YARRELL, William (1784-1856)
 
William Yarrell was a London businessman, stationer, bookseller, naturalist, zoologist and acquaintance of Charles Darwin.  He was a member of several science and natural history societies, including the Linnean Society of which he subsequently became treasurer, He was a founder member of both the Zoological Society of London and the Entomological Society of London. It was to Tegetmeier that Darwin wrote on hearing of Yarrell's death, lamenting 'our old & excellent friend'.

TOLAND, John Willard [1912-2004]
 
John Willard Toland (1912-2004) was an American writer and historian, best known for his best-selling biography of Adolf Hitler. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1971 for his history of World War II-era Japan entitled The Rising Sun.

This collection includes approximately 400 pp. of annotated tss. of stories and novellas, 1 ms. notebook (60 pp.), 60 letters, 50 b&w photos (army related, amateur shows and skits), and 4 programs.
The collection pertains to the early period of his career 1936 to 1950's when he desperately aspired to be a playwright, short story writer, and novelist.  Looking back on this unsuccessful period of his life as a writer, he claimed to have written 6 complete novels, 26 plays, and a hundred short stories before completing his first sale, a short story for which The American Magazine paid him $165 in 1954.

MITCHELL, Donald Grant (Ik Marvel) [1822-1908]
 
Donald Grant Mitchell, pseudonym Ik Marvel, was an American essayist and novelist known for nostalgic, sentimental books on American life. He is particularly known for his essay collection, Reveries of a Bachelor, which focuses on the dream-like lives of mid-nineteenth-century Americans. His other works include Doctor Johns (1866) and My Farm of Edgewood: A Country Book (1863). In 1846, he wrote newspaper articles for the Morning Courier and New York Enquirer under the pseudonym Ik Marvel. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., called him "one of the pleasantest of our American writers."

Taylor, Bert Leston was a journalist, doggerel poet, and humorist. At the height of his literary career, he was a central literary figure of the early 20th century Chicago renaissance as well as one of the most celebrated columnists in the United States .
William Bliss Carman (poet, essayist, journalist). As an integral member of the Confederation School of Canadian poetry, Carman's work helped to shape a poetic voice in Canada. He is best remembered as a lyrical poet of the Maritime landscape.

Christopher Hammond Fry was an English poet and playwright. He is best known for his verse dramas, notably The Lady's Not for Burning, which made him a major force in theatre in the 1940s and 1950s.

BATES, Arlo [1850-1918]
 
Arlo Bates was an American author, educator and newspaperman. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1876. In 1880 Bates became the editor of the Boston Sunday Courier (1880-1893) and afterward became professor of English at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1900.

ATHERTON, Gertrude Franklin Horn [1857-1948]
 
Gertrude Atherton was a prominent and prolific American author. In addition to novels, she wrote short stories, essays, and articles for magazines and newspapers on such issues as feminism, politics, and war. Atherton was an early feminist well acquainted with the plight of women. She was strong-willed, independent-minded, and sometimes controversial. Charlotte S. McClure in a Dictionary of Literary Biography essay said that Atherton "redefined women's potential and presented a psychological drama of a woman's quest for identity and for a life purpose and happiness within and beyond her procreative function".

In original dark green cloth neatly rebacked and with most of original back-strip laid down. Lacks half-title and with the list of subscribers.
Inscribed: "To Brother Wyld from the Author Brother Rolph".
Rolph was the emigration agent for Upper Canada and the province of Canada from 1839 to 1843. Very good condition. TPL 2546

