Tabletop Exercise Pacific Trident II Report Launch and Panel Discussion on December 6, 2018
Sasakawa USA will hold a panel discussion on its recently executed Exercise Pacific Trident II from 2-3:30 p.m. December 6 in the Crystal Room at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, DC. Exercise Pacific Trident II was an unclassified tabletop exercise designed to test the policy, diplomatic, and military responses of the United States, Japan, and South Korea to North Korean sanction evasion activities and signs of internal instability. Copies of "Testing the U.S.-Japan and U.S.-ROK Security Alliances: Tabletop Exercise Pacific Trident II," a report detailing the exercise and its findings, will be available.

News: Deadline to apply for winter 2019 Congressional Staff Program on Asia program is December 31, 2018
Applications are open for the winter 2019 cohort of the Congressional Staff Program on Asia (CSPA), which will commence soon after the inauguration of the 116th Congress. This bipartisan educational certificate program provides Capitol Hill staff members with an opportunity to engage U.S. officials and leading experts on a range of contemporary, policy-relevant topics in U.S.-Indo-Pacific relations, and expand their network of congressional colleagues, officials, and experts.

News: Sasakawa USA announces recipients of latest round of mini-grants to JET Alumni Association chapters and subchapters
This is the third year Sasakawa USA and the U.S. Japan Exchange & Teaching Programme Alumni Association (USJETAA) have partnered to offer a mini-grant program to JETAA chapters and subchapters. The program is intended to help chapters strengthen the JET alumni network and elevate their leadership role in their local U.S.-Japan community.
In the second and final application cycle, two additional 2018-2019 recipients were named: the JET Alumni Association of Minnesota to co-host a one-day networking forum for local U.S.-Japan organizations in Minneapolis, and the JET Alumni Association of New England to organize a kimono workshop and discussion in Boston.

True Stories from Japan: Going Home to Kyushu after 100+ Years
Dr. Phyllis Genther Yoshida, Sasakawa USA Senior Fellow for Energy and Technology, visited Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu in October to explore and learn more about the hometowns of her husband's grandparents. Like many third-generation Japanese Americans, her husband knew little other than the prefectures from which his grandparents had emmigrated. In the latest True Stories from Japan, Yoshida writes about their successful efforts to reunite with distant relatives, concluding that "...it is possible to be welcomed home again even after 100+ years."

Jim Schoff, Senior Fellow for the Asia Program at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, joined Dr.
Sayuri Romei, Sasakawa USA Fellow for Security and Foreign Affairs, and a group of two dozen policy experts for a
policy lunch discussion on the impact of U.S. political turmoil on Japan's foreign policy. Moving forward, Schoff suggested that since Japan cannot resolve domestic issues in the United States, it should focus on broader challenges created by globalization, and should push the G20 towards governing norms on areas such as space, the arctic, and cyber.
The event took place on November 14, 2018, at Sasakawa USA.
