penny Hinck changed direction and actuallyRAN a race! They used to race often, but increasing race management duties over the years had limited their running. It was greatr to see them both on the course again!
