Gelardi Student Center Opens
Sherman College of Chiropractic celebrated its commitment to Spartanburg and to principled chiropractic education during the opening of the Thom and Betty Gelardi Student Center February 8 on campus. About 600 guests attended, with many college alumni and supporters watching via livestream on the college’s Facebook page. The Gelardi Student Center underscores Sherman College’s focus on student success and includes a library, bookstore, campus café, large meeting spaces, student study suites, lounge areas and more.
Sherman College founder Dr. Thom Gelardi spoke during the ceremony of the commitment of students throughout the college’s history. “The success of Sherman College’s many events and undertakings was – and still is – due to students volunteering many hours of service and time to the college and its mission,” he shared. “It is indeed a great honor, then, to have our names on this building – a building with a goal of serving the students of Sherman College, the future of the chiropractic profession.”

Time for Alumni Association Membership Renewal
Sherman graduates, make sure to check your mail for the Alumni Association’s yearly membership renewal information. Renewals were mailed in an envelope this year and have a return addressed envelope inside as well.
Online payment options are available too, and they are listed on the mailed brochure.

Lyceum 2019: Early Bird Deadline February 28
The Continuing Education Department at Sherman College of Chiropractic is taking Lyceum 2019 to “The Next Level” and will be hosting its annual continuing education and homecoming event May 2-4, 2019, on our newly renovated campus.

ACP Europe III Concludes in London, England
The Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers (ACP) concluded another successful session with eight individuals defending their theses and earning the distinct ACP honors on February 2-3, 2019. Sherman College alumna Dr. Valerie Pennacchio, ’90, and ACP alum Dr. Jaime Pinillos joined Sherman College Philosophy Department Chair Dr. Bill Decken, ’86, D.Ph.CS, as facilitators over the course of the class’ fifth and final module in London, England.
Participants earning the
prestigious ACP distinction include Christian Caswell, Marina Papadimitriou, Loula Papadimitriou, Jeff Gormley, Justin Wright, Travis Corcoron, Marco Djahanbaz and Miguel Jasperse. Eric Bourg Memorial 5K Walk/Run at Lyceum 2019
Eric Bourg was a student at Sherman College that was passionate about chiropractic and had a genuine love for people and health. Sadly, he passed away in early 2018. Sherman students have collaborated to keep his spirit alive through the first-ever Eric Bourg Memorial 5K Run/Walk at Lyceum 2019. All proceeds will go to a scholarship to represent what Eric would have wanted most: graciously helping others and promoting the profession of chiropractic.
Many of Eric’s family members are connected to Sherman College, including his parents, Dr. James Bourg (1983 Sherman graduate) and Dr. Monica Kemp (1981 Sherman graduate) and his aunt and uncle, Jeffrey Lamont (1986 Sherman College graduate) and Sylvia Kemp-Lamont (1985 Sherman College graduate).

Sherman Staff Leading in the Community
To strengthen relationships and bridges between Sherman College and the Upstate area, many Sherman employees are involved in community initiatives and board leadership.
Senior Director of Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Valida Foster has been selected for the Women’s Leadership Institute at Furman University. This program was developed to benefit women leaders who have demonstrated successful leadership and a willingness to help and mentor others. In addition, Foster was chosen for the United Way of the Piedmont’s Nonprofit Fellows program, which is designed to prepare individuals for nonprofit board service. Members will develop leadership and critical thinking skills, enhance their knowledge of the community, and be equipped to lead with confidence.
Director of Public Relations Karen Brower Rhodes, MBA, serves as vice chair of the Board of Directors of Safe Homes-Rape Crisis Coalition (SHRCC) in Spartanburg and recently accepted the responsibility as chair of the Selection Committee for the organization’s new president/CEO. She will become chair of the Board of Directors in 2020. SHRCC is a private, non-profit organization providing assistance programs to victims of domestic violence in Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union Counties, and victims of sexual assault in Spartanburg and Cherokee Counties.

Sherman Staff Council Established, Officers Elected
Looking to provide targeted opportunities to contribute to the overall growth, effectiveness and success of Sherman College, staff members have recently formed a Staff Council.
The following staff members were elected to leadership positions: President Kristy Shepherd; Vice President Megan Georgion; Secretary Nick Watson; and at-large members Caroline Gregory and Ronitra Owens. Committees established include Communications and Recognition, Community Service, Policies and Procedures, and Professional Development.
In accordance with its mission, the Staff Council will facilitate communication between staff members and the college’s executive administration by advocating for and representing the interests of the college’s staff.
The council will further seek to identify, develop and promote opportunities for staff members’ professional development and recognize the numerous and significant contributions and accomplishments of the college’s diverse and enthusiastic staff population.
Finally, the council will seek to build and maintain a stronger sense of interdepartmental collegiality among staff members as well as between the college’s faculty, staff and administrative populations.

