A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

This evening I, and a number of JCC congregants met at Southern Ocean Medical Center to hand out Hanukkah bags to patients. We sang songs, told the Hanukkah story and had fun with adults, children, nurses, and staff. What a Mitzvah.

We then attended the Medical Center's annual Christmas Tree and Menorah lighting ceremony. Other clergy, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, and several charitable organizations joined us. It was cold outside, but there was warmth in the air as we all joined together to sing and watch the symbols of our faiths be lit and sanctified.

It was a holy moment.

More than almost any other Holiday, Hanukkah has a lot to offer. It gave us the Menorah, Latkes, Sufganiyot (jelly donuts), and the chocolate gelt. It provided the dreidel, the songs, the presents, and the ability to spend time with family. It bequeathed to us the Maccabees military victory, and the miracle of the oil. It is a holiday of abundance.

Take the time to Ponder the lights, eat the food, play the games, sing the songs, buy the presents, and recall the story. Never forget the miracle of the oil. Always remember the wonder of the military victory.

There is so much to be thankful for and so many reasons to praise the Holy One.
Don't take the Festival of Lights lightly.

Shabbat Shalom and Chag Hanukkah Sameach - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

KOL HAKAVOD CAMPAIGN

Please consider being a part of this campaign to supplement the clergy needs of our congregation.   This is a separate, voluntary commitment  and is additional to our low annual dues obligation. HERE IS THE LINK TO BRING UP THE DONATION FORM KOL HAKAVOD

THE WEEK THAT WAS....

Thursday JCC members spent the afternoon and evening at Southern Ocean County Medical Center. In the afternoon, a group went around the hospital's TCU unit bringing gelt, cookies and dreydels to patients and nurses as well as telling the Hanukkah story and singing Hanukkah songs.

Getting ready to visit patients with Hanukkah goodie bags are Rudy Valentine, Rabbi Jay, hospital volunteers Hal Polon, Hannah Linn and Julianne Chan and Rose Valentine

In the evening, we joined several local organizations at the Lights of Life Holiday Celebration.  Rabbi Jay spoke, we sang a Hanukkah song and lit our menorah.  Latkes and cookies were served in the cafe thanks to the folks at the hospital.
ANNUAL CHRISTMAS VISIT TO THE HOSPITAL

Join the JCC as we bring good cheer and poinsettias on Christmas Day to patients at Southern Ocean County Medical Center in Manahawkin.  We will meet in the lobby at 10:30 AM.  This project takes just about an hour.  Please let the office know if you will be able to volunteer that day.

AFTERNOON MOVIE AT THE JCC
SUNDAY DECEMBER 16TH

HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, KID

This Hollywood studio classic celebrated its 75th year in 2017. The movie is full of Jewish-refugee actors, as the actual Casablanca was full of refugee Jews, stuck in "unoccupied France" after the fall of Paris and trying to escape to the New World via Portugal.
COMMUNITY EVENTS

Mah jongg A December Mah jonng Luncheon is planned on Tuesday, December 18 at 11:30 AM at Brazzi's on Route 72. Again, here's the details:

DATE: Monday - December 17, 2018
TIME: 11:30 a.m.
PLACE: Brazzi Wood Fired Trattoria
601 Route 72 (heading East in the Harborside Plaza)

DETAILS:
We will order off the menu and get separate checks.

As usual, I will collect an extra $1.00 from each of you as an extra tip for the waitresses. Also note that the way Brazzi's set up for us is that they'll reserve the tables of four for us to play, and then we'll all sit together to have lunch about an hour in to our playing. It's really very pleasant and they are very accommodating.

Please RSVP only if you are attending. It is important that you let me know you are attending so I can give Brazzi's a headcount. As always, I can be reached by a reply to this email or my phone number is 212-249-6292.
