The Arapahoe-Douglas-Elbert,  Aurora-Adams, Denver & Foothills County Medical Societies, in conjunction with the  Colorado Medical Society, are proud to team up and present metro area physicians an evening of dialogue on healthcare policy and provide an opportunity for conversations with elected officials in your area.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to offer your insight on extremely important issues to physicians this legislative session as we are certain that Colorado's trial attorneys will be pressing their case to expand the value and frequency of medical malpractice suits, breach the records and activities of peer review committees and impose other new creative causes of action under both the Medical Practice Act and medical liability statutes.

The evening of January 30th is your opportunity to have face to face dialogue with your elected officials that will be casting votes on these crucial issues. They need to hear from you!   In order to best prepare and meet our facility's planning requirements,  please  provide a reservation by Wed. , Jan.  23rd.  RSVP with member & guest names to:

Extortion scam targeting
DEA registrants

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reports that registrants are receiving telephone calls and emails by criminals identifying themselves as DEA employees or other law enforcement personnel. This issue first came to light last spring but is again on the rise.

The criminals have masked their telephone number on caller ID by showing the DEA Registration Support 800 number. Please be aware that a DEA employee would not contact a registrant and demand money or threaten to suspend a registrant's DEA registration.

If you are contacted by a person purporting to work for DEA and seeking money or threatening to suspend your DEA registration, submit the information through "Extortion Scam Online Reporting" posted on the DEA Diversion Control Division's website, www.DEADiversion.usdoj.gov.

"Know Your Legal Rights"
Physicians have rights under Colorado law when it comes to dealing with health insurance plans. Information on many of these laws is available to CMS members in the online database " Know Your Legal Rights." The Colorado statutes and regulations contained in this compendium apply to individuals whose coverage is through a fully insured health plan.

Did you know there is an easy way to determine whether or not the Colorado law applies for your patient's health insurance? C.R.S. 10-16-135 was enacted requiring standardization of health benefit plan ID cards. Part of that legislation requires that the designation "CO-DOI" must be placed on the card in a clear and conspicuous manner for any and all plans regulated in whole or in part by the Colorado Division of Insurance. (This is usually in the bottom left-hand corner of the ID card.)

This is just one example of what is available to ADEMS / CMS members in the  Know your Legal Rights database. Be sure to take advantage of this valuable member benefit.
