CHIA Student Scholarships & Grants - March 1 Deadline
|
|
The CHIA Awards and Scholarship Fund offers CHIA Student and Active members, and California’s CAHIIM-accredited programs a variety of scholarships, awards, and grants. The purpose of these programs is to promote the importance of HIM professional credentials, strengthen the HIM profession, promote the value of AHIMA and CHIA membership, identify and engage future leaders, and support HIM-related research.
Student Scholarships
- Deadline March 1
Awards students seeking to become a HIM professional and currently enrolled in a CAHIIM-accredited HIT/HIM program; and members seeking to advance their HIM careers by pursuing a specialty HIM credential or postgraduate degree in a HIM-related field.
Eligibility Criteria:
- CHIA Student or Active member,
- Enrolled in CAHIIM-accredited HIA, HIT or HIM Master’s Degree program and completed a minimum 50% of program curriculum, and
- Must not have received a Student Scholarship at any time previously.
HIIM Program Grants
- Deadline March 1
Awarded to Health Information, Health Informatics, and Health Information Technology programs to support improvements in teaching and learning to help meet special needs of these programs in California.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Any CAHIIM-accredited program within the state of California is eligible.

CEE Approves 2018 AHIMA HIM Curricula Competencies

In response to the HIM Reimagined (HIMR) initiative to build a framework for health information management (HIM) transformation and position professionals for the future, the Council for Excellence in Education (CEE) Curricula Workgroup developed the 2018 AHIMA Health Information Management Curricula Competencies. The new curricula competencies address HIMR recommendation #3: "Increase the opportunities for specialization across all levels of the HIM academic spectrum through curricula revision, while retaining a broad foundation in HIM and analytics."
The draft competencies were released in June 2018 with an open comment period that closed on September 14. The CEE Curricula Workgroup analyzed the feedback to revise and finalize the draft competencies. The CEE approved the final 2018 HIM Curricula Competencies in December and they were shared with CAHIIM and CCHIIM to pursue next steps under the recommendation.

ONC’s Proposed Rule will Connect People to their Care

Today, I am pleased to announce the release of ONC’s proposed rule to implement provisions in Title IV of the 21st Century Cures Act (Cures Act). We also released a series of educational resources that focus on areas of the rule—including patient access, information blocking, the new conditions of certification, and the role application programming interfaces (API) will play in the new health information technology (health IT) landscape created by the Cures Act. Over the next few weeks, we will hold several public webinars that share more about the proposed rule.
Let’s talk a bit about that API world and what it means for the people of this nation. The American public is awash in software apps. During my subway commute, at least half of my fellow riders are engrossed in their smartphones. I’m guessing only a few of them have apps that allow them to engage in their healthcare. What will it take to get patient-focused apps that help us manage health and care on our smartphones?

Senators Introduce Bipartisan Bill to Create Public-Private Cyberworkforce Exchange

Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and John Thune (R-S.D.) introduced the “Cyber Security Exchange Act” on Monday, aimed at bringing more cybersecurity experts to the federal workforce, according to The Hill. The bipartisan legislation would create an exchange program that would allow cybersecurity experts at private firms or in academic roles to work for federal agencies for up to two years, while federal workers in turn would have the opportunity to work in the private sector as a way to brush up on the latest in cybersecurity practices.
While the recent government shutdown further spread cybersecurity resources thin, the struggle to address the cybersecurity worker shortage in the federal government is not new. With this bill, Klobuchar and Thune seek to address the need for an improved approach to cybersecurity at the federal level. “Our country’s cybersecurity should be a top priority, but currently, our government needs additional cyber security experts to ensure we are not vulnerable to attacks from adversaries and cybercriminals,” Klobuchar said in a statement.

Attorney General Becerra to Hold Public Forums on California Consumer Privacy Act as Part of Rulemaking Process

On June 28, 2018, Governor Brown signed Assembly Bill 375, now known as the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018. The CCPA grants consumers new rights with respect to the collection of their personal information: a consumer can request that a business disclose what information it collects about the consumer, where it collected the information from, and with whom it has shared the information. Consumers may also request that their personal information be deleted and can opt-out of the sale of their personal information. Businesses are prohibited from discriminating against consumers for exercising their rights under the CCPA.
Participate in Public Forums
The California Attorney General’s Office will hold public forums as part of the CCPA rulemaking process. All members of the public are invited to participate and can RSVP to any of the forums on the RSVP form. Interested persons can also submit comments via email or by mail to the California Department of Justice, ATTN: Privacy Regulations Coordinator, 300 S. Spring St., Los Angeles, CA 90013. Please note that any information provided is subject to the Public Records Act.
