CCHS TO IMPLEMENT ImPACT TESTING

CDC (The Center for Disease Control) reports show that the amount of reported concussions has doubled in the last 10 years. The American Academy of Pediatrics has reported concussions have risen 200 percent among teens ages 14 to 19 in the last decade. (Source: Head Case: http://www.headcasecompany.com/concussion_info/stats_on_concussions_sports  )

We often associate concussions with athletics. However, numerous teens incur concussions from simple falls, bumps to the head, and other accidents. The faculty and staff at Camden Catholic work with students and families when a concussion has been diagnosed as the student returns to full health and activity.

One tool that can help in this process is the ImPACT test. ImPACT is an objective tool to assist in making sound return   to   activity   decisions   following   concussions. It is   a   computerized   test   that   measures memory, attention span, visual and verbal problem solving. ImPACT has two primary uses: before the onset of an activity, a baseline test is conducted to measure the student's performance baseline. In the event of an injury, a post-injury test is administered and compared to the baseline and/or normative data scores. This provides information that is used along with guidance from concussion-trained specialists to determine when a student may return to various academic and extra-curricular activity.

ImPACT will be implemented at Camden Catholic during 2018-2019. All athletes and students in grade 9 will take a baseline test during the month of September. Athletes will take the test during a regularly scheduled team meeting. Freshmen will take the ImPACT test during their health classes. Within the next two years, every CCHS student will have the opportunity to take an initial baseline ImPACT test. Any student currently treating for a concussion will not test until all symptoms have ceased. A parent of a freshman may opt out of ImPACT testing by contacting Eileen Wilkinson at eileen.wilkinson@camdencatholic.org. You may also contact Ms. Wilkinson with additional questions.
