February 2019 Newsletter

February is Full
of Good News!

Dear HERS Supporters,

Did you miss us? We've been so busy working on big projects (and serving our wonderful clients, of course), we didn't get a newsletter out in January. We hope this edition finds you enjoying good health and good fortune in the New Year. We are so excited to share our news this month! So without further ado...
Grand Opening!

Our New Store at Kaiser in San Leandro

We are proud to announce the opening of a new HERS program store, in partnership with an amazing team of people from Kaiser Permanente and beyond.

Many thanks to friends, supporters, clients, and board members who showed up to support HERS at the new store!

HERS staff and board members were joined by Kaiser Dr. Ming Kuan (oncology), who was instrumental in getting the store established at Kaiser San Leandro Medical Center.  San Leandro Vice Mayor Corina Lopez was there, along with JJ Olson, Barbara Hague, and Cathy Brabec, members of longtime HERS partner Tri Valley SOCKs. One of our clients, Lisa, inspired everyone with her speech.

We are incredibly grateful for the support and guidance of Kaiser Permanente staff members Mitch Winnick (COO, Kaiser San Leandro),  Melissa Goff, Kim Cunha, Kathy Moore and Dr. Kuan. HERS Board Member Dr. Rishi Sawhney was also a driving force behind this project. This dedicated team has been with us every step of the way, from welcoming our proposal to putting the finishing touches on our wonderful new space. And finally, a special word of thanks to our own Annette Lewellyn, who has worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality.

We'd like to thank everyone who came to celebrate our grand opening with us. Special thanks to  the San Leandro Chamber Team for helping to organize the event.

Kaiser patients, come see us!
We're very grateful to Kaiser Permanente for providing their patients with a new option for services! Our newest location, in an auxiliary building just minutes from the beautiful San Leandro Kaiser Hospital, will help make our services much more seamless for patients receiving hospital services and for Kaiser patients in general.

Kaiser Permanente made every effort to create a warm and welcoming space by incorporating beautiful floor coverings, paint, furniture, and art.  On prominent display is a custom quilt made specifically for our new location by Melissa Lewellyn, the daughter of Annette Lewellyn, our Director of Programs.

Speaking of Annette, she'll provide expert fitting services and compassionate care at our San Leandro store and, as at our Fremont and Pleasanton locations, we'll offer high quality bras, prostheses, and camisoles from American Breast Care, Amoena, Anita International, and Luisa Luisa.

Our charitable program, We Support, You Survive is offered at this store, so we can serve clients regardless of their financial status. We will also help clients with insurance, when applicable. Please call 510-969-7758 if you have any questions.

Another heartfelt thank you to everyone who has made it possible for us to extend our outreach and help more breast cancer survivors in the Bay Area.

Please help us share the good news!

We'll gather in the Grand Ballroom of Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, an elegant venue with lush views, with new and old friends. Enjoy specialty cocktails, fundraising games (including guest favorite "Glitz in a Glass"), live music, and a delicious three-course dinner. Other elements include a fun and very pink selfie booth, awards presentations, silent and live auctions, and celebratory dancing.

Proceeds will benefit our  Charitable Programs in support of under-served breast cancer survivors.

A program of the
Fremont Chamber of Commerce

We are honored to have been selected by the  Leadership Fremont Class of 2019 as their recipient organization. They will produce a video highlighting our services and their impact on the lives of patients/survivors. The video will premier at our Annual  People with Purpose Gala on May 4th.

Leadership Fremont empowers individuals to assume leadership roles while developing a collective resource and problem-solving network to address community needs today and in the future.

We are so grateful to the whole team and can't wait to show off the video!

Bras for the Cause
Breast Cancer Walk
with Tri-Valley SOCKs

Sat., April 1 3, 2019
5pm Registration opens
7pm Walk starts

Tri-Valley SOCKs has generously supported HERS charitable programs for many years. This wonderful organization, run entirely by volunteers, works diligently to raise funds for breast cancer-related nonprofits. Please join us at their fun and inspiring annual event in downtown Pleasanton, a five mile walk that starts and ends at Amador Valley High School. It's a festive community fundraiser, and a great way to enjoy a Spring evening with friends in support of breast cancer patients and survivors.

The theme for the 14th Annual Bras for the Cause walk is "Quest For A Cure". Please support Tri-Valley SOCKs (and HERS!) as they continue their "Quest" to end breast cancer by funding a cure, supporting those going through treatment, and spreading awareness to all through education programs.

Walkers are not required to wear decorated bras to participate in the Bras for the Cause Walk, but many do ( see videos of past walks). It's a lot of fun to wear a decorated bra and see how creative others can be, and there will be prizes!
