Lake Nona Middle School

We had four major seasonal events this past school week (see below) and I would like to thank all of our Knights, their teachers, their coaches, their parents, and the community members that made each evening such a success! This week we continue with another round of special events starting Monday when our Boys Volleyball team faces Avalon Middle School in the playoffs. Our Knights have earned a spot in the Final Four and they will be playing the Huskies here at home. Please come on out and cheer on the team as they compete for the County Championship!

Please also do not forget that this is the last week for our SGA Toy Drive to benefit about 40 families from Three Points Elementary School. Anything you might be able to donate to help brighten these elementary school students' Holiday Season would go a long way (details below). Thank you for your kindness.

Lastly, both our Chorus and Band have special seasonal events planned for this week. Each promises to be a terrific production, so consider bringing the whole family out for a little Holiday cheer! After all . . . 'Tis the Season!

In Knights Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Always remember Knights, if you ever see or hear anything suspicious or unusual, please mention it to any teacher, coach, or staff member right away.
Thank you.

Volleyball Season Recap / Boys Head to Final Four at Home

Boys Volleyball
After defeating Apopka on Wednesday night, our boys volleyball team advances to the Final Four for their third consecutive year!

After an hour delay, Apopka walked into the Kingdom with a team full of 6 footers that looked like the Orlando Magic; they definitely made their presence known. Nerves were high and you could sense the tension in the building during warm-ups, as both teams got prepared for their big game. It didn't take long for our gentlemen to set the tone as they played their style of volleyball. After some tremendous defensive stops by our libero Cesar Yanez, we knew we were going to give this team a run for their money. One of my many favorite sayings is "Offense wins games and defense wins championships." We have defense! Our gentlemen got team captain, Jariel Giraud, going early. After a few stops and great execution, setter Antonio Medina was able to perfectly feed our attacker Giraud the ball for some amazing kills. Apopka had absolutely no answer for this. Giraud must have had at least 20 kills in Wednesday night's game. It didn't matter where on the court he placed it, it was not getting returned. We have offense! There was no turning back for our Knights who remained focused and finished out the game in their traditional two sets.

Our gentlemen have home court advantage on Monday as they face our former rival -
Avalon Middle School at 5:30pm.

Lady Knights
Our Lady Knights traveled to Bridgewater Middle School where they faced the four-peat county champions. The Knights knew this was not going to be an easy one, but they went there prepared and with purpose. Our ladies battled back from a 0-7 point deficit early on and competed. They lost the first set 18-25. However, our ladies kept fighting, getting their hands on everything and diving for every ball they found within reach. They made some outstanding plays. Coach Vazquez used every trick in the book and coached until the last point, but Bridgewater simply had too many weapons.

We are extremely proud of our Lady Knights volleyball team and Coach Vazquez for their winning season and for continuing our Knights tradition of making it to playoffs.

Knights in the Spotlight: "Latinos in Action"

Ana Hamana and Juan Ferreira from LNMS LIA 2018 class were picked to be in one of the promotional posters for the LIA 2018 Conference. We are proud of their leadership and commitment to both school and community service.

Knight Music
WKMG-TV - December 25th, 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm

Our students will have a performance in the WKMG-TV Channel 6 during the noon to 12:30 pm time slot on Christmas Day! They are a part of their Sounds of the Season 2018.

Winter Concert
Our LNMS orchestra created musical memories Thursday night during the Winter Concert. Students entertained the audience with: Little Drummer Boy, themes from The Nutcracker, and the Ukrainian Bell Carol just to name a few of the music pieces from the concert. We would like to thank Ms. Rudzik, orchestra director, and Ms. Rutan, piano accompanist, for their dedication and artistically memorable performance to begin this holiday season!

Full STEAM Ahead Knights

LNMS students and teachers presented a variety of exhibits and student projects on the different aspects of STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. We had a math maze and paper airplane contests; Virtuali-Tee shirts that demonstrated the human body; Mr. Chemistry used fire to demonstrate chemical reactions; art gallery in the foyer; virtual reality explorations and robotics toys; plus local vendors supporting our school with quality products.

Some of the 70 science fair projects will now move on to the Orange County Science Fair to compete with other middle school students. The Spanish Honor Society (La Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica) offered translation services for parents or students that needed extra help that night. This event is important because it shows students of all ages how STEAM works in their everyday lives and maybe in their futures!

Knight Science Classes Watch Launch
SpaceX resupply launch on Wednesday, December 5

More than 5,600 pounds of research, crew supplies and hardware left Earth at 1:16 PM last Wednesday to head to the orbiting International Space Station. (This year is the ISS' 20th anniversary.) SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to arrive at the International Space Station on Saturday, December 8. More than 250 science and research investigations will occur onboard including 40 mice to probe the mechanisms behind aging.

Our students watched from the school grounds on Wednesday (left) with interest since they have been designing and performing their own earthbound science fair experiments this semester.

REMINDER: 5th Annual SGA Toy Drive
Helping 40 families with elementary age children at the Holiday Season

As you know, the holiday season is upon us and, with that, the giving spirit. SGA is announcing one more drive to end the year. SGA would like to welcome you to the 5th Annual Holiday Toy Drive. Ever since Hurricanes Irma and Maria last year, our community has needed our help more and more.

The Lake Nona Middle School SGA has teamed up with Three Points Elementary School to help out many of those in need. Three Points Elementary School, which is located near Lee Vista & Goldenrod, is categorized as a Title 1 School. Not only having students already there needing help, Three Points has received many kids from surrounding counties and countries. This toy drive is to help those kids in need and others at that school that are less fortunate.

Three Points Elementary has given us a list of about 40 students that are considered homeless or really have nothing for the holidays. SGA would like to ask for your help in giving them the holiday they never have expected!

The Toy Drive will be held from Wednesday, November 28th through Friday, December 14th, 2018. The Toy Drive will go through all first period classes. First period classes will collect items and SGA will collect the items every Tuesday after school, as well as on Friday, December 14th. For collection days, all you need to do is place your items outside your door.

To make this more interesting, and to help more of the community, all first period classes will be in competition with each other! The winning class will receive a gourmet breakfast, donated by SGA.

Points will be awarded per item. Weekly updates will be sent out to notify first period classes of their standing. Any first period class can participate, no matter the number of students!

Below is a list of items that can be donated. Thank you very much for any help you might be able to give.

** AGE RANGE: 4-12 years **

Toys
Games
Dolls/stuffed animals
Books
Art supplies

** ALL ITEMS MUST BE NEW IN THEIR ORIGINAL BOXES/PACKAGING **
