Jazz Singer Showcase - Looking for a New Home
|
Update from Joe Reid
We learned last week that the Loading Dock is going out of business. So we are looking for a new venue.
Maybe some BACA members have ideas on where we could convene the next Jazz Singer Showcase v3?
Many BACA members supported the Showcase over the last eight years and we are very thankful for that!

Message from the President - Jim Keating |
|
BACA is moving forward into 2019 with new ideas and initiatives.
Our Cabaret Performance Masterclass with
Carol O'Shaughnessy
is filling up but there's room for auditors. Come get wisdom just from watching.
Many thanks to treasurer Carole Bundy for producing the
Performer's Showcase series. We're trying a new format with more performers doing fewer songs produced by Linda Marks.
Our flagship Open Mic series in Watertown is a mainstay with ever-talented accompanists, and members get to sing and practice as emcee. I appreciate the volunteer efforts of Linda Marks, Kevin Luey and Casey Thomas on sound, and the many people who pitch in every month. Many festive attendees get refreshments afterwards at Asiana Fusion.
I hope to see you at our events. I appreciate our members and supporters.
Yours in music and self-expression,

BACA Cabaret Performance Masterclass - With Carol O'Shaughnessy and Tom LaMark |
|
By Jim Keating
A New Format
Held on both -
Saturday, March 23 &
Wednesday, March 27
BACA has arranged with Carol O'Shaughnessy to instruct a masterclass in cabaret performance. Tom LaMark will provide additional coaching as accompanist. I h
ad the wonderful experience of seeing Carol coaching singers at Provincetown CabaretFest and she provided each singer thoughtful, supportive coaching specific to their needs.
Carol will be presenting a class on "The Ethics and Business of Performing'" at this year's Provincetown CabaretFest, but this is her only performance masterclass.
This year's masterclass will be held
Saturday,
March 23, at the
Napoleon Room at Club Café
and the students' final performance will be held
at the start of the BACA Open Mic
, Wednesday, March 27.
Students perform a final song and Carol O'Shaughnessy will provide post-performance evaluation. The regular open mic follows.
For more details and to register, visit the BACA Events page.

"A History of American Cabaret"
- From Our Archives . . .
|
|
By Hildy Grossman
Taking us on a quick and comprehensive review of cabaret from 1910 to the present, Hildy Grossman covers developments and changes in cabaret. Some terms, clubs and performers may sound familiar - Volstead Act, bootlegged whiskey, torch songs, Delmonico's, The Copacabana, The Cotillion Room, Helen Morgan, Sophie Tucker, Pearl Bailey, Bobbie Short, Bette Midler and Julie Wilson.
Hildy explains how cabarets went from night clubs, to speakeasies, members-only clubs to supper clubs, and eventually to self-produced shows. You'll learn a lot in a short amount of time!
From the BACA website Archives page, download the
Winter 2008 newsletter, and read her article on page 6.
Bonus Points: Who's in this picture? Hint: it's one of the above names.
