Dear Residents:
I know that many of us were impacted by last week's storm that left neighborhoods throughout town with downed trees and branches - and caused major power outages for several days.
We have asked PSEG to investigate their infrastructure throughout Cherry Hill to determine if repairs or upgrades are required to help minimize future outages. We've also been in contact with our state representatives in the Sixth District - Majority Leader Greenwald and Assemblywoman Lampitt - to see what information they can obtain for us with respect to utility upgrades that PSEG may be planning so that we do not continue to suffer widespread outages during the summer and winter storm seasons.
Throughout the duration of the storm, Township staff and I remained in contact with PSEG regarding the total number of outages in Cherry Hill and the anticipated restoration time. I want to encourage our residents that if you lose power to immediately report it to PSEG by calling them at 1-800-436-7734, text the word "OUT" to 4PSEG (47734), or visit their website.

Mayor and Council Recognize 9 Year Old Cherry Hill Student for Efforts to Help End Racism |

During the Council Meeting on Monday, Mayor Angulo and Township Council recognized Woodcrest Elementary School student Olivia Ghee with a proclamation for creating a project which helped raise funds to help end racism.
Growing up in a biracial family, Olivia was inspired to host her own Yard Art Show and Sale of local children’s artwork entitled “Through the Eyes of Children: What Does Black Lives Matter Mean to You?" With the help of family, flyers were distributed to neighbors and Olivia’s classmates to help spread the word throughout the community.
The project allowed children of all races, throughout the Cherry Hill community to come together and express how they felt about the topic through art. Participants were encouraged to submit art pieces answering the question in which the pieces were subsequently sold. All of the funds went to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. Olivia raised about $2,000 from all of the sales.
Olivia is a tremendously inspirational young woman, who serves as an example for her peers, and for young people everywhere, and Cherry Hill Township is proud to recognize and honor all that she has done.

Cherry Hill Restaurant Week ends Sunday, August 16 |

There are just a few more days to take advantage of Cherry Hill Restaurant Week! Restaurant Week features incredible deals at some of Cherry Hill's finest eateries.
Guests will enjoy specially selected, 3-course dinner menus for either $25, $35 or $40 per person. Several restaurants will also offer a 2-course lunch menu for $15 or $20. A reminder that at this time, Restaurant Week deals will be available for pick-up, take-out, and outdoor dining options.

Free Food Distribution for Those in Need |

Cherry Hill Township partnered with Touch New Jersey to bring free food to those in need throughout the community. The next distribution will take place at Cherry Hill High School East from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 20. Drive-up and walk-up options are available. All visitors must wear a mask and practice social distancing.
Our latest distribution was a huge success! Councilwoman Sangeeta Doshi along with her family, our resident volunteer Valerie Danzey, and Township employees handed out approximately 1,000 boxes and served hundreds of families with healthy fresh produce. Thanks again to Wegman’s for donating bottled water and snacks for the volunteers.

American Red Cross Blood Drive in Cherry Hill |

The need for blood is constant. Help save a life by donating at the upcoming Cherry Hill Community American Red Cross Blood Drive. The drive is on Monday, August 24 from 2 pm-7 pm at the Cherry Hill Community Center, 820 Mercer Street.

National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat |

Antoinette Chance has just joined the over 95 other Cherry Hill residents by registering her yard as a National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat. She has a zest for life that shines through even before you get to her door. As you approach her Woodcrest home, you are greeted with native flowering plants, birdhouses and a birdbath, all bursting with color and vibrancy. Antoinette has been honing her gardening skills for over 17 years, and it shows. From the front step, you can watch as Swallowtail butterflies gracefully wander by, sampling pollen here and there. Mantises slowly make their way from leaf to stalk in the densely planted garden, and a glimpse of several birds nests can be seen inside the birdhouses that are positioned lovingly throughout the yard.
She is part of a community effort, initiated by the Cherry Hill Environmental Board. When 200 more residents certify their yards, Cherry Hill will become a nationally recognized NWF Habitat Community, signifying a substantial collective effort to restore habitat for valuable pollinators, insects and birds.
The certification process is simple, and the qualifications are easily achievable. "Plant a seed, a flower, bush or tree. If it thrives, then you are a gardener," Antoinette says. In fact, just one plant, tree or shrub can provide food and shelter for many valuable species. Antoinette tries to have something blooming in her yard throughout the season."That keeps my garden filled with wildlife all year long," she says.
The online certification process can be as quick as a few minutes, or can be made into a learning experience for your family. Tips and other useful and fun information can be found at NWF.org/Garden-for-Wildlife.

