It's Roundtable Time
Thursday, April 5, Is Roundtable
Unit leaders don't forget to send someone from your unit to the roundtable meetings. It's a great time to meet other leaders, share best practices, and ask questions.
Roundtables are at 7:30, the first Thursday of every month from September through June, at the LDS Church, 220 N. San Pedro Road, San Rafael.
Boy Scout Roundtable
For the first 20 minutes, we will have the Camp Marin Sierra summer camp orientation for leaders. Be sure to send someone from your troop if you are attending this summer.

Cub Scout Camping
Day Camp is the highlight of a Cub Scout's year! However, boys and girls who are not currently in Cub Scouts are welcome attend. Day Camp is open to youth who will be entering the second through fifth grades in the fall of 2018.
- First Day Camp: June 25-29 (registration open through 6/14/18)
- Second Day Camp: July 9-13 (registration open through 6/29/18)
- Third Day Camp: July 23-27 (registration open through 7/12/18)
Bus service is available from many parts of Marin if desired.
Cost for Day Camp is $265.00, with a $20 discount for currently registered Cub Scouts. Bus service is $50 per camp.
Family Fiesta
Theme: Safety First
May 18-20, Camp Tamarancho
What is Family Fiesta? Family Fiesta is a family camping experience for Cub Scouts, Webelos, invited friends, and their families. This camp will introduce the Cub Scouts and their family to some of the activities that can be experienced in our summer day camp programs. Just like at camp, events
and activities are run by Boy Scout troops and Venturing crews. The Cub Scouts will get an opportunity to meet summer day camp staff and older Scouts, and as a bonus, they get an idea of all the fun and exciting things that await them when they become Boy Scouts or Venturers.
The theme and activities around "Safety First" will provide an opportunity for Scouts, siblings, and parents to learn and practice Scout skills, crafts, and values. Marin Council troops and crews will lead campers in events ranging from field sports, climbing, nature hikes, shooting sports, and safety exploration. The day will close with a campfire program. The cost is $15 per person age 5 and older. This price does not include food, which varies by meal. Meal ticket sign-up deadline is May 11.

Merit Badge Counselor Training--2 Opportunities
There will be a merit badge counselor training class at Troop 200, Novato, on Tuesday, May 1, 7:30 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church of Novato, 710 Wilson Ave. No pre-signup necessary.

Wilderness First Aid Training
Save the date for a Wilderness 1st Aid class at Tamarancho on June 9-10. It will cost $130 per person. If people want to add CPR (and they should), it is another $35 for a
total of $165 combined. This training (WFA & CPR) are required to be obtained by 2 participants to trek Philmont, so if you are planning to go there in the next two years, now is the time to get the training cheap! This class costs more than $200 normally.
Minimum class size is 14 participants, 24 is the maximum. Scouts can be 14 or older, but ideally 16 and older is best. The class is two days at Bode Lodge and the surrounding outdoors doing real life scenarios of 1st aid emergencies that can occur in the wild!

Once class packets are mailed, there is no refund. However, you can transfer your space and packet to another person.
Wood Badge 2018 - Great Year to attend!
Wood Badge advanced adult training program of BSA, which teaches contemporary leadership and team development skills right here at Camp Tamarancho! August 24-26 and September 14-16.
New Youth Protection Training
There is a new Youth Protection Training that replaces the current version. All registered members must complete the New YPT by October 2018. You will recognize the new version because there are four (4) distinct modules to take. There are no longer different versions for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, or Exploring. Even if...Yes, even if you just took the earlier version or are current within the past two (2) years, everyone will need to pass the new version. This new training can be accessed on my.scouting.org.

Marin Council Pinewood Derby Race
Every year, the Marin Council has a council pinewood derby race at the Marin County Fair. This popular and fun race is for all the winners of pack races to run off against other packs; it is the highlight of the year for many Cub Scouts.
The race is run by volunteers from packs and even troops and crews who set up, run, clean up after the race, and conduct two check-in days in June for packs to register their cars. We also need a pack to supply a track, software, and operators.
This race cannot happen without people to run it.

Cars that are not in the race can be part of the Marin County Fair pinewood derby car exhibition. Forms are available on our web site by
clicking this link. We'd like to get as many cars from Cub Scouts at the Fair as possible because this exhibition is generously sponsored by Vanguard Automotive in San Rafael.

Marin Sierra Camp Opening Work Party
Don't miss this opportunity to invest and work at your camp. Every year on Memorial Day weekend in May, teams of people work hard to get camp ready for the summer. Summer camp cannot operate until we change the camp from winter use to summer use. We will feed and house you for the weekend! Please come and help. More to come in the next couple of months. Time to Think about Fishin'!
Yes! The Fishing Derby is on! Joe Cilia and his crew are ready to host this popular activity again. Thanks goes to them for pitching in year after year.
The date is Saturday, May 12, 9:00-Noon, at the Marin Rod & Gun Club in Point Richmond. Thanks again to the club for donating the use of their facility!
There will be a fishing seminar from 8:00-9:00 to learn how to set up tackle. After the derby, there will be a BBQ lunch and prizes. The event is low cost, and you can register online by

