Middle School Environmental Science Symposium
SVA Middle School students will present their findings on environmental problems and solutions as examined by data science at their spring PBL event this weekend.
Please come out to one of four sessions and see the amazing work our scholars have done. Our middle school scholars never fail to impress. F

Conference Care
There will be no school on conference days, March 7-8. Our After School Program is offering
care from 7:30AM-4:30PM.
The days will include special activities, crafts, and fun!
Meals and snacks will NOT be served, so please be sure to send food for the day with your child.

Half Day: $12.50 for up to 4.4 hours*
Full Day: $25 for 4.5 or more hours*

You may indicate whether your child will attend full or half days but we will charge based on time in and time out.
You
WILL be charged the half day rate if you leave your child only during your scheduled conference time.
Families who purchased the Unlimited Flat Rate Plan for after school care incur no additional charge for these days, but please do sign up if you plan for your child to attend so that we can plan staffing accordingly.

This Week in Middle School
This Thursday, SVA middle school took a field trip to Fresno.
They brought together their studies of art in context and environmental issues by analyzing the work of Bryan David Griffith at the Fresno Art Museum. Then they were introduced to university life on a Fresno State tour by our own CSUF alums, Mr. Padilla and Miss Romero.

Admissions Update
Thank you so much to all of those in our community who have been helping spread the word about our amazing schools

Our annual admissions lottery was held last week. It's always a joyful and emotional experience for both our staff and prospective families.
If you or someone you know are on the waitlist, please don't lose heart.
There's a lot of time between now and the end of next school year! We call families from the list generated at the lottery until the last day of school in 2019!
Stay
committed and stay in touch. The best way in is to be
prepared to say "yes" to that phone call. Many of our
students have come in through the waitlist.
Continue to hold high expectations of your learner and your school and continue to be an active parent advocate.

We plan to offer summer enrichment opportunities again this year in four one week sessions. Sessions will be open to students entering grades 1-5 in the fall.

Have you "
Marie Kondo'd" your morning routine?
In my first year at SVA and after many years working with children with special needs, I've found some amazing strategies that have helped our students-- and my own family-- "Marie Kondo" our life. Organizing and minimizing clutter is a growing trend, and Marie Kondo is the tiny Japanese organizational guru, aka Tidying Consultant, who teaches families strategies to de-clutter their lives and "choose joy" using her trademarked KonMari method.
While Kondo's method focuses on tidying up your home, the purpose of her work is to help others find joy in their lives once they clear away the clutter. As busy families we can apply this principle to our routines, to eliminate clutter and streamline processes so we can find joy-- and peace-- in our daily lives. To bring joyful life balance for adults and success in school for kids, we can organize our daily routines. When we arrive at work feeling out of sorts due to a rough morning, the day already feels challenging. For children, this feeling is equally true and can have a huge impact on behavior and learning throughout the school day.
Kondo's method begins with committing yourself to tidying up. If you find your morning routine doesn't exactly "spark joy" and you haven't yet done so already, consider picking one or two organizational strategies that might work for your family and commit to trying them out. You don't have to change everything all at once to see positive change.
Endless resources are available on the web or in print to help you find and customize strategies for your family's needs. I will share a few things here that have worked for my family over the years.
School Clothes Cubbies: Pick all 5 days of clothes over the weekend and stack them by day in hanging cubbies to eliminate decision making --and arguments-- from your mornings.
Visual Checklists: Whether you use printed lists, a whiteboard, or another tool, always ensure your child has a role in marking their assigned tasks as done. Try this for their morning bathroom routine or for afterschool time.
Everything in Its Place: Creating a specific place for jackets, shoes, and backpacks for each child also reduces morning chaos. In the morning our kiddos can always find their items, and when they come home they know where to put them!
Plan Ahead: Try spending some weekend time creating pre-packed lunches and healthy snacks to get in front of needs you know your family will have. Planning ahead for your weeknight dinners helps to take one less daily decision off your plate too.
At the Academies, our teachers use routines and organizational tools to help teach our students independence and self-monitoring through the day. Introducing these strategies at home can help make your mornings run easier. Remember, change doesn't have to happen all at once, but one item a week or month can be added to your daily routine to reduce stress and help your family find joy.
