Harnessing the Power of Interns

One of New Hampshire Public Health Association's (NHPHA) strategic priorities is to strengthen the public health workforce through membership engagement and professional development. While you may be familiar with our educational offerings, you may not know that we have an intern program to help connect public health students to real-world public health placements. That program takes several forms.
Intern Stipends
 Each year we are allocated a number of intern stipends from the New England Public Health Training Center at Boston University that we award to public health or other health student majors who meet the internship requirements. This year three interns received stipends to tackle a variety of projects.

Comings and Goings
It is with great pleasure that we welcome
Jess Barnett as the new
Program Assistant at NHPHA. This position is the glue that holds the association together, and we are confident Jess's talents and experience will serve us all well. Jess's career encompasses 15 years of copyediting, editing, and publishing experience in a variety of fields, including scientific, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and financial. She is also a self-taught artist and has been painting since 2004. Additionally, she serves as a consultant as a copyeditor at DEPLOY/US, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization committed to pragmatic climate and energy solutions and sustainability Jess graduated from Boston University in 2001 with a BA in Journalism. Please join me in giving Jess a warm welcome!

After 18 months at the helm, Rebecca Sky is passing the Board President baton to Incoming President Marcella Bobinsky. Rebecca logged countless hours in this role and throughout her tenure demonstrated her intellect, passion for public health, and keen understanding of the policy climate in the state. Rebecca's approach to every task she undertakes is comprehensive and thoughtful. We thank her for all this and more and are glad that she will be close by as Immediate Past President to continue to share her expertise with us. Thank you, Rebecca!

- All abstracts are accepted.
- Students will be judged separately, by undergraduate and graduate level.
- Prizes and awards are typically awarded during the Annual Meeting itself.
- Students will receive the rubrics ahead of time.
- Students must register for the Annual Meeting separately as part of the general registration. We have not released the registration yet, but we will announce it when we do.
Silent Auction: NHPHA Needs Donations
How can you help?
This year the NHPHA is hosting its first ever Annual Silent Auction. This auction will be conducted online leading up to the event, and then the culmination of the auction will be at the Annual Meeting, finishing as a live silent auction. During the event, we host public health students in a pre-session, student poster presentations, and the primary Annual Meeting. Last year, over 170 people attended.
What do we need?
We are looking for item donations for this event. The auction will benefit NHPHA and subsequently the greater NH public health community. We attract members from all over the state, and your business name and item will be prominently displayed electronically and at the event. The item can be an experience, a basket, goods, services, etc.
Advertising
We will be advertising the event and silent auction items leading up to the meeting on Facebook and through the online platform, which is great exposure! The live event will mean further exposure, especially given the range of location of our members. This auction will benefit not only NHPHA, but also the greater public health community, and will serve as a great marketing opportunity for each business that donates.

March Is Colon Cancer Awareness Month
Did you know that colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States? And that one in five people diagnosed will be under the age of 55? How about that it is the most treatable form of cancer when diagnosed early?
Since 2014, the NH Public Health Association has partnered with the national Colon Cancer Coalition and Gould Hill Farm to host the
Get Your Rear in Gear Trail 5K, raising close to $150,000 from fees, sponsors, and donations.

National Public Health Week Begins April 1 
National Public Health Week (NPHW) is quickly approaching!
Will you be joining the week with action for health? This national event, themed this year as
"
Creating the Healthiest Nation: For science. For action. For health,"
gives us an opportunity to look at our community and see where we can make an impact for healthier living. Each day of National Public Health Week has a theme. These areas are critical to our future success in creating the healthiest nation, and everyone can do their part to help.
National Public Health Week 2019 begins April 1. Please join us for a week filled with celebrating the power of prevention, sharing strategies for successful partnerships, and working toward wellness.

NHPHA Welcomes New Chair of Policy Committee
 Beginning in March,
Annika (Anni) Stanley-Smith, BS, CPS, will be taking over as
chair of the NHPHA Policy Committee. Anni is a graduate of Southern New Hampshire University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology. She works as the Substance Misuse Prevention Coordinator for the Capital Area Public Health Network, an initiative of Granite United Way. She has been an employee of Granite United Way since 2011, where she started as a volunteer who was attracted to by mission and the culture of collaboration in the organization.
Anni has been an advocate and a policy enthusiast for the past five years of her work in the prevention field. She is a recipient of the Dr. Tom Fox Scholarship from New Futures. She has experience in volunteer management, event planning, networking, public speaking, and strategic planning. Anni received her Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) credential in May 2016. She volunteers on the Board of the Dismas Home of New Hampshire, creating a safe, supportive home for formerly incarcerated women to receive treatment and recovery services, and serves on the Steering Committee of the Concord Young Professionals Network. In her free time, and when the weather cooperates, Anni enjoys spending time outdoors camping, hiking, and trying new things like trapezing. In the spring she's looking forward to raising chickens! The committee has purchased NHPHA pins as a way to say thank you to our members when they renew. We hope you will wear your pins with pride at NHPHA and other public health events.
