New MoU Focuses on Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Fueling - Seeking Test Program Participants
|
On February 21, FCHEA members Air Liquide, Toyota, Hyundai and Nel Hydrogen joined Nikola Motors and Shell in signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to test state-of-the-art heavy duty (HD) hydrogen fueling hardware to assist in standardization and speed to market for fuel cell electric trucks.
The group will focus on testing pre-commercial 70MPa hydrogen heavy duty vehicle high flow (H70HF) fueling hardware for future Class 8 (40 Ton) trucks.
The industry group has created specifications for the fueling nozzle, vehicle receptacle, dispenser hose and breakaway device components and is requesting notification of suppliers’ intent to participate in a pre-commercial development and test program. The fueling hardware samples will undergo performance tests in accordance with the appropriate SAE/ISO/CSA industry standards along with additional aspects for this emerging market.

Nel to Deliver Hydrogen Station for Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Vehicles in the U.S.
|
On January 30, Nel ASA announced a contract for delivery of its H2Station solution for fueling of heavy-duty vehicles in the United States. According to Nel, the H2Station order has a total value of more than $6 million.
Nel states that the H2Station equipment will be deployed in the U.S. and will be capable of fueling both heavy-duty trucks, as well as light-duty vehicles. The customer has requested to remain unnamed, and further details will be released at a later point in time.

Hyundai Delivers First NEXO Fuel Cell Vehicle to Northern California Customer
|
On February 6, Hyundai Motor America announced its first NEXO fuel cell vehicle delivery in Northern California at Capitol Hyundai in San Jose. The NEXO was received by Dr. Steven Vo, an obstetrician/gynecologist.
NEXO was launched globally in 2018, and Hyundai began selling and leasing the SUV in California last month.

Plug Power Begins Production of Next Generation Class 1 Material Handling Equipment
|
On February 19, FCHEA member Plug Power announced that it has begun production of its next-generation class fuel cell system for industrial lift trucks. Plug Power claims that these systems provide increased efficiency and reliability; and come equipped with larger fuel tanks to increase run-time, as well as new communications capabilities for fleet management.
The first customer orders for this next-generation system are expected to ship in March 2019.

Air Products Unveils Pilot Project to Certify Renewable Hydrogen
|
On February 7,
gasworld reported that Transport for London and H2 Mobility Deutschland are set to receive some of Europe’s first Guarantees of Origin (GO) for renewable hydrogen generated by FCHEA member Air Products as part of a pilot project. The project is part of CertifHy, a European Union initiative launching the first European-wide GO scheme for low carbon and renewable hydrogen.
A GO labels the origin of a product and provides information to customers on the source of their products. It operates as a tracking system ensuring the quality of a product such as hydrogen. Transferable across the continent, GOs are intended to create an innovative, transparent hydrogen market.
The GOs are being sought for hydrogen produced at the Rotterdam chloralkaline electrolyser plants of Nouryon, which uses wind power as part of its energy mix. This renewable power is sourced from the recently completed Krammer and Bouwdokken windfarms in The Netherlands.
Once produced, the hydrogen is conditioned by Air Products before taking into its established pipeline in Rotterdam for commercial use.

myFC Receives Order for 2,000 JAQ Hybrid Chargers from South Africa
|
On February 18, FCHEA member myFC announced it had signed a non-exclusive distribution agreement for its fuel cell-based power bank JAQ Hybrid with Trenditrade 21, a franchisee in the Nashua Group, which provides office solutions to the Sub-Sahara region.
This agreement with Trenditrade 21 is myFC's first in Africa. The delivery of the 2,000 JAQ Hybrid chargers is planned to begin in Q2 2019.

Intelligent Energy UAV Fuel Cell Power Module Breaks New Record in Multi-Copter Endurance Flight; Intelligent Energy Signs Long-Term Partnership with Korean Hydrogen Fuel Company
|
On January 30, South Korean liquid hydrogen specialist MetaVista demonstrated a record breaking 10 hour and 50 minute multi-copter unmanned aerial vehicle test flight using a Fuel Cell Power Module (FCPM) from FCHEA member Intelligent Energy. The flight was conducted using Intelligent Energy's lightweight 650 watt (W) FCPM, and is believed to be the longest flight time of its kind, according to the company.

According to Intelligent Energy, the MetaVista liquid hydrogen system coupled with the 650W FCPM system provides a significant 1865 watt hours per kilogram energy density.
In addition, on February 11, Intelligent Energy announced a long-term partnership and collaboration with MetaVista. As part of the partnership agreement, the two companies will jointly work to officially recognize the longest fuel cell powered multi-rotor UAV flight time with the Guinness Book of World Records.

