Golden roses to kick off our second 50 years! (photo credit: Martha Furniss)
|
Last Saturday, February 23, 2019 marked the official 50th Anniversary of St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Reston! On February 23, 1969, the Rev. Embry Rucker, the parish's first rector, celebrated Holy Communion with 42 people in a storefront building at Lake Anne Village Center. On Sunday, February 24, we began our yearlong celebration with a special reflection on the past 50 years of innovative ministry and outreach to the community of Reston. There will be many more ways of giving thanks for the first fifty years and looking joyfully ahead to the next fifty years of this welcoming, diverse, and progressive community we know as St. Anne's. |

Please keep Baba's family and friends in your prayers at this time. Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the spirit of faith and courage, that they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love. All this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. God's peace, Mtr. Laura+

Adult Forum: How the Bible Came to Be
How did the Old and New Testaments become "the Scriptures" for Christians? What is the "canon" and why do we call it that? What were the factors that shaped the development of the Bible as "our book?" What was Jesus' view of Scripture? How was what got "put in" or "left out" of the Bible determined? By what criteria? These and other issues will be the focus of an 8-week adult forum led by Bruce Boston during Lent and beyond. The forums will be held on Sundays, March 10, 17, 24, 31; April 7, 28; and May 5, 12 in Room 6 between the morning services (approx. 9:05 - 9:50 a.m.). If you've ever wondered how the Bible came to be, we hope you will come and participate.
Questions? Please contact Bruce Boston.

Ministry of Reconciliation: Small Group Opportunity
The last year at St. Anne's has been a time of change and loss; challenging, renewing and strengthening the Body of Christ gathered at our church. Many parishioners have expressed an interest in small group conversations to continue the process of healing and reconciliation. In response to that request the church is providing a Lenten offering of small group healing and reconciliation meetings.
The groups will be led by parishioner Jennifer Tidd, an experienced healing group leader, and Clifton Poole, past chair of the church's Evangelism Committee.
The conversations will be confidential. If there is information that the group would like to share with the vestry, that information must be approved by the full group before sharing.
The groups will meet weekly from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Room 1 for four weeks (March 10, 17, 24, and 31) with an option to continue the conversations after the initial four weeks. There is no charge for participation in the group.
Questions about the healing and reconciliation conversations should be addressed to Jennifer or Clifton.
We give thanks to God "who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us." 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. Witness to Crisis in Tijuana
What's really happening at our southern border? Join us at St. Anne's for an eyewitness briefing on the reality of the immigrants living in dangerous and desperate conditions in Tijuana while awaiting entry to plead for asylum. Just Neighbors recently spent a week helping refugees in Tijuana to prepare for immigration interviews at the border. On Wednesday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m., a Just Neighbors attorney will share that experience in a presentation at St. Anne's and will discuss potential ways we can help. Due to the construction work at St Anne's, space is limited so please reserve your seat at https://tinyurl.com/SA-JN-2019-0313.

UPDATE on Renovations to Worship Space
In October 2018, the vestry unanimously approved the use of funds from the mortgage refinance approved by the parish in 2017 to renovate and upgrade our worship space. We've got exciting changes happening including fresh paint, new LED lighting, new flooring, window tinting, and pew recovering.
Paint is done. Windows are tinted. The lights are all in but we are working on some adjustments to get them just right. Coming soon: new flooring!
REMEMBER: we are holding the 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Sunday worship services in the Great Hall. Please observe the signage for guidance on getting around our building during this time.

Help St. Anne's When You Shop!
Does your porch ever look like this?
Your use of our website to view and search for products on Amazon has brought thousands of dollars of revenue sharing funds to St. Anne's at no additional cost to you! Some people tell us that they even buy things like coffee, dog food, or diapers.
You will also find links to the Book of Common Prayer, the Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version, and the current selections from our two book clubs. We hope to list other items soon, such as items needed for our food pantry and other items relevant to our church community and its ministries.
Rest assured that your shopping is your business and private. No one in the church can track your orders or searches. But also know that we are incredibly grateful for the extra time and effort you make simply by starting your Amazon search here. We are grateful for every gift!

Vestry Corner
The
vestry met on Sunday, February 24, 2019 in the Library. Some of the highlights:
Eternal God, grant to us this day and every day such readiness and delight in following Christ, that whether our lives are short or long we shall have lived abundantly. Amen
(part of our vestry meeting opening prayer from the New Zealand Prayer Book)
- We welcomed new vestry members Eve Angerosa, Verlaine Jones, Sarah Murphy, Judy Skirbunt, and Mark Tokarski. Susanne Walsh determined that she is unable to make the commitment to vestry this year. The vestry elected James Brooks, who is willing to serve. Judy Skirbunt offered to fill the existing one-year term. Thus our new members serving 3-year terms are Eve, James, Verlaine, and Sarah.
- Chris Cameron was elected Senior Warden and Dorry Kee was elected Junior Warden. In this transitional period while we await the arrival of an interim rector, they will continue working closely with Mother Laura, Father Vance, the vestry, and the staff to coordinate and lead the day to day work of the church.
- Jane Smith was elected and has agreed to serve as register for the 29th year!
- Jim Vollman was elected and has agreed to serve another year as treasurer.
- Emily Besuden, Angie Gray, and Rich Geissler were elected to serve as Delegates. Chris Cameron, Evan Gray, and Honey Dennis were elected as alternates.
- Chris Cameron was elected to serve a three year term as Trustee, joining Jim Jones and Dorry Kee.
- Jim Vollman indicated in his treasurer's report that we are about $75K short of the $750K in pledges that we need to meet our low-end budget. Clifton Poole is spearheading the campaign to close that gap.
- We will be forming ministry teams (Stewardship, Worship, Evangelism, Education, Pastoral, & Service/Outreach). We are eager to have other lay leaders join our teams so expect to hear from us!
- We approved a $9,000 maintenance contract out of operating funds for our new HVAC system to keep our investment in good operating condition.
- We approved $15,000 from capital funds available from the refinance of our building to improve security and building access control in fulfillment of our lease requirements with Common Ground Child Care.
- We approved $15,000 from capital funds available from the refinance of our building for supplemental expenses related to the worship space renovations including safety enhancements to the lights, window tinting, and sacristy cabinets.
- The vestry spent the last part of our meeting on the ministries of reconciliation and transition with our church consultant, Karen Salter. We will continue our work with her at a retreat on March 16.
