KBA BOARD POSTPONES 2020 CONFERENCE, MOVES FORWARD WITH VIRTUAL AWARDS
KBA's Board of Directors voted unanimously on Wednesday to postpone the 2020 in-person annual conference, citing health precautions and state mandated restrictions on large crowd gatherings. "While we certainly hate to postpone this years event, we have no choice but to make a recommendation that is in the best interest of the health and safety of our attendees", Mark Buckles, Chairman-Elect.

We are pleased to announce that the 2021 KBA annual conference will also be held in Owensboro, October 10-12, 2021. Mark your calendar!
Following the decision to postpone the annual conference, the Board voted to accept the recommendation from the Awards Committee, to move forward with a virtual Excellence In Broadcasting Awards event for 2020.

The event will be held on Monday, October 12th at 2:00 pm eastern. The Committee encourages all member stations to plan a watch party with their staff (socially distant of course) to view the streamed event.

UPDATE ON KHSAA VIDEO STREAMING PROPOSAL FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS
Last week we told you about a partnership between the KHSAA and NFHS Network that potentially threatens the long-standing relationship between local broadcast stations and their local school districts, by providing video equipment to stream and monetize local games.

KBA has since obtained a portion of the agreement between the Alabama Athletic Association and the aforementioned NFHS Network. The language appears to give control of the schools regular season broadcast rights to the state athletic association.
“Radio broadcast, telecast, cablecast and internet broadcast rights for regular season contests in all sports are held by the home/host school. Media outlets wishing to broadcast, telecast, cablecast or webcast a regular season contest should contact the principal of the home/host school to secure rights and make arrangements.  AHSAA reserves the right to prohibit the broadcast of a regular season game (whether live or taped delay), in the event the broadcast interferes with a scheduled AHSAA event, regardless of whether the event is televised, or is considered, at the sole discretion of AHSAA, to be in poor taste or does not properly reflect the values of AHSAA.  It will be at AHSAA’s sole discretion to determine whether a regular season game interferes with an AHSAA event. AHSAA may prohibit the broadcast of a regular season game if AHSAA believes, in its sole discretion, that it will negatively affect the attendance or viewership of an AHSAA event, regardless of whether both events are occurring at the same time, or take place on different dates.  Additionally, in the event a member school enters into a contract with a television/cable/radio/internet partner or network to televise any regular season games, the member school and the media outlet must insert the following in the contract:“[insert media outlet] hereby acknowledges that [insert member school] must abide by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (“AHSAA”) Media Policies and Procedures, and AHSAA has the right to prohibit the broadcast of a regular season game (whether live or taped delay), in the event the broadcast interferes with an AHSAA-sponsored event, regardless of whether the event is televised, or is considered, at the sole discretion of AHSAA, to be in poor taste or does not properly reflect the values of AHSAA.”
Assuming that the Kentucky agreement includes similar language, we are encouraging you to take action on a local level now. While the KBA will be diligently working numerous avenues to educate school administrators around the state, we suggest that you schedule a meeting with your superintendent and/or athletic director to educate them about the agreement and the incredible amount of support that your station provides to the school system outside of sports.

If you have any questions or need talking points for your local meeting, please email Chris at chris@kba.org.
