Nurturing Faith Ideas
Nurturing Faith Ideas are weekly suggestions and activities from the Presbytery's Nurture Committee to link worship and home and to nurture faith development in the family. They are intended for all ages and family types. Add one to your bulletin each week or put them in your monthly newsletter. They could also be sent via email or added to a Facebook page. In 2019, they are organized around a common theme each month. Ideas for the entire year can be found

As our PC(USA) worship resources remind us, the season of Lent is a time for prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the resurrection of the Lord at Easter. It is a period of 40 days - like the flood of Genesis, Moses' sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah's journey to Mount Horeb, Jonah's call to Ninevah to repent and Jesus' time of testing in the wilderness. (For those of you doing the counting, the Sundays in Lent are not counted in this reckoning of the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, as every Lord's Day is a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.) Think about 40 days. Does it seem like a short amount of time? A long period of time? Remarkably, a lot can happen in 40 days. Think about periods or seasons in your own life. Have you experienced something transformational in a period of 40 days? Commit to making the next 40 days meaningful.

The Season of Lent is traditionally a time when many faith communities equip and nurture candidates for baptism and confirmation. In Baptism, we celebrate the grace of God that cleanses us from our sin and enfolds us into the Christian family. Our baptism is a glorious, free gift, and from it, we are also launched into our Christian calling. Reflect on these two things this week: the grace of God and God's call in your life to active Christian service. How do they inform and strengthen each other?

 The season of Lent gets off to a late start this year since Easter doesn't arrive until April 21. Usually by this time we have already been smudged with ashes and started our journey towards the cross. It also means that we have probably at least considered, even if we aren't consistently practicing, what kind of Lenten discipline we will follow this year.
Traditionally, people give up things during Lent. Other
people choose to take on an additional Lenten discipline.

 Traditionally, we use the time of Lent for prayer, fasting and almsgiving. As we become more aware of the effect of human activity on the Earth, we can think about fasting from some of our energy use, fasting from some of the "stuff" that we don't need and that harms the environment, and taking positive steps to restore nature. Included in this article are a few ideas to get started.

Many of us have fond memories of our college and young adult years; h
owever, for a growing number of college students, young adulthood is a time when depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns are increasing. On April 8, Westminster Foundation is hosting Soul Shop for Collegiate Ministries, a daylong training for leaders in campus ministry settings to learn how to minister to people impacted by suicidal desperation. (Later in the year, the Presbytery will host an event for congregations.)

A large Tervis tumbler with a metal straw was found following the Feb. 16 Presbytery meeting at Kanawha United. If this is yours, please contact Amy Robinson at [email protected] or 304-744-7634 and describe the design. We can then find a way to get it back to you.

Spring 2019 in various locations
All pastoral leaders are required to complete a Healthy Boundary Training workshop every five years.
All pastoral leaders who have not completed a Healthy Boundary Training workshop after 2014 must attend an event by June 15, 2019. They will be offered in a variety of locations within the Presbytery.

is the theme of this year's Festival of Faith. Brian McLaren will present the keynote on "
Being Church in a Time of Division." There will also be workshops, a Presbyterian Publishing House bookstore, several mission/ministry partners and more.

runs July 16-20 at Purdue University in Indiana; however, the presbytery's delegation will gather the evening of July 15 for community building and preparation for an early departure on July 16. Register your church's participants now!

he Rev. Dr. Amy Parker has a love of the arts. So much so, she not only has her Master of Divinity degree, but she also went back to seminary 30 years later to get her Doctor of Ministry degree in Arts and Theology.
As the Minister of Education and the Arts at
Village Chapel Presbyterian Church
, Amy is now doing all that she can to inject her passion into the congregational life and surrounding community. Fortunately, the church's pastor, the Rev. Dr. Todd Wright, shares her vision. Their first project came to fruition in early December with an art show and open house at the church.