Marin Council Shooting Sports
Shooting Events that Occurred in March
March 17 - Piedmont Troop 4 spent the day shooting .22 rifles. Though it rained and hailed, the range's new roof allowed them to still shoot as much as they wanted!
March 24 - The rain clouds subsided and over 61 Cub Scouts and parents spent a sunny day shooting both BB guns and archery during the annual Spring Bunny Shoot. Plinking the soda cans seemed to be the biggest hit!
Upcoming April Shooting Events
April 21 - San Francisco Troop 3 will be shooting .22 rifles and also throwing tomahawks.
Range Staff Training Opportunities
Since only 1 participant signed up for archery rangemaster training on 3/10, it had to be canceled. No training is currently scheduled, but if anyone is willing to attend training for rangemaster in archery, BB, tomahawk, or slingshot, contact
Keith Angerman, and he will schedule a convenient date for you. Please consider this training so we can continue to offer these very popular shooting events.

Talako Dispatch Notes, April 2018
Klondike 2018: Talako hosted 4 patrols at Marin Sierra for an epic winter Yeti Escape themed weekend. Winning patrols from Troop 59 and Berkeley's Troop 24 made for an eventful and fun competition.

OA Election Season! Please reach out to us immediately to arrange for a troop election before our spring ordeal. Deadline April 16! The spring induction into Scouting's Honor Society will be held April 20-22 at Camp Tamarancho.

Construction Zone Ahead!!!!
There's always lots going on at Marin Council camps, but this year we have some big constriction projects that are sure to please.
In the coming weeks, the Iron Springs Road project will be coming to a close with the completion of a new retaining wall just before the entrance to camp. This project began in the middle of 2017 and has included repairing and resurfacing the entire road as well as constructing a major retaining wall to repair slide damage from last year's winter storms.
When this project is completed over $135,000 will have been spent on improving access to Iron Springs Road. We'd like to thank the following donors who collectively contributed $49,750 to this project: the Massen Family, the Pritchard Family, Chris Laroche, Chris Carvalho, Tom Atwood, Thomas Terry, Eric McFarland, Mark Gyetvay, Matthew Carbone, Dean Moser, and Joann Sobel. Our camp users over the past months have said that the road to Tamarancho is in the best condition it has ever been.
Camp Marin Sierra will also benefit from a major improvement project this year when we build the first new shower building. During the summer we'll construct a new six-stall shower building that will be able to accommodate all our campers with safer (and more convenient) propane water heating. This shower building will be a $150,000 investment in our camp and is made possible from the generosity of Carl and Jeanie Blom. Plans are in place for a second shower building as well thanks to partial funding from the Massen Family along with Jay Cahill and Denny McNear.

Four fresh members headed up Saturday night for the fourth day of searching for Thomas Mulligan. These were Nichole Rehder, Joey Melberg, Woody Baker-Cohen, Scott Mullen, along with Michael St. John. We had excellent overnight accommodations in a large house we shared with a number of teams.
Sunday morning, we headed up to the resort to sort gear and attend a briefing. Sunday was the first day of sunny skies over the search area since Mulligan went missing four days earlier. Woody held over and worked as Plans Section Chief on a multi-agency management team. The scenario we worked was similar to Saturday's assignments, probing tree wells on the resort property for a downed skier. Avalanche conditions were dangerous outside the resort and the most likely scenario was that he was covered in snow on the resort. The powder was amazing, and even with fins on snow shoes, one sank about 2.5 ft with every step, making cross country travel very difficult. Nichole--who was on skies--broke off and searched the backside of the resort with an Alpine Ski team from NPS. Our team combined with a Contra Costa team and worked two assignments over a 6-hour time period. No further clues were located and ground search operations were suspended Sunday night. Further aerial searching was planned for Monday in the Mokelumne River drainage.
Our TV monitor, VHF base station radio, and other management supplies were utilized.

There are still slots available for the A's Scout Day for the 2018 season will on Saturday, April 21, 6:05 p.m., when the A's face off against the Boston Red Sox.

Earth Day at Hal Brown Park
Saturday, April 21, 2018, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Meet across from Marin General Hospital at Hal Brown Park at Creekside (at the pedestrian bridge near the bike path). From Hwy 101 in Larkspur, take the exit for Sir Francis Drake Blvd west 1.2 miles. Turn left onto Bon Air Rd and follow 0.3 miles. The park is on the right.
Join us to clean up litter from the Corte Madera Creek watershed and restore habitat at Hal Brown Park at Creekside. All skill levels are welcome, and no previous experience is necessary. All ages are welcome; anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a supervising adult. Dress in layers that you can get dirty, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water. Please bring gloves if you have them. Snacks will be provided. In the event of heavy rain and/or high winds call (415) 763-2977 to find out about event status. In the event of cancellation, program will be rescheduled.
Super Cool San Rafael Earth Day Event
For Packs, Troops, and Crews
Saturday, April 21, from 9:00 a.m. to Noon
Enjoy beautiful views of the bay while cleaning up litter along Starkweather Shoreline Path (SF Bay Trail near Target). Help us protect this area, which includes habitat that shelters a variety of birds and other wildlife.
We will provide gloves, litter sticks and bags. You should bring water in a reusable bottle, sunscreen, hat, layered clothing, and sturdy closed-toed shoes. Look for our table adjacent to the path entrance in the Target Parking Lot at 125 Shoreline Parkway, San Rafael.
