As we finally move toward spring, we feel it is time to address some important issues with our students. Working with our School Resource Officer, Joe Kolp, we are meeting with small groups of students during House. Officer Kolp put together a wonderful presentation addressing four areas of concern. We have seen an increase of office referrals in these areas:
Social Media (bullying and harassment); Texting sexually explicit pictures and the law (2nd Degree Felony), the effects on college and career as well; Vaping (health effects, school discipline and the law); and School Safety (keeping outside doors secured, see something, say something).
The feedback from students and staff has been very positive. It is an opportunity to bring awareness and answer questions about relevant school (and life) issues. The Delaware Police Department "Officer of the Year" Joe Kolp delivers a powerful and engaging presentation. Our students have asked insightful questions and hopefully we can be proactive rather than reactive to these important issues. If you have any questions about any of these topics, please do not hesitate to contact me.
We are also working with the Delaware County Highway Patrol on a Safe Driving campaign with our students. We are looking for parents who would like to join us in this educational program. We have added signs to the school exits about texting and distracted driving. We are also making announcements reminding students to be safe while driving. If you would like more information, please check out our twitter page through the
Delaware Health District.
