Students showcased their research to state legislators during the annual Research in the Capitol event yesterday. Research projects were specific to Iowa and covered topics such as the use of technology in beef production, lake restoration, wind energy, additive manufacturing, historic building conservation, and quality of life in small town Iowa.

"It is a very prestigious and competitive event," said Svitlana Zbarska, program coordinator for
undergraduate research at Iowa State. "We received 84 applications for 20 openings, and chose students based on research that impacts Iowa. The projects represented the breadth of Iowa State and spanned every college."

All legislators were invited, and students with hometowns in Iowa reached out to their respective senators and representatives directly. The event was well attended, with some students receiving tours of their legislators' offices.

Not only did students share their research with Iowa's policymakers, the event also served as a way for students to advance their presentation and networking skills. Additionally, students from the University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa participated, giving students a chance to learn about research findings beyond their own.

"Most people think faculty and graduate students are solely responsible for research on campus, but undergraduate students are actively engaged as well," said Zbarska. "Research in the Capitol enables students to serve as ambassadors to convey the depth and variety of research being done at Iowa State."

Several students who participated in yesterday's event have also been selected to present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Oklahoma this week. Nearly 4,000 students across the nation will attend, including 54 from Iowa State. Students will also have the opportunity to explore the next step in their education, as the conference is combined with one of the largest graduate school fairs in the country.

"Research is an important component of a well-rounded education," said Zbarska. "Our students gain valuable hands-on experiences that can be transferred to the real-world."

Hannah Fisher (agriculture & society), Matthew Lechowicz (architecture), and James Weatherly (community & regional planning) discuss their research on the quality of life in small town Iowa with Senator Rob Hogg.
