Henry Schroeder: Putting the "Cheer" Back in
"Cheerleading"
By Gloria Cueva, ERYC Collaborative Management Program Coordinator
You've seen cheerleaders lift people up in the air, but have you seen them lift people's spirits? That's exactly what I experienced when I interviewed this bright, young man. Before I knew what was happening, I was smiling, giggling, full of good cheer and ready to yell for the home team!
Henry is a 9
th
grader at Battle Mountain High School this year and wasted no time contributing to his school. He joined the cheerleading squad during football season. When asked why he joined, he said, "Because I like the Huskies" and he said, "I worked hard to be a cheerleader."

Our Awesome Members
In honor of all we do in this community, and all the nonprofits in the area, we are saluting each of our member organizations. Together, we are stronger. We've learned we have a large group of passionate leaders, hardworking volunteers, dedicated staff and loving caregivers. Whether building a home or stuffing a food basket, helping a girl learn to pedal a bike or a child to discover the wonder of a book. Hats off to all of you who make a difference every day.

Difference Maker of the Month: Catholic Charities of the Western Slope
There are so many organizations that do good-but the only way they can do good is with passionate volunteers and strong-willed staff. This month's difference maker is the Western Slope office of Catholic Charities. In November, just when the weather was changing and a chill settled in, they collected, cleaned and distributed hundreds of jackets to keep cold kids warm. That is just one aspect of all they do in addition to serve the most vulnerable in our community with a number of programs, including victim services, emergency assistance, wage theft cases (helping workers when their employers won't pay them), housing fraud and mediation, and working with community partners to identify and address service gaps. There is also have an immigration attorney on staff.
Do you know someone in our community who deserves recognition? Someone who goes above and beyond? Let us know! Email us at [email protected]!

Eat Chat Parent: Teaching Resiliency
January 7 | Berry Creek Middle School | Dinner at 5:30, presentation at 6
January 8 | Eagle Valley Middle School | Dinner at 5:30, presentation at 6
It's no secret that our kids are stressed out. Some are anxious. Some are depressed. In fact, Healthy Kids Colorado Survey results from 2017 have told us that 32 percent of local middle school students are feeling sad and hopeless. Unfortunately, this is an increase from 24 percent in 2015; as a matter of fact studies show us that youth are feeling more stressed out than ever before. This is where Eat Chat Parent plays a vital role: We are here to help you and your kids.
Eagle River Youth Coalition and Vail Health bring the next seminar in the Eat Chat Parent Series
In order to ensure the safety of all children, an RSVP is required for childcare with the number and ages of children: [email protected].

Youth Master Plan: Share Your Opinion & Earn Money for Your Favorite Nonprofit!
SURVEY SAYS......
Your input will help to shape a community-wide plan for youth. Beginning in 2017, the Eagle River Youth Coalition has been working with local governments and agencies to create a community-wide youth master plan that will align local programs and efforts toward the same outcomes for youth. Ultimately, we want to ensure local efforts reach those who need it most, all youth have opportunities, feel supported, and are healthy. This plan will help us achieve these goals. Your input will shape how we collectively approach the work and what priorities we focus on. The first draft of the plan will be shared with community partners in early 2019.
Included in this survey are a vision statement, shared values and questions regarding your top priorities. The vision statement and goals have been agreed upon by participating agencies and we are asking you to share your thoughts about what these mean for our community.
Please provide your feedback, comments, and reflections on each question by DECEMBER 21. If you have questions, please contact [email protected]. At the end of this survey, you will be able to enter one youth-serving agency in a drawing for $100.

My alarm usually goes o
ff
at 8 A.M. I groggily reach over to my bedside table for my phone. So light and shiny, my prized possession, bringing me all the joys of other people's lives. It's just so easy, scrolling through Facebook while my eyes glaze over. The first person to greet me in the morning is the Instagram model posing in Santorini, and jealousy consumes me. Guilt overwhelms me because I'm not up at 5 A.M. doing a core workout like the tan woman on my screen. Loneliness is what I feel rolling out of bed because I don't have a cute, rich boyfriend like the girl I knew from elementary school. This was my morning routine, and it quickly became my daily routine leaving me full of regret by bed time.
"I lost control of my fingers, scrolling, scrolling, scrolling."
