Please welcome two new staff members to the J-School Student Services office.
Himee Kamatuka is the new recruitment coordinator. She is a first-generation American from Lawrence and a KU School of Journalism graduate. She has worked with KU TRIO programs guiding first-generation and low-income students through the college process.
Eddie Muñoz is the new academic advisor. He grew up in Lawrence and has been a Jayhawk all of his life. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from KU in 2002 and is currently pursuing a master's in higher education administration. Before joining the J-School, he served as the executive assistant to the vice provost for student affairs.

Steve Rottinghaus,
career and outreach coordinator, presented a session on ways to engage students without using events during the Kansas Association of Colleges and Employers annual conference last week in Wichita, Kansas. The presentation was titled, "Are You There, Students? It's Me ... The Career Center." He also participated in a panel discussion, "Building Our Young Talent: Best Practices for Supervising Undergrads in Career Services."

Research and presentations

Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen's co-authored work has been accepted for a poster presentation at the 2019 Society For Research On Nicotine and Tobacco Annual Meeting. This project, funded by the Children's Mercy Healthy Lifestyle and Nutrition Grant, examined how media literacy techniques changed adolescents' brain responses to e-cigarette advertisements. This project is an extension of Chen's first-authored work published in Addiction Biology in 2018.
On Friday, Dec. 7,
Associate Professor Mugur Geana will chair a workshop on community-academia collaboration to recruit participants to cancer clinical trials. The workshop targets health-care providers, community organizations and patient advocates and counts toward Continuous Medical Education credits.
Assistant Professor Joseph Erba is one of the panelists at the workshop. On Thursday, Dec. 6, Dr. Erba and Dr. Geana will present their research titled, "Information sources, awareness and perceptions of clinical trials among inner-city, low-income Black and White current cancer patients."

Food pantry
A recent survey indicated that 30 percent of KU students reported experiencing food insecurity. That's nearly one in three. In addition, the end of the semester brings stress for many students. If you are one of those students, faculty and staff are here to help. The J-School has created a food pantry in Room 111A inside the Clarkson Gallery for students who need a little help to get by. Students who need assistance can drop in and take what they need. Students also have other options available on campus and in Lawrence -- visit cco.ku.edu for a full list of food resources. For those students who might be feeling stressed or overwhelmed, please take advantage of mental health resources available to KU students. Visit the KU Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) website for information, to make an appointment with a counselor, or visit the CAPS self-help library. Do not hesitate to reach out to any trusted faculty member in the J-School for help any time or email jschool@ku.edu.

Assistant Professor Joseph Erba's students will present to their client, Communities in Schools, a national nonprofit organization, at 6 p.m. on Dec. 5 in the Sabatini Multicultural Resource Center. Due to limited seating, please email Erba if you would like to attend the presentations.

North Topeka Arts and Entertainment District, at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 in the NOTO Arts Center in Topeka.

First-year honors students from Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen's "Just Breathe: Mindfulness Meditation in the Modern World" course presented their final projects at the First-Year Honors Symposium in the Ballroom of the Kansas Union on Dec. 2. In this course, students from a variety of backgrounds examined the definition of mindfulness meditation; explored the intersections of meditation, art, and music; engaged in practices of yoga, visualization, loving kindness meditation, and meditative breathing techniques; and researched topics on mindfulness and eating, physical activity, music, stress reduction, anxiety, religion and workplace.

Presets for Lightroom
is offering is $500 bi-annual scholarship. Applicants must
research and compose an essay-style Adobe Lightroom tutorial on one of four selected topics. Deadline to apply is Dec. 15. Get more details here.
Applications are now open for Buff Guy Media's Digital Media Scholarship Program. Students applying for the $1,500 scholarship must answer three questions relating to digital technology. Deadline to enter is Dec. 7. Get more details here.
Applications are now being accepted for the Radio Television Digital News Association's 2019 scholarships and fellowships. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 18. RTDNF offers eight scholarships for journalism students and four fellowships for professional broadcast or digital journalists with fewer than 10 years of experience. Learn more here.
The Great Plains Journalism Awards contest is now accepting applications. The contest is an opportunity for students in an eight-state region to be recognized for their work. Students also can win $1,500 scholarships in five categories. Deadline to apply is Jan. 31.

Deadlines are approaching to apply for internships in Washington, D.C., as part of DCinternships.org, a program designed for students to gain experience working in the nation's capital. Fellowship opportunities for minorities
Journalism in the Era of Disinformation Fellowship
Cultural Vistas, a nonprofit organization that provides international exchange opportunities to students and young professionals, invites students to apply to the Journalism in the Era of Disinformation Fellowship (JED), a funded fellowship program that gives student journalists from the United States and Germany the opportunity to meet their peers and learn about the role that disinformation plays in political coverage in both countries. Each year, up to eight German and eight American journalism students are selected to participate in this weeklong program in Washington, D.C., and New York, which will focus on political coverage in the United States and Germany and analyze the trend of "fake news."

Fellowship program in Germany
Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics is now accepting applications for its 2019 journalism program. FASPE is a free, two-week fellowship program in professional ethics and ethical leadership that begins by examining the actions and choices of German and international journalists in covering and enabling Nazi policies. Deadline to apply is Dec. 28.

Gary Mark Smith, 1984 J-School graduate, is hosting a party to launch his final book project and to thank the KU and Lawrence communities for helping him achieve his goals during his 40-year career photographing the poetry of everyday life on the streets of the world. The book, "Travelogueing The Dark Side: Gatecrashing History, Brainstorming Access, and Engineering Art out of Circumstance -- the ExtremeOphile Field Notes of a One-of-a-Kind Lifetime Art Project Photographing the Streets of the Civilized World's Most Frightening Discomfort Zones." The party is Dec. 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Cider Gallery, 810 Pennsylvania St., in Lawrence, Kansas, with a brief artist comment and Q&A session at 7 p.m. The book is available before launch by mail and can be ordered by calling 785-749-2787.
