AMO PLANS LIVING WELL

December 2018

A Healthier Holiday
The holidays can be a wonderful time of year with joy, cheer, and gratitude in abundance. They can also become a source of stress and anxiety. By incorporating just a few of these healthy practices, you and those around you can enjoy a healthier, happier, holiday season!

Plan your time and create a master calendar of events and activities that you want to do this holiday season. Organize
your time by ranking items as high, moderate and low priority. Focus first on the high priority items. Review your low priority items and remove them from your list, if possible. Reschedule commitments and appointments that can wait until after the holidays. Work to maintain your personal and time boundaries and learn when to say "no", if necessary. Try not to overextend your holiday commitments. Share household responsibilities with your family. Trying to be everything to everyone causes burnout.

Plan your finances
Minimize or avoid holiday financial stress by following a healthy spending strategy. Create a financial budget for gifts, travel and activities and then stick to it. Make sure to communicate your plan to your family and friends. Consider less expensive gifts that can be just as meaningful such as baked goods or music playlists. Instead of giving gifts, arrange a potluck dinner or dessert gathering. Your friends and family will appreciate the money savings and the extra time together.

Plan for Health in the New Year
Give a gift that supports good health in the year ahead (or give suggestions if friends and family are asking for ideas for you). Here are some ideas for giving wellness for the holidays: Healthy cookbook, Indoor or outdoor bicycle, subscription to health or healthy cooking magazines, health or gym membership, home exercise equipment or fitness tracker.

Set aside differences, try to accept family members and friends as they are, even if they don't live up to all of your expectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. Be understanding if others get upset or distressed when something goes awry. Chances are they're feeling the effects of holiday stress.

We all know giving helps others , whether we volunteer for organizations, offer emotional support to those around us or donate to charities. But studies show that giving is also good for the giver by boosting physical and mental health. Studies find
these health benefits associated with giving: Lower Blood Pressure, increased self-esteem, less depression, lower stress levels, a longer life and greater happiness.
