 " This Just In..."

The poet said, "April is the cruelest month," but we disagree. March can really be a challenging viper! She teases with 57 degrees of warmth and sunshine and just when you are slipping on those summer shorts she comes back with sleet and a 14" snowfall.

 Of course, March does have her pleasures - this year Marti Gras (March 5th), St. Patrick's a day and night to raise a glass or three and thankfully - Daylight Savings begins on the 10th so there will be more sunshine in our lives.

 At least, we hope that is true for all of  you.

Quiz #1

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

If it's March - it's the start of the baseball season. So we thought we'd create a baseball quiz that YOU WON'T GET!!! (I mean you've been killing this quizzes the past few months, so we're getting tough.)  Answer this one here: " Name the only major-league team in which the players all ended up with the same averages they'd begun the game with ."  Specifically  - they played a regulation game - that counted - and all of their batting averages were exactly the same as they were the day before. The game was not cancelled or rain-out. Muhhhhhahahahaha......

Winners of the February quizzes included Pat L. and Steve G. who recognized Dubrovnik, Croatia as our beautiful city. Nick T. figured out the quiz in which the man who doesn't know he's using "it" - was a Coffin.

And the winner of our caption contest featuring the crashed flying saucer was John B. and his  caption was , "Dad's going to vaporize me when he sees this."

Baked Honey Sriracha Lime Salmon

Sweet and spicy, baked honey sriracha lime salmon in foil is tender and flaky and has the most incredible flavors. A healthy and easy 30-minute meal for salmon lovers.

PREP TIME 10 MINUTES                       COOK TIME 20 MINUTES
SERVINGS  4

Ingredients
  • 1 large salmon or 4/6 individual (4-6 ounce ) fillets
  • salt and pepper. to taste ( for me this about 1 teaspoon salt,1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup sirracha
  • 2 limes (one juiced, one for slicing)
  • 2 tablespoons sy sauce ( I used low sodium)
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon freshly chopped cilantro
INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Preheat over to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with foil, grease lightly, and lay salmon on top. Season salmon with salt and pepper to taste. Slice one lime thinly, and slice the slices under the edges of the salmon.

  2. In a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat, melt butter. Stir in honey, sriracha sauce, juice of one lime ( about 1 tablespoon), soy sauce, and garlic. Bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat nd cook for 3-4 minutes longer.

  3. Pour 2/3 of the sauce over the salmon ( reserve remaining sauce for later) and use a spoon or spatula to make sure he sauce covers all of the salmon ( you just don't want any dry spots).

  4. Fold the edges of the oil up around the salmon so the sauce doesn't spill out everywhere ( the foil doesn't need to completely cover the salmon).

  5. Bake for 15 minutes, then switch to broil and cook another 4-5 minutes until the very edges of the salmon begin to char slightly -watch carefully so it doesn't burn.

  6. Top salmon with reserved sauce and chopped cilantro and serve.
RECIPE NOTES
I prefer to use skinned salmon, but if you want to use skin-on, just be sure to place skin-side-down on the foil and then gently remove the salmon flesh from the skin when you serve.

THE MOVIE
 - A choice between two films that couldn't be more different. An all-star cast tears it up in David Mamet's riveting "Glengarry Glen Ross."

While out west, Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper and J.T. Walsh turn a mystery into a great little movie. Either way you will enjoy your dinner and a movie.

Thermostat Time

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News
If you have one of these...OMG!
It is time to switch. Definitely get rid of the old mercury thermostats. But, buyer beware...did you know that the new thermostats that are WiFi enabled - often do NOT work with older - and even some newer - heating and cooling equipment.

Check out this link  to our site for details on Thermostats. This March when you spring forward with your clock - take a minute and consider replacing that thermostat.

Nouns of Assemblage

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News
I saw a bunch of crows on the lawn yesterday.
More than a bunch. A mess of them. I mean, there were a whole lot of crows. A horde, a hover and muster, a parcel - in fact there was a Murder of Crows. So I wondered had there been that many cats or jellyfish what should I have called them?

According to the United States Geological Survey:

* A shrewdness of apes
* A wake of buzzards
* A clowder of cats
* An intrusion of cockroaches
* A bask of crocodiles
* A business of ferrets
* A cackle of hyenas
* A smack of jellyfish
* A troop of kangaroos
* A romp of otters
* A company of parrots
* A shiver of sharks
* A scurry of squirrels
* A murmuration of starlings
* A knot of toads
* A rafter of turkeys
* A pod of seals or whales

Now, please...use this in a sentence with us next time you call!

March Art

Art Deco Statue at the Hoover Dam
-- by Oskar Hansen
The building of Hoover Dam belongs to the sagas of the daring. The winged bronzes, which guard the flag, therefore, wear the look of eagles. To them also was given the vital upward thrust of an aspirational gesture; to symbolize the readiness for defense of our institutions and keeping of our spiritual eagles ever ready to be on the wing."
                               - Oskar Hansen.

The winged figures are 30 feet high. Their shells are 5/8-inch thick, and contain more than 4 tons of statuary bronze. The figures were formed from sand molds weighing 492 tons. The bronze that forms the shells was heated to 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, and poured into the molds in one continuous, molten stream.

The First GPS

Pity the motorists of a century ago. Automobiles in the 1900s were slow, stiff, and undependable. Gas stations were scarce. The roads, where they could be found, were in wretched shape. (In 1910, there were only 10 miles of paved highway in the U.S.)

As if this wasn't enough discouragement, there was the challenge of navigating. Road signs were rare and often incorrect. Yet a high-tech alternative appeared in 1909: a real-time, on-board directional guide called the Jones Live Map. It was invented by J. W. Jones.

The idea was revolutionary.  The Live Map was a small turntable device with a cable that attached to an automobile's odometer.  Before making their journeys, drivers would purchase paper discs with the route to their destination.

The driver would place his journey's disc to the Live Map's turntable so that the journey's starting point lined up with an arrow indicator on the glass cover. As the car began rolling, the turning odometer cable caused the map to rotate.
The arrow would point to the driver's changing position in the journey.

Each disc had up to 100 miles of travel details around its perimeter.  If the journey was longer than 100 miles, the driver would replace the first disc with a second, or third part.

Jones Manufacturing was offering over 500 routes by 1919. The routes span the entire country from New York to Los Angeles.

The next attempt to provide instantaneous driving directions didn't appear until 1994, when the Department of Defense launched its Global Positioning System, which could locate the signal from a GPS device through a network of 24 satellites. The system was authorized for civilian use in 1996. More about the Jones Live Map System can be found here:   https://www.futilitycloset.com/2019/01/01/the-jones-live-map/

Spring Poetry

Daniels Energy Special Customer Savings News

A pity it is evening, yet
I do love the water of this spring
seeing how clear it is, how clean;
rays of sunset gleam on it,
lighting up its ripples, making it
one with those who travel
the roads; I turn and face
the moon; sing it a song, then
listen to the sound of the wind
amongst the pines.

A Letter From E. B. White
Dear Jack:
The next grammar book I bring out I want to tell how to end a sentence with five prepositions. A father of a little boy goes upstairs after supper to read to his son, but he brings the wrong book. The boy says, 'What did you bring that book that I don't want to be read to out of up for?'
And how are YOU?
Yrs,
Andy