Doosan Showcases Hydrogen Fuel Cell UAV at Drone Show South Korea
|
At the recent January 2019 Drone Show Korea held in Busan, South Korea, FCHEA member Doosan Mobility Innovation unveiled a hydrogen fuel cell unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that can fly for eighty minutes without a payload.
According to Doosan, the hydrogen fuel cell UAV powerpack, first unveiled last year in Las Vegas, requires less than ten minutes of refueling and weighs only 6.3 kilograms. Existing lithium ion battery technology only allows lightweight UAVs to fly for twenty to thirty minutes, according to Doosan.

The Korea Herald
reports that Doosan plans to mass produce the hydrogen fuel cell UAVs.

FCHEA Members Awarded Funds from UK Government for Fuel Cell Vehicle and Hydrogen Refueling Infrastructure Deployment
|
On February 5, the United Kingdom's Department for Transport awarded approximately £14 million (~$18.1 million) for five fuel cell vehicle (FCV) and hydrogen refueling infrastructure projects across the country.
Among the winning project proposals is the "Hydrogen Mobility Expansion Project II," a consortium that includes FCHEA members Toyota and Hyundai. The project, set to receive £3.07 million (~ $3.98 million) in government funding, will see a new hydrogen refueling station built in the southern English town of Crawley. According to the government, the project will also include the deployment of 51 FCVs.
In addition, the "Towards commercial deployment of FCEV buses and hydrogen refueling" project partners includes BOC, part of FCHEA member The Linde Group. This project will receive £6.42 million (~$8.32 million) in public funds to deploy 25 fuel cell buses in Liverpool, 5 fuel cell buses in the Scottish city of Aberdeen, and a new hydrogen refueling station in St. Helens, a suburb of Liverpool.
In total, the five projects will build five hydrogen refueling stations, and deploy 106 FCVs - 73 cars and 33 buses.

Toyota Announces Partnership with Dutch Research Institute to Develop Hydrogen Electrolysis Device Using Water Vapor
|
On February 12, Toyota Motor Europe (TME) announced a partnership with the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER) entitled the Launchpad for Innovative Future Technology (LIFT). The partnership aims to develop a device that absorbs water vapor from humid air and splits it into hydrogen and oxygen directly using the sun’s energy.
DIFFER and TME demonstrated the efficacy of their envisioned water vapor-electrolysis technology in a year-long joint feasibility study. The researchers developed a novel solid-state photoelectrochemical cell that was able to first capture water from ambient air and then generate hydrogen upon illumination by sunlight.
In addition, Toyota announced that LIFT has received a research grant from the ENW PPS, a Dutch government initiative to fund public-private partnerships in advanced engineering sectors.

Bloom Energy and SK D&D Announce Distributorship Agreement for Fuel Cell Deployments in South Korea
|
On February 5, FCHEA member Bloom Energy and SK D&D, the real estate and renewable energy development arm of South Korea's SK Group, announced a new distributorship agreement for the direct supply of Bloom Energy fuel cells for projects developed by SK D&D.
This is Bloom Energy's second distribution agreement with an SK Group company, following one with SK Engineering & Construction announced in November 2018 to serve the utility-scale fuel cell market in South Korea. The SK D&D distributorship will serve projects self-developed by D&D and potential future SK C&I applications in Korea.

Hexagon Renames Xperion Division, Unifies Hydrogen and Light-Duty Vehicle Business Units under Hexagon Purus
|
On January 28, FCHEA member Hexagon Composites announced that its Xperion division ihas changed its name to Hexagon Purus, and will encompass all group-wide hydrogen and light-duty vehicle businesses.
According to Hexagon Purus, this restructuring was done to clarify and sharpen the company's focus on developing clean energy mobility solutions.

myFC to Develop Smart Cases for Smartphones, Initiates Collaboration with Case Manufacturer Krusell
|
On February 19, myFC announced its intent to develop a smart smartphone case with fuel cells, incorporating its LAMINA MAX platform for fuel cell integration. The LAMINA INcase will be developed in collaboration with case manufacturer Krusell, who myFC have entered into a non-exclusive partnership with.
The collaboration has already developed prototypes of the JAQ Hybrid fuel cell charger, as well as a prototypes of the LAMINA INcase. The LAMINA INcase will be used to extend the battery life of cell phones through the fuel cells integrated into the case.