Notebook supplied by 'Robert Thatcher Stationer, on Dukes Court, near St Martin's Court, London. Sells all Sorts of Stationary, Bibles, Common Prayers &c at the Lowest Prices' (label on front pastedown). Limp roan, paper-backed covers; unlined paper (vertical chainlines) interleaved with purple blotting paper.
George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, KG, PC was a British statesman of the Georgian era. Due to his success in extending American commerce he became known as "father of the colonies". President of the Board of Trade 1748-61, he aided the foundation of Nova Scotia, 1749, the capital Halifax being named after him.
This a manuscript account of the death and its aftermath of George MontaguDunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax. A British-style settlement, complete with a balanced constitution, common law and free and non-military earned land tenure. 9-1/2 x 7-1/2 inches. Autograph letter signed. Two pages, Dated (on the Rhine 20th May 1833. Two pages, 4to. With postscript on verso by his wife Margaret, also a writer. To his wife's mother, Lady Hunter. Basil Hall's letter reads: "My dear Lady Hunter, I write merely to report of myself and to mention that here we are safe and sound and all happy and merry with our journey. We came here on Sat. Eve. And passed yesterday chiefly with Mrs. Hoover and her family. Mr H. Is in England. In the evening Mr. Schlegel and other intelligent oxalises of both sexes came to Mrs. Homers. This day we go to Coblentz by the Steam Boat and then we propose going on just as before. The weather is delightful still. We have a famous thunderstorm on Sat. Eve. After we got here which has cooled the air and laid the dust. My journal for the young folks goes merrily - I hope it may amuse hem. Perhaps Mgt [Margaret] might add a line to you. Mr. Dollard of St. Paul's Churchyard is to send a Box to meet me at Geneva and by it you may send any odds and ends. DS, 2pp, 7.75 x 12.75 in., Johnstown, Tryon County, NY, 15 Dec. 1774 (Fifteenth year of the reign of King George the Third). Legal document regarding a debt, signed by Hendrick Frey, Judge.
Condition: Folds and toning as expected otherwise very good. All mounted on larger sheets with cut-outs so both sides visible.

John, patriot and Hendrick (Heindrick) Frey, loyalist of Canajoharie, brother against brother in the American Revolution.
Colonel Hendrick (Heindrick) Frey (1734?-1827) and his brother, Major John Frey (1740-1833), were the grandsons of Heinrich Frey, a native of Zurich, who settled on the Mohawk in the late seventeenth century. Major John Frey became an active and dedicated patriot. Paper size is 17-1/2" x 23-5/8". Plate mark size is 10-1/2" x 13". Image size is 5" x 7".
Signature Imprint:  Lord Stanley [facsimile signature], Stanley family motto, "Sans Changer" or without changing. Printed image of Lord Stanley with different toned white background is mounted on a larger heavier white sheet with black imprinting. Overall engraving as been washed and cleaned and some minor paper repairs made to top left corner and bottom left corner with only a couple of minor darker marks remaining. Engraved printed image of Stanley is very nice. Overall condition is near fine now.

Print beautifully framed ((UV resistant glass) and incorporate the famous poem he is rumored to have quoted crossing the river and  taking Quebec -  from Gray's  Elegy ... "The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power, And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave, Await alike the inevitable hour: The paths of glory lead but to the grave."

"Now, gentlemen," said he, when he had finished, "I would rather be the author of that poem than take Quebec."
This was the poem Wolfe was said to have rather written than take Quebec.

Marked PERSONAL. Writing with appreciation and comments about the Suez Crisis of 1956,, and noting: "I was quite sure that in time the purpose I had in mind would be understood. KING, William Lyon MacKenzie, [1874-1950]

September 15, 1937, 8 x 6 1/4 inches, 4pp., Letter, is two (2) typed pages with MacKenzie's handwriting inserted, originally folded  now flat, with 3/8 inch tear on top edge and 1/4 inch tear on bottom edge, otherwise very good condition. Typed signed letter (TSL) with MacKenzie King signature and mention of Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1937 to May 1940 as well as WLMK's family roots connections.

Mrs. Mary Scott, Toronto, Ont. A friend of MacKenzie's parents and whom he had ongoing personal correspondence with after this. WLKM had very few friends or family and rarely showed his private side in public which makes these type of personal communications insightful and rare. Highly collectable.

John Holland (1734.1807) - printmaker; British (of Peterhouse, Cambridge. Etcher.) Pencil sketch or drawing on heavy paper, cut in an oval shape, 6" high by 5" wide approximately.

On the bottom right quadrant of the portrait a tiny but,  visible  monogram, reading JH 1753. (John Holland?)
ON the reverse of the drawing is written, "John Holland Esq.  and farther below a date of 1753.

 In part, A Declaration by the Representatives of the United Colonies of North-America, now met in Congress at Philadelphia, setting forth the causes and necessity of their taking up arms. ... Parliament was influenced to adopt the pernicious project, and assuming a new power over them, have in the course of eleven years, given such decisive specimens of the spirit and consequences attending this power, as to leave no doubt concerning the effects of acquiescence under it.
 They have undertaken to give and grant our money without our consent, though we have ever exercised an exclusive right to dispose of our own property; statutes have been passed for extending the jurisdiction of courts of admiralty and vice-admiralty beyond their ancient limits; for depriving us of the accustomed and inestimable privilege of trial by jury, in cases affecting both life and property; for suspending the legislature of one of the colonies; for interdicting all commerce to the capital of another; and for altering fundamentally the form of government established by charter, soldiers upon the colonists in time of profound peace.
