"The Battle for Christmas"
Did you know that for a long time in the early decades of European settlement in "America," Christmas was not regarded as a legitimate religious holiday? Come hear some of the stories of how Christmas became a beloved and sacred holiday in our country, and how Unitarians and Universalists led the way!

Potluck and Coffeehouse
Todd Schlossberg

Join Us for Good Food, Friendship and Music at the  December 14 FUUSB Potluck and Coffeehouse

Oh, the weather outside is frightful
And you deserve a night full
of good food, friends, and music
(now, who couldn't use it?)
Here's all you need to remember:
Saturday, 14 th of December
We gather together, to eat and to sing
At our monthly UU coffeehouse thing

We start with a potluck, right about six
Bring something tasty to add to the mix
An entrĂ©e perhaps, a dessert, a home brew?
Whatever you fancy, to nourish a few

Sign up, for a slot for the open mic
Or sit back and listen, if that's what you'd like
Share a poem, a story, a card trick, or song
Tap your feet, clap your hands, or just hum along

All ages are welcome, all talents are relished
It's a pretty sweet scene, don't think I embellish
Bring family, or friends, one, two, or a few
Most important of all, is just to bring you!

What : Our Monthly FUUSB Potluck and Coffeehouse
Who : Everyone! Friends and family  welcome
Where : The Parlors, First UU Society of Burlington
When : Saturday, December 14, 6-8:30 p.m.

New Database Update
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations & Finance

Beginning in January, everyone will have the opportunity to activate their profile in our new database software, Realm. When you activate your profile, you will also need to re-enter your online giving information (if you are already giving with automatic payments). If you are not already giving with automatic payments, this will be the perfect time to start! Watch the eNews in January for more information.

What is a QCD?
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations & Finance

qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a distribution from an IRA made directly to an eligible charity (FUUSB), bypassing the owner of the account. Owners of individual retirement accounts who are at least age 70 1/2 can contribute some or all of their IRAs to charity. But why would you want to do that after making contributions for years in anticipation of the day when you would retire? Because it can be advantageous from a tax perspective in a few ways.  You can read more about it at:  https://www.irs.gov/retirement-plans/retirement-plans-faqs-regarding-iras-distributions-withdrawals

So basically, this is a way to pay your pledge directly from your IRA and not pay taxes on that distribution. Contact your financial advisor if you think this might be a good option for you!
