2018--A Year In Review

As another year comes to a close, The JFS Board of Advisors and professional staff wish you all a very Happy New Year.

2018 has been a fantastic year for JFS. With the support of our donors and volunteers, we have been able to serve more of our community in more ways than ever. Along with our ongoing services and programs, this year JFS served as the primary intake point for Jewish communities impacted by Hurricane Florence. While leading the case management charge in the aftermath of a natural disaster presents many challenges, the rewards of helping families and individuals recover and rebuild far outweigh the difficulties. We offer special thanks to those of you who donated to the local and national Federation Hurricane Florence Relief Funds. Your gifts are hard at work repairing homes and lives.

So far this year, your support has provided:

  • 1222 Therapy, Counseling, and Case Management services for 271 clients
  • $6,673 in Emergency Financial Assistance for rent, utilities, medical bills, and more
  • 3021 meals through the JFS Food Pantry and Mitzvah Meals
  • 1328 JFSGo rides for seniors to medical appointments, supermarkets, pharmacies, and Jewish community programs
  • Monthly Shabbat services at 12 senior living communities
  • Community volunteer opportunities, Good Deeds Day, the Senior Resource Fair, and more

Whether you are a family of one or many, with children or without, just starting out or approaching the end of your journey, JFS is here to help you navigate life’s challenges.

Covered court materials are here!

In the coming months, you will see crews hard at work constructing our state-of-the-art covered sports arena – this one has two full-sized basketball courts surrounded by various court games! Get ready to play basketball, tennis, volleyball and pickleball. The perimeter of the courts will have designated space for fun ball games like every kids’ favorite foursquare. Our brand new courts will have bleacher seating, bathrooms and climate control with cooling fans.  We can’t wait to get in the game!

Dear Dorit,
I am starting to get uncomfortable with the amount of clutter in my house. What are some gifts I can put on my Chanukah list that don't take up space?

Signed,
Mari Kandowitz

Dear Mari,
Good on you for taking steps to prevent the endless stream of tchotchkes that just sit around and collect dust. Here are some ideas for gifts showing that, as my neighbor's bumper sticker says, "the best things in life aren't things.

  • Experiences: Restaurant gift cards, theatre and concert subscriptions, museum memberships, animal encounters at the zoo or aquarium, lessons in a hobby you've always wanted to try.
  • Services: Gift certificates for hair styling, mani/pedis, massages, housecleaning.
  • Consumables: A bit of a cheat, since these will take up some shelf space before you use them. Tasty things like fancy chocolates, jams, cheeses. Or, you could go for useful things you need to replenish, like hand soaps or stationery.
  • Charity: Ask your friends and family to give the gift of camp scholarships to Camp JCC, or a lifeline of care through Raleigh-Cary Jewish Family Services.

If you still end up getting pesky gifts you don't want, feel free to send them my way!
We at the Federation wish a hearty Mazel Tov and kol ha'kavod to our Director of Finance, Sherrie Auriene , as she begins her retirement. We are so grateful for your 12 years of service to the Jewish community.
