Springing Forward at the Library
Community gathered to celebrate the new library at the ribbon-cutting ceremony in 2016.

It's hard to believe that on Thursday, March 21, the Edgartown Library begins its fourth year of service from our new facility next-door to the Edgartown Elementary School. As our third year here concludes, we're still discovering opportunities that the platform of this this new civic center provides to enrich the life of our community.

Remember to set your clocks forward an hour on the night of Sunday, March 10. And also remember to read below for the full list of events at the library this month, when winter finally turns to spring. We've lined up opera and yoga, cult films and cooking class, public forums and a new Portuguese story hour, book groups and a food distribution event.

We look forward to seeing you at the library in March.

Lisa Sherman,
Director

****   FILMS   ****
Join the Cult:
New Film Series Opens
Wednesdays at 7 p.m.
beginning March 6

Our new eight-film series, extending into May, features films that have achieved cult status -- each with a fiercely devoted audience, many with recognizable catch-phrases now embedded in the matrix of our language. These programs are for adults only.

Blade Runner
6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6

A blend of science fiction and noir, Blade Runner was originally a box office and critical bust. But its unique postmodern production design became influential within the sci-fi genre, and the film gained a significant cult following. Directed by Ridley Scott, the film stars Harrison Ford fresh from his Raiders of the Lost Ark success.
(US, 1982)

Note: No Film on Wednesday, March 13

The Princess Bride
7 p.m. Wednesday, March 20

Hard to categorize (a fantasy/romance/comedy/adventure fairy tale?) The Princess Bride was well-received by critics when first released but saw only modest box office success. Yet with its quotable dialogue, talented cast, and great source material -- William Golding adapted his own book -- director Rob Reiner's film deserves its cult status.
(US, 1987)

Grey Gardens
7 p.m. Wednesday, March 27

The only documentary in the series, Albert and David Maysles' film depicts the everyday lives of Edith Beale and her daughter, Edie Beale, impoverished relatives of Jacqueline Onassis, in wealthy East Hampton, NY. A perfect mix of camp and deep emotionality, the film's cult status grew around "Little Edie," and her eccentric creativity and boundless joie de vivre. (US, 1976)

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3

A satire that satirizes everything, 44 years after its release it remains the gold standard in subversive comedy. Sometimes witty, other times goofy, it's always over the top. Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones co-direct the whole Python gang.
(UK, 1975)

Popcorn Movie Night:
Mary, Queen of Scots
6 p.m. Tuesday, March 5

It's the two magnificent queens, Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I and Saoirse Ronan in the title role, who will keep you watching, even when the historical chess game becomes a little convoluted. Directed by Josie Rourke.
(UK & US, 2018)
Dames in Action Series:
Two Saturdays in March

These two films continue our mini-series featuring four formidable "Dames" -- Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins, and Joan Plowright, the recent subjects of the documentary "Tea with the Dames."
These screenings are for adults only.

Gosford Park
2 p.m. Saturday, March 2

Dames Maggie Smith and Eileen Atkins are just two of the many great British actors showcased in director Robert Altman's  cunning upstairs-downstairs mystery. (UK & US, 2001)

Notes on a Scandal
2 p.m. Saturday, March 9

A juicy psychological drama with a tight script and excellent performances, this film features Dame Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett. Directed by Richard Eyre.
Contains sexual situations and graphic language.
(UK & US, 2006)
****   MUSIC   ****
Opera Club Matinee:
Das Rheingold
1 p.m. Sunday, March 10

This month we'll be screening Robert Lepage's stunning production of Wagner's Das Rheingold, the first of the four operas known as "The Ring of the Nibelung."

The excellent cast includes Bryn Terfel as Wotan, Eric Owens as Alberich, and Stephanie Blythe as Fricka.  James Levine conducts the mesmerizing score.  Filmed live at the Metropolitan Opera in 2010.

Played without intermission, the opera runs
2 1/2 hours. All adults are welcome.
Name That Tune!
An Evening of Fun for Music and Trivia Lovers
7 p.m. Tuesday, March 12

Join  us for a grown-up party game based on the classic TV show, Name That Tune, where guests are challenged to name songs with just a little information and a few notes.  This is a fun, competitive game for music and trivia lovers, complete with prizes and refreshments.

The best part is we'll have live music, with pianist Adele Dreyer sending out the tunes. Adele is well-known on the Island for performing classical music, but she has a repertoire of hundreds of songs, including pop, show tunes, the great American songbook, and even TV show themes.

We'll break the group into teams, so don't worry about coming solo. Call the library to register for this free program.
**   Classes, Forums & Other Programs   **

Town Forum on Rental Tax
6 p.m. Wednesday, March 13

Legislation passed last year by Massachusetts lawmakers extends state and local occupancy taxes now paid by hotels and motels to short-term rental properties. Edgartown is holding a "listening session" to hear citizens' thoughts about this new tax, and the proposal that it be used to create a housing bank, at 6 p.m. in the library's program room. All are invited.
Edgartown Candidates Forum
3 p.m. Saturday, March 16

The League of Women Voters of Martha's Vineyard is sponsoring a candidate forum prior to the local elections. The public is invited to attend and listen to their Edgartown candidates as they present their positions. There are contested races this year, and there should be some lively discussions. All candidates and voters are invited to attend.

The League is a non-partisan organization that promotes active and informed citizen participation in government, in voting, and in influencing public policy through education and advocacy.
Slow Cooking Class
This Month's Recipe: Chicken Blanquette
1 p.m. Tuesday, March 19

Dust off your slow cooker and learn the easy way to prepare world cuisine.
This month's crockpot recipe is the classic Chicken Blanquette, a chicken stew as only the French could devise. Made with tender morsels of chicken, plump mushrooms and herbs in a creamy wine sauce, it's the perfect dish for a special dinner, but easy enough for a weeknight meal. Join us to learn the method and sample the delicious results.

Class size is limited, so please call or stop in to register.
Library Book Group
4 p.m. Wednesday, March 20

Our book for discussion at the library this March is Asymmetry, by Lisa Halliday.

Hailed by The New York Times as "a scorchingly intelligent first novel," Asymmetry deftly weaves together two stories -- of a May-December romance between a 20-something publishing assistant and an eminent author, and a slowly unspooling tragedy about an Iraqi-American family.

All are welcome to join the discussion. The library has available copies to check out if you're interested -- just ask at the front desk.
Healthy Food Distribution
Friday, March 22 from noon to 2 p.m.

The Martha's Vineyard Vegan Society will have its next Healthy Foods Giveaway Day at the library from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, March 22. Come enjoy a healthy snack and grab a bag of fresh fruits and vegetables, free of charge.

The giveaway is to promote healthy, plant-based diets on-Island. Members of the society will also be here to answer any food-related questions and chat about veganism. One bag per adult, while supplies last.