Air Products and Saudi Aramco to Build Saudi Arabia's First Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Fueling station
|
On January 25, Air Products announced an agreement with Saudi Aramco to jointly build the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) fueling station in Saudi Arabia. According to Air Products, both companies will establish a pilot fleet of Toyota Mirai FCVs for which high-purity compressed hydrogen will be dispensed at the new fueling station.

Air Products’ SmartFuel hydrogen fueling technology will be incorporated into the new station to supply the vehicles with compressed hydrogen. The collected data during this pilot phase of the project will help both companies assess future applications of fuel cell transportation technology in the local environment. The hydrogen refueling station is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2019.

Intelligent Energy Fuel Cell Module Selected for AJC Trailers' Temporary Site Cabin; London Metropolitan Policy Complete Trial of Scooters with Intelligent Energy Fuel Cell Modules
|
On February 6, Intelligent Energy announced that AJC Trailers, a manufacturer of mobile and static temporary site cabins, has selected the company's fuel cell 1 kilowatt (kW) fuel cell module (FCM) for their new zero-emission EcoSmart welfare cabins.
AJC Trailers have designed the new EcoSmart welfare cabin to house the FCM in a small storage area and have coupled it with an advanced solar power system which provides additional power on sunnier days. The EcoSmart welfare cabin with Intelligent Energy's FCM was exhibited by AJC Trailers this week at the Executive Hire Show in Coventry, United Kingdom.

Hyundai to Use Hydrogen Fuel Cell System for Backup Power at Fuel Cell Vehicle Component Factory
|
On February 13, Hyundai Mobis, the automotive parts supplier for the Hyundai Motor Group, announced the installation of a hydrogen fuel cell power system at its fuel cell vehicle (FCV) components manufacturing facility in Chungju, South Korea.
Hyundai Mobis states that the 'emergency hydrogen power generation system' will be used for emergency power during power grid failures at the factory, and as auxiliary power during seasonal peak times. The system is now operating on a pilot basis at the Chungju facility, which Hyundai reports is the world's first dedicated factory for producing FCV powertrains.
According to Hyundai Mobis, the company connected five hydrogen fuel cells used in the NEXO FCV to form a power generation system with a maximum capacity of 450 kilowatts. This corresponds to about 7% of the total power consumption of the Chungju plant.

Hyundai Mobis states that the company plans to install additional emergency hydrogen power generation systems at other production facilities in South Korea and abroad.

Spurred by Toyota Investments, Chinese City to Establish Fuel Cell Vehicle Industrial Center
|
On February 12, China's state-owned
Xinhua press agency reported plans from the city of Changshu in east China's Jiangsu Province to promote the development of the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) industry with Toyota.
The Changshu city government plans to establish a 'hydrogen vehicle industrial cluster' with an annual industrial output of 100 billion yuan (~$14.8 billion U.S. dollars) by 2030. According to an industry development plan released on February 11, the city aims to build a network of public hydrogen refueling stations and replace some buses, logistics, and sanitation vehicles with FCVs by 2022.
Toyota Motor R&D Center (China) Co., Ltd. Is based in Changshu and has been testing its Mirai FCV there since late 2017. The R&D Center recently built a hydrogen refueling station in Changshu. Aside from Toyota, Changshu is home to various automobile and car parts companies and has an annual hydrogen production capacity of more than 100 million cubic meters, according to the city government.

MyFC Designs Higher-Energy PowerCard for Fuel Cell Power Bank; Receives European Union Funding for Continued Fuel Cell Development
|
On February 6, myFC announced the development of a new PowerCard to charge JAQ Hybrid, the company's fuel cell power bank product. According to myFC, the new PowerCard can supply up to 31,000 joules compared to its current 17,000 joule card. The current PowerCard is now in the process of being adapted to charge an integrated fuel cell in a smartphone, LAMINA MAX, and will be phased out over time for the more powerful card.

In addition, on February 7, myFC announced that it was awarded SEK 500,000 (~$54,000) from the European Union's Horizon 2020 initiative for continued research and development (R&D) of micro-fuel cell technologies. Horizon 2020 is aimed at providing R&D funding to small and medium-sized companies that are not backed by large-scale research funds. According to myFC, it now qualifies for the next round, which can award up to €2.5 million (~$2.8 million) per company.

On February 1, Air Liquide announced that Ole Hoefelmann, President of Air Liquide Advanced Technologies U.S. LLC. and Vice President of Air Liquide Hydrogen Energy, Americas, has been selected to serve as the 2019 Chair for the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP), an FCHEA member.
Hoefelmann, as Chair, will support the CaFCP’s mission to expand the market for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in California.

