121st Big Game: Stanford Cardinal 23, Cal Bears 13
Cal's senior running back Patrick Laird (28) sprinted down the sideline in front of the Cardinal bench for the game's longest run of 62 yards, late in the second quarter. Laird would finish the afternoon with 116 yards and
become the first Golden Bear running back to rush for 100 yards in back-to-back Big Games since Marshawn Lynch in 2005-06. Stanford would maintain The Axe for the ninth straight year with their 23-13 win.

Stanford's Kendall Williamson (29) delivered a hit to
Cal receiver Jeremiah Hawkins (10), knocking the ball out of his hands for the incomplete pass.

Saint Mary's Gaels 84 vs. Cal Bears 71
Justice Sueing (10), about to dunk, was Cal's (2-4) scoring leader on the night with 16 points but the Golden Bears could not subdue the hot-shooting Gaels (4-4), who collected 13 threes.
Saint Mary's rode their hot hand for a 84-71 win on their home court.

Saint Mary's center Jordan Hunter (1) blocked the shot of Cal's Jahwan Harris-Dyson (2) and finished the night with nine points, two blocked shots and one steal.

Not to be denied -- Malik Fitts, the Gaels' scoring leader on the evening with 19 points, soared in to throw down two more points late in the second half.

Sports Prep Star -- Je'Lani Clark
Riordan-San Francisco -- Basketball -- Junior
Je'Lani Clark returns to the Crusaders after a breakout sophomore season and is one of the big reasons that Riordan began the 2018-19 season ranked No. 6 in SportStars' Preseason NorCal Top 20. Through the team's first three games, Clark is averaging 21.6 points. The 6-foot-2 guard scored a team-high 31 in Riordan's 73-69 season-opening loss to Dublin at the NorCal Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 24. The Crusaders bounced back with two wins in their own Crusaders Classic tournament. Clark had 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a semifinal win over San Ramon Valley-Danville on Nov. 30. Outlaw's Outtakes
This past February, Kansas City running back Kareem Hunt committed an assault which was captured on video. Although the Chiefs and the league were made aware of the incident at the time, it was considered a "he said, she said" event, and they believed Hunt when he denied any wrongdoing. Mysteriously, neither the police, the Chiefs, nor the NFL was made aware of this video until three days ago.
When it became public, the team within hours released Hunt. No criminal charges have been filed.
In an interview, Hunt was contrite, describing himself as "
extremely embarrassed because of that video."
He repeatedly mentioned his upbringing, saying, "
I'm definitely not that type of person. My mother raised me right. I know right from wrong."
Really? He had nine months to come clean, and he didn't until the video emerged. And now, a number of NFL owners "are irate" that the league's investigators did not interview Hunt back in February.
Give me a break.
The video is clear; it shows Hunt getting into a confrontation with a woman while being restrained by others. After exchanging words with her, he shoves her before she strikes him in the face. Hunt then shoves another man into the woman, pushing her to the floor. Hunt eventually makes his way over to her and kicks her in the leg while she is on the floor.
Shortly after the incident, she unsuccessfully begged the cops to look at the building's CCTV. Not surprisingly, the cops did nothing. The building officials, with indisputable evidence of an assault in their possession, did nothing. The league did nothing. And, of course, the Chiefs did nothing to get to the bottom of the incident. After all, Hunt led the league in rushing last year, and was a key cog in their high-powered offense.
So, nine months later he's busted. But it is not just Kareem Hunt who is at fault--it is the entire culture of professional football, and it starts at the top. This is the league that did not have the guts to mete out a proper punishment to Ray Rice, the league that blackballed Colin Kaepernick for peacefully protesting police brutality. According to sources Hunt may face more than the baseline six-game suspension for violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy. They are also investigating an incident involving Hunt allegedly punching a man in the face at an Ohio resort in June. And the NFL is believed to have found enough from that incident to add to Hunt's discipline.
How many more times do we have to see yet another example of misogynistic, violent, criminal behavior on the part of an NFL player go unpunished? Can someone explain to me how the NFL, with its $8 billion annual profit, cannot get their hands on a two-minute video, but TMZ can? Or, even worse, how the Chiefs reflexively believed their player? And is the players' union innocent here?
These are questions that will probably go unanswered for some time. We are surely living in fearful and frightening times. When the president and his lackeys are the only people in the world who will not admit that Jamal Khashoggi's gruesome assassination was ordered by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, I guess anything is possible. Perhaps our biggest fear should be that we may be losing the ability to tell right from wrong.

From 2000-2005 I wrote a column for the late great Oakland Athletics Fan Coalition (OAFC) entitled
Elman Swings
, a play on the fact that I'm a musician. Some of you may remember the OAFC, an East Bay organization that at its peak had several thousand members devoted to keeping the A's in Oakland and guess what? They've succeeded. Perhaps one or two of you might remember my articles (more like rants) about baseball and society. So when the Ultimate Sports Guide asked me to compose regular screeds for this weekly blast called Outlaw's Outtakes, how could I say "No?" ('Outlaw' is their nickname for me.) -- Pete Elman

Sonoma Raceway -- 24 Hours of Lemons
24 Hours of Lemons hosted Season Finale at Sonoma Raceway
SONOMA, Calif. -- If low-budget endurance racing is up your alley, you didn't want to miss the
The 24 Hours of Lemons, an endurance road racing series for cars that cost $500 or less, concluded its 2018 race season with a two-day event featuring everything from the H20Vanagon Volkswagen to spaceship sedans to the "Insane Bolt" BMW by Team Cool Runnings. This is a one-of-a-kind endurance race that you had to see to believe.
There was plenty of noise, wacky penalties and questionably civilized fun before, during and after the on-track action on Saturday and Sunday. Following the checkered flag, there was the gala awards ceremony, wherein trophies and plaques were presented and the winner's purses were paid out in nickels.
Nearly 200 teams were entered for the 24 Hours of Lemons' final event of the year, which featured seven events in the West Region in 2018. Those vying for victory at this wacky event included a variety of themed entries from teams like Rotary Rooter, Golden Unicorn, Alpha Dawgs, Rasta Boyz, Cerveza Racing, Four Idiots Racing and Shake & Break, to name just a few. Teams traveled from nearby Petaluma, Santa Rosa and Novato and from as far away as Ypsilanti, Michigan and Park City, Utah to vie for victory.
While all this foolishness is primarily done in the name of fun, it's also done in the name of charity, as a portion of proceeds benefited Sonoma County youth-serving non-profit organizations through Speedway Children's Charities, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway.
