Honors College launches new learning communities

Want to continue living and learning with students in the Honors College?  Our interdisciplinary Learning Communities offer you the opportunity to do just that!

Honors College Learning Communities provide opportunities to live with Honors College students while...
  • taking thematic courses
  • engaging in related extra-curricular activities during the academic year
  • emphasizing a particular area of interest
  • pursuing this interest in and out of the classroom with peers/faculty
Conversations begun in class are continued in the residence hall, at dinner, at a performance or exhibit, or even on a field trip!  For Fall 2019-Spring 2020, our communities include:

Data Mine - Critical Data Studies
  • This Data Mine Learning Community, part of a collaboration with faculty in the Honors College, Purdue Libraries and the Department of Anthropology, seeks to create tools and methods to help scholars think critically and engage the public in conversation about the role of Data Science in society.---> READ MORE
Altered Harmony: Jazz and Society
  • The Jazz and Society Learning Community provides an opportunity to center jazz as a theme of your lives for an academic year. The community will be lead by the notion that, "jazz artists 'speak to each other in the language of music,'" and you will explore the nature of this artistic conversation with many of it's cultural influences, geographical variations, and temporal iterations.---> READ MORE

Note: Grants are available to help defray the cost of on-campus housing expenses for honors students with unmet financial need. Please direct questions about the grants in support of "Altered Harmony: Jazz and Society" and "The Data Mine - Critical Data Studies" to Catharine Patrone (cpatrone@purdue.edu), Senior Director of Academic and Student Affairs.
'Torch Tuesday' is BACK!

Returning by popular demand, Torch Tuesday is your chance to join Honors College staff and faculty members for conversation, advice, and camaraderie over a laid-back lunch.

Need a meal swipe? Look for an Honors staff member in the Windsor Dining Court lobby at 11:30 a.m. They'll be holding up a torch sign.

Just in time for finals week!

Celebrate the last day of the semester with hot beverages, warm treats, and cozy blanket-making to benefit residents of the Greater Lafyette YWCA's Emergency Domestic Violence Shelter.

No sewing skills required!

The fleece blankets that you help make will be given to residents when they arrive at the shelter and gifted to them when they leave.

Bring a friend, tie a few knots, make some hot cocoa, and learn more about what the shelter is doing to help prevent domestic violence and support vulnerable men, women, and children in our local community. Staff from the YWCA's Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention Program will be on hand with information about the multiple volunteer opportunities and to answer questions about how you can get involved!

Tip #15: Core Values

What Defines Me?
- As we transition from high school to college we are required, sometimes for the first time, to question the values we have been taught our whole lives.

- According to studies, well defined core values are key to collegiate success and are also highly linked to overall life satisfaction.
  • Take some time this week to think about what defines you. Write it down. Talk about it with a friend.