Marques Receives Two Scholarships
Sherman College of Chiropractic student Debora Marques has been awarded two scholarships for the winter 2019 quarter. Marques was selected as the recipient of the H. T. Hughes Chiropractic Medal 75 Scholarship; it was awarded by H. Brad Hughes, D.C., ’81, trustee of the scholarship fund. Applicants were asked to submit three different essays responding to questions regarding chiropractic philosophy, making chiropractic a career choice and explaining chiropractic care to potential patients.
In addition, Marques was awarded a Carol Hall Scholarship for students enrolled in a CCE-accredited chiropractic college. She was selected based on her academic excellence as well as her essay response describing her desire to be a chiropractor. According to Dr. Dennis Hall of the Hall Clinic, the directors of the scholarship program were impressed with Marques’ credentials and goals. Marques is in her 11th quarter at Sherman College and expects to graduate this December.
Marques expresses her appreciation for the scholarship assistance she has received. “The H.T. Hughes Medal 75 and the Carol Hall Scholarships are a huge blessing on this journey to finish my education at Sherman,” she said. “Soon graduation will be approaching, and it feels bittersweet. I come from beautiful Lisbon, Portugal, and I can’t wait to start practicing there. Chiropractic in Portugal has grown more in the last couple of years than ever before, and I’m excited to be part of this change.” The photo above shows Marques on her first day of classes at Sherman College.

#FinAidFeb Keeps Sherman College Students Informed
Throughout the month of February, the higher education community celebrates
Financial Aid Awareness Month in an effort to provide crucial information to students and families about access to federal, state, and institutional student aid. This year, the Sherman College Financial Aid Office distributed a
Financial Aid Friday email with information pertaining to financial aid, financial wellness, and free financial tips for students and employees. Relevant information was also displayed on campus televisions for the entire month.
Topics included the following: a reminder to file the 2019-2020 FAFSA and a checklist of documentation to have on hand when filing (week one); links to free online tax filing services and information about how to contact United Way of the Piedmont to schedule a free appointment with a trained tax preparer (week two); tips on how to prevent identity theft and information about how to request your free annual credit report (week three); and resources and tips for finding scholarship opportunities (week four).
In addition, the Financial Aid Office hosted a loan exit meeting for all March graduates and students who will be leaving campus soon to participate in the Practice Management Observational Elective (PMOE) program. Kelly Savoie, director of business development from Sallie Mae, presented critical information to students regarding budgeting and preparing for loan repayment. Savoie remained on campus after her presentation to answer individual questions from students as well. An online exit counseling session is required of all graduates, but the in person group and individual meetings provide an opportunity for students to get answers immediately and voice their concerns about loan repayment.
During the last week of February, the first in a series of financial wellness seminars are being offered on campus for students. Representatives from BB&T will share personal and business strategies, tools and resources to help students more easily manage their finances. The first seminar will focus on personal financial health, and the second will spotlight business financial strategies.

College Publications, Communications Honored
Sherman College took top honors in six categories of the 2019 Media Women of South Carolina (MWSC) Communications Contest; a seventh entry was awarded second place. The contest, sponsored by the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), encourages and rewards excellence in communication.
The college’s first-place projects included a personality profile article, the college’s
Sherman alumni magazine (which won two categories), the enewsletter
Sherman Shares, an advertisement for the Chiropractic Health Center, and a speech written for the American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) conference. The second-place entry was a speech written for the college’s Lyceum/homecoming.
Director of Public Relations Karen Brower Rhodes, MBA, produced these communications in 2018 as part of initiatives spearheaded by the Office of Institutional Advancement and Public Relations. First-place award winners for South Carolina will move on to the national contest for judging later this year.

Health Center Names Intern of the Month
The Chiropractic Health Center faculty recognize an intern each month who excels in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism, and analytical and adjusting technique. The January 2019
Intern of the Month
is Carissa Supry, a thirteenth-quarter student from Belmont, NH. She graduates in June 2019 and plans to open a practice in Colorado.
