BLACKHAWK ALUMNI ANNOUNCE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Congratulations go out to Richard (Rocky) Araujo from Hinsdale Central High School, Luke Carter from Carl Sandburg High School and Brett Wiseman from Mount Carmel High School on being named the recipients of the 2019 Blackhawk Alumni Association Scholarship.

The Blackhawk Alumni Association (BHAA) distributes college scholarships annually to the three most deserving high school hockey players in Illinois. Awards are determined from a candidate's level of community service, volunteerism, good citizenship, academic performance as well as the hockey talent of the individual who receives an annual $7,000.00 scholarship over four years.

These players will be honored at the Blackhawk Alumni Scholarship Luncheon on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. All of us here in Illinois are proud of their accomplishments in the classroom, in the community and on the ice.

John Cerza - Officials' Category
John Cerza always enjoyed the thrill of his dad taking him to the "Madhouse on Madison", the old Chicago Stadium, and seeing Keith Magnuson be the first one up the stairs onto the ice. They had seats in the first balcony, second row, right on the Blackhawks' blue-line. John began skating early and by 10 he was playing for the Palatine Norsemen. At 12, John saw an advertisement about becoming a hockey official and the opportunity to make some spending money. Passing the requirements, he became an approved official for the Amateur Hockey Association of the United States in 1975. READ MORE>>
ASK THE OFFICIAL BY DAVE ZEDNIK
QUESTION: During the shootout, the player skated up to pick up the puck at center ice and missed it. He then circled back to center ice, picked up the puck, and scored. Or did he? Does it count if the player skates pass the puck initially and then circles back to pick up the puck at center ice? One could argue it made the goalie leave his crease prematurely, which he did. It seems to me that the official should have blown the shot dead, cited the goalie for leaving his crease early, and made the shooter shoot again. ANSWER>>

QUESTION: In lieu of a goalkeeper is the use of a "goalie board" allowed either within the playing rules or purely from a safety and liability perspective to address the shortage of goalies in a sanctioned league? ANSWER>>