10th Anniversary of the Cherry Hill Trails Program –
Highlighting the Barclay Farmstead Trails

The Cherry Hill Environmental Board is marking the 10th Anniversary of the Cherry Hill Trails Program. Each month, one of the 11 trail locations will be highlighted. This month it is the Barclay Farmstead Trails.
The Barclay Farmstead Trails are three interconnected loops, totaling approximately .75 miles in length. They are located next to a farmstead that was built in 1816, and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The trails run along the north branch of the Cooper River, and can sometimes be muddy in places. Raised footpaths help in some areas. Many bird species can be seen here due to the unique setting and different habitat types. Barclay Farmstead Trails have been designated as a National Recreation Trail by US Department of the Interior, and selected as the beginning location of the NJ Audubon Bird and Wildlife Trails in Southern New Jersey. While the trails here are relatively short and easy, it nevertheless offers a variety of habitat, including wetlands, riparian forest, and a large pond. See if you can see ducks, Green frogs or turtles in the pond.
As part of the 10th Anniversary, you can walk or bike trails at 11 locations and participate in the Cherry Hill Trails Challenge. A Challenge Passport is available on the Cherry Hill website and at the Recreation Department in Town Hall, when it reopens. Challenge requirements are noted on the back of the Passport as are the prizes available to those completing all requirements at three different levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold. Take the Challenge and enjoy all the trails, solitude and nature that the Cherry Hill Trails have to offer. Check out all the trails on our website.

Report Spotted Lanternfly Sightings |

Camden County health officials are asking for the public’s help identifying a new pest spotted in the area. A Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), an invasive insect that has spread throughout southeastern Pennsylvania & New Jersey threatening agriculture and our beautiful hardwood trees, has recently been seen in Camden County.
Please contact the County Entomologist at (856) 374-6042 if you see an SLF. The public’s assistance in identifying the early locations of this insect will be critical to stopping its spread.
Spotted lanternflies are not known to bite, sting, or attack people, pets or livestock, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Agricultures. It is not known whether they are poisonous when ingested by humans or animals. The pest is primarily a threat to agriculture including many fruits and crops.

The Cherry Hill Fire Department Smoke Alarm Program
If your home is in need of smoke alarms or if you are unsure if your alarms are working, please submit a request form or call the Fire Marshal's Office at (856) 429-7441.
A CHFD representative will arrange to visit your home in order to evaluate your existing alarms. If you do not have working smoke alarms on each level of your home, they will be installed at that time.

Hours and Guidelines
The Cherry Hill Public Library is open with limited hours: Monday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday nights we are open until 8 p.m. Contactless Pickup continues Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Contactless Pickup ends at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and is not available on Saturdays. To schedule Contactless Pickup call 856-667-0300 x2 (Reference) during Library open hours or email chplref@chplnj.org. Masks and social distancing are required in the building. Your mask must be worn the whole time you are in the building and it must be over your nose and under your mouth. Metered access includes time limits of 30 minutes for patrons inside the building including 30 minutes on computers. Maximum capacity is set at 50 patrons at a time. If you feel any COVID symptoms please stay home.
Returns
Books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and video games can all be returned now in the outdoor book drops at CHPL and at the Marlkress Rd location at the Post Office. Do NOT put in the following items: American Girl dolls, puzzles, Kindle Fires, mobile hot spots, or any non-traditional items (https://chplnj.org/nontraditional_lending) Those items can be returned at the library. Once materials are returned to CHPL, they are put in quarantine for 72 hours. AFTER quarantine items will be checked in and adjusted on your account. Books and materials will be backdated to the day you returned them. Fines will not accrue during the days items are quarantined in the building.
