Masks For Music Ministry Fundraiser
We are selling homemade cloth masks to raise funds to purchase outdoor sound equipment to help improve our sound quality during worship services.

Need a new mask during this pandemic time? Try one of ours, carefully made by our Faith Knotters! Each mask has an elastic band so there are no strings to tie. There are sizes for adults and children with some of your favorite colors and patterns - see examples below! Purchase one for everyone in your family to help support a good cause. Please click here to fill out the order form.

Masks will be available for pick up during outdoor worship on August 30 and Rally Sunday, September 13.  The cost of each mask is $5.00. For more information about this fundraiser please contact Pastor Reggie. Thank you for your support.

Growing in Faith Together P.S.
To continue growing in faith together, here are some steps to listen to God speaking to you through the gospel or any text in the Bible. You can do this by yourself or with other people.

  • Open your Bible or go to www.biblegateway.com to find a portion of scripture to read and reflect on. It can be just one verse, or a complete scene.
  • Open the eyes and ears of your heart and mind as you begin reading slowly, out loud.
  • Pause and allow a time of silence after you have finished reading.
  • Read the passage a second time.

Then move into a time of reflection.

  • What do you notice? (What words or images resonate with you? What do you experience in your body as you read it?)
  • What questions does the text bring up for you?
  • Share that with Jesus or another person, and listen in silence.
  • If you are with another person, listen to what the other person noticed and wondered about in that reading. Pause and allow a time of silence.
  • What connections to your life do you notice in what you noticed in the text?
  • What idea experiment can you play with in your imagination or put in action in life? (This is where what we have been doing in our prayer and practice together has emerged.)

You can do this. I believe God will meet you there and continue to bless you. Play on dear friends in Christ! It has been a gift to be growing in faith together!

Connect
Do you know a 4th or 5th grader?
It is time to register for Connect! Connect is a pre-confirmation class for 4th and 5th graders. Each week we explore scripture stories and make connections to our daily life around themes that relate to kid’s experiences. We are planning for online learning and onsite in-person learning when possible.

This year’s lessons focus on the Old Testament and we begin with Genesis! We will also explore ways to incorporate service learning and large group social elements with our on line learning and will gather in person when possible, anticipating this will be a year of hybrid learning.

Connect Bibles have been ordered for children new to this program, so they will have their own text to use for Connect and Confirmation studies. Sign up here. Please email Pastor Reggie for more details.

Seeking Guides for Connect!

Connect meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-6:45 p.m. Guides will help facilitate small group discussion by sharing highs and lows, prayer, reading scripture together and discussing how it connects to your life, and end class with a closing prayer and blessing. Guides will facilitate groups online and onsite when possible.  Please call or email Pastor Reggie if you are interested in being a Guide.
SPARK News
It is time to register for SPARK! Please contact Pastor Laura for more information.

SPARK lesson: “Many Members, Many Gifts”

As part of the one body in Christ, each member has gifts to share for the health and strength of the community. Paul is insistent about the need for our religious confessions of faith (what we believe) to take on flesh in the way we live. Sometimes kids need help connecting what they say they value and care about with what they choose to do. This passage can help them see their own unique giftedness necessary to the strength of the community.
Nursery Nuggets
Hi Nursery Buddies and Parents!

I hope you enjoyed playing some games to help remember some of God’s word. If you didn’t get it down fully, that’s okay because we have every day to grow closer to God by reading the Bible whenever we want. Let’s try another one:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Proverbs 3:5

This is a great scripture to remember, especially in moments where we feel unsure or worried. When we remember to trust in the Lord with all our heart and might we can have such power from God. Such strength to face anything, show kindness to anyone, and wisdom to solve any problem. And you can use the games you already know to practice this scripture!

Have Fun!

Music Notes
One of the blessings of working with excellent people is another’s perspective. Gretchen Pierskalla made this clear to me recently bringing my attention to Not Lifting Our Voices; The blessing of abstaining from communal song, an article in the July 29 Christian Century magazine, by L. Roger Owens of the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. Big picture, he reminds us of Jesus’s call to put the needs of others, i.e. not spreading the virus, before our own. As Paul writes in Philippians, “look not to your own interests but to the interests of others.”

He makes three good points:
  1. When he teaches Dietrich Bonhoeffer, students often question Bonhoeffer’s admonition for seminarians to only sing in unison. Rogers suggested that in Nazi controlled Germany, unison singing may have expressed a necessary solidarity. By studying theology they were risking their lives.
  2. Of his own United Methodist/John Wesley tradition, Owens quotes Wesley saying, if singing “is a cross to you, take it up, and you will find it a blessing.” Conversely then if not singing is a cross, perhaps you can find that discipline a blessing, also.
  3. Finally, he quotes Psalm 137, where the people of God wonder how they can sing the God’s song in a foreign land. “Christians today might make that ancient lament their own.”

Many thanks to Gretchen for bringing this perspective to me. I will miss her on staff terribly, but am so pleased to see her continue the path to ordination. I look forward to the day that we can all sing together again, as Wesley says “lustily,” “spiritually,” and with an “eye to God.” Until then I’ll keep the discipline of not singing together, thankful for Gretchen and her friendship, and knowing that when we can sing together again, it will be a true resurrection.