Hyundai to Construct Hydrogen Refueling Station at South Korea Parliament Building
|
On February 11, South Korea's
Yonhap news agency reported that the South Korean government will allow Hyundai to construct a hydrogen station for fuel cell vehicles at the National Assembly Proceeding Hall in Seoul.
Sung Yun-mo, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, made the announcement in Seoul while reviewing the country's "regulatory sandbox," a government initiative that allows small-scale, live testing of innovations by private firms in a controlled environment under the regulator's provision.
In addition to the National Assembly hydrogen refueling station, the government also authorized Hyundai to install two other hydrogen stations in southern Seoul.

H2 Mobility Issues Annual Report on German Hydrogen Fueling Station Deployment
|
On February 5, Germany's H2 Mobility partnership issued its annual progress report for 2018. H2 Mobility was formed in 2015 to accelerate the initial deployment of hydrogen refueling infrastructure for fuel cell vehicles (FCV) in Germany, and includes FCHEA members Air Liquide, The Linde Group, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota.
Among H2 Mobility's milestones for 2018 was the construction of 26 new hydrogen refueling stations, with 14 of them open for retail FCV customers. At the end of 2018, there were 60 hydrogen refueling stations open across Germany, with 54 stations operated by the partnership.
According to H2 Mobility, demand for hydrogen refueling at these stations tripled from 2017. In addition, the partnership reports that 50 new hydrogen stations are now in planning or construction.

DOE Solicitation for the High Performance Computing for Materials Program
|
It will be the second solicitation for the HPC4Mtls Program and the seventh for the HPC4Mfg Program. The solicitation seeks qualified industry partners to participate in short-term, collaborative projects with DOE’s national laboratories to address key manufacturing and materials challenges. Selected projects will receive access to the national laboratories’ high-performance computing (HPC) facilities and expertise to help address key challenges in U.S. manufacturing and material development.
The HPC4Mtls Program is led by the Office of Fossil Energy with support from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE) Fuel Cell Technologies Office and Vehicle Technologies Office. Its focus is on enhancing the U.S. materials-development, fabrication, and manufacturing industry to investigate, improve, and scale methods that will accelerate the development and deployment of materials that perform well in extreme environments. For this solicitation, the HPC4Mtls Program seek proposals that will address key challenges in developing, modifying, and/or qualifying new or modified materials that perform well in severe and complex energy application environments through the use of HPC modeling, simulation, and data analysis.

2019 DERA National Grant Program Request for Applications
|
The Unites States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is pleased to announce the release of the 2019 Diesel Emissions Reductions Act (DERA) Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program Request for Applications (RFA). EPA is announcing the availability of approximately $40 million in competitive grant funding through this RFA. The Program is soliciting applications nationwide for projects that achieve significant diesel emission reductions, particularly from fleets operating in poor air quality areas.
Eligible applicants include regional, state, local or tribal agencies, or port authorities, with jurisdiction over transportation or air quality. Nonprofit organizations may apply if they provide pollution reduction or educational services to diesel fleet owners or have, as their principal purpose, the promotion of transportation or air quality.
Applications must be submitted electronically to EPA through Grants.gov no later than Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at 8:59 PM PST in order to be considered for funding.
Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands) will accept applications requesting up to $4,000,000 in DERA grant funds.
Region 10 (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington) will accept applications requesting up to $1,000,000 in DERA grant funds.

FY 2020 DoD Call for Proposals: Environmental and Installation Energy and Water Technologies
|
The Department of Defense's (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) has released its Fiscal Year 2020 solicitation. The ESTCP Office is interested in receiving pre-proposals for innovative environmental and installation energy technology demonstrations that address the DoD requirements listed in the solicitation.
The purpose of ESTCP is to demonstrate and validate promising innovative technologies that target DoD’s most urgent environmental and installation energy needs and are projected to pay back the investment through cost savings, improved efficiencies, or improved outcomes. ESTCP responds to high priority DoD environmental and installation energy technology requirements and the need to improve defense readiness by reducing the drain on the Department’s operation and maintenance dollars caused by real world commitments such as environmental restoration, waste and facility management, range sustainability, energy security, and water conservation. The goal is to enable promising technologies to receive regulatory and end-user acceptance and be fielded and commercialized more rapidly. To achieve this goal, ESTCP projects create a partnership between technology developers, responsible DoD organizations, and the regulatory community.
All proposals must respond to a Topic Area associated with the solicitation. ESTCP projects are formal demonstrations in which innovative technologies are rigorously evaluated. ESTCP demonstrations are conducted at DoD facilities and sites to document improved efficiency, reduced liability, improved environmental outcomes, and cost savings.
All pre-proposals are due March 7, 2019 by 2:00 PM ET.

