Over decades of public service, President George H.W. Bush's work to improve the lives of millions of Americans with disabilities may be one of his more overlooked accomplishments.

Shortage of Special Educators Adds to Classroom Pressures
[Source:  Education Week]

The number of special education teachers nationally has dropped by more than 17 percent over the past decade, a worrisome trend in a career path that has seen chronic shortages for years.
An analysis of federal data by the Education Week Research Center shows that while the number of special education teachers was dropping, the number of students with disabilities ages 6 to 21 declined by only about 1 percent over the same time period. And as a whole, the number of teachers in all fields has gone up slightly over the past decade, as has overall enrollment.

"Extremely discouraging."

That's how the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention describes the  latest data from the Centers for Disease Control. The CDC found in 2017, more than 47,000 people died by suicide in the United States. That's an additional 2,200 deaths over the previous year.
Suicide is still rare, but it is now the second leading cause of death for those ages 10 to 19. Mental health experts say that puts schools in a prime position to help troubled students and prevent suicides.

OT Corner: Teaching Shoe Tying - A Tool
[Source: Starfish Therapies]

We are lucky enough to have an OT back on staff and we have been loving the collaboration and idea generation!

So, in order to work on this skill she created a shoe tying board. It simplifies the task slightly so they can practice before applying it to their actual shoes.