H2 Refuel Accelerator Seeks Innovations for the Adoption of Hydrogen Infrastructure and Supply Chain Technologies
|
Fraunhofer TechBridge is now accepting applications for the H2 Refuel Accelerator, in partnership with two of the country's leading cleantech startup incubators, Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon in Brooklyn, NY and Greentown Labs in Somerville, MA. The H2 Refuel Accelerator, sponsored by Shell, Toyota and NYSERDA, is seeking innovations for the adoption of hydrogen infrastructure and supply chain technologies through cost reduction, reliability and new capabilities. Solutions of interest to both Shell and Toyota include, among others:
- Startup technologies that promote reduction of capital costs, operating costs or streamlining of infrastructure construction;
- Startup technologies that increase the reliability of hydrogen infrastructure and capabilities on a global scale;
- New capabilities in the full range of the hydrogen value chain and infrastructure.
Applicants will be evaluated based on the potential impact of their solution to enhance current and future markets using hydrogen as an energy source for mobility. This program offers unparalleled collaboration opportunities for startups that want to bring their technology from concept to market with the support of Shell and Toyota. The selected awardee(s) are eligible for one or more of the following:
- Up to $50,000 in startup technology validation, demonstration and piloting services from Fraunhofer USA Centers or Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft Institutes;
- Desk space at one or both of the partnered incubators;
- 80+ hours of training and mentorship from the region's top business and industry experts;
- Access to mentors and connections from Shell and Toyota's networks as well as the combined networks of the Urban Future Lab and Greentown Labs.
Moreover, this opportunity provides the context and framework to build close relationships with Shell and Toyota which may, upon program conclusion, potentially result in an investment, joint development agreement, technical project, pilot and/or additional partnership format(s).

Pennsylvania ZEV Infrastructure Grant Program
|
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently launched a new grant program for zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) charging and fueling stations to increase options for ZEV owners and encourage more people to consider these clean vehicles for their next car. The funding comes from Pennsylvania’s $118 million settlement with Volkswagen Group of America for cheating on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions tests.
The grants are available through Governor Tom Wolf’s Driving PA Forward initiative. The goal of the initiative is to permanently reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution from vehicles.
Up to $3 million in grants is available for acquisition, installation, operation, and maintenance of ZEV fast-charging equipment and hydrogen fuel cell equipment through 2019. Grants are awarded as reimbursements after completed projects, with a maximum amount of $500,000. The amount awarded depends on the charging or fueling capacity of the proposed equipment.
Application deadlines are 4:00 PM on July 15 and December 16, 2019. All applications from each period will be reviewed.

NYSERDA Stationary Fuel Cell Program
|
NYSERDA’s Stationary Fuel Cell Program aims to quickly increase the amount of electricity produced by fuel cell systems in New York State. By providing $15 million over two years, NYSERDA will help facilities to reduce the upfront costs of installing and operating fuel cells and support commercially viable fuel cell systems that help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
NYSERDA will provide $7.5 million a year for two years for a total of $15 million to support new installations of stationary fuel cell systems at eligible sites. No system can receive more than $1 million from NYSERDA.
Incentives are divided into two main categories:
- Total Base Incentives, which include base incentives determined by installed capacity, and grid independent incentives based on the capability for operating when there are outages
- Bonus Incentives which are based on location of the site and whether the site is deemed to be critical infrastructure

South Coast AQMD Hydrogen Infrastructure Partnership Program
|
This Program Opportunity Notice (PON) seeks to expand the availability of hydrogen refueling infrastructure in the South Coast AQMD region by making available a source of co-funding that can be accessed by the
Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC’s) strategic partners. The intent is to provide funding that can be used to improve the financial viability of a candidate hydrogen refueling station that has already undergone vetting by the Energy Commission or South Coast AQMD, or is being proposed by a public agency or industry stakeholder that will undergo evaluation by the MSRC, Energy Commission, or South Coast AQMD. The goal is to have this funding source readily available so it can be tapped by our strategic partners during and within the course of their regular procurement processes.
To this end, the MSRC has allocated $3,000,000 in Clean Transportation Funding from its FY 2016-’18 Work Program for the MSRC’s Hydrogen Infrastructure Partnership Program. This is an
initial funding allocation; the MSRC reserves the right to increase the funding available under this PON by allocating additional funds from either the FY 2016-’18 Discretionary Fund or a future Work Program.
The period of submittal under this PON closes on April 10, 2020, unless extended by the MSRC.
