Award: $5,000
The Anishinaabe Arts Initiative (AAI) Fellowship is made possible by the generous support of the McKnight Foundation to provide unfettered funding to an individual Native American artist to fuel his or her art in Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Mahnomen, Lake of the Woods, Becker, Roseau, Cass, and Itasca counties in Minnesota. This year, for the first time, we have two Fellowships available.

Maximum Award: $2,500 with 20% cash match.
These grants offer funding for a variety of art projects including costs related to performances or exhibitions, engagement of guest artists, public art projects, and artists-in-residence. Arts organizations may also apply to fund consultation projects in board development, fiscal management, fundraising, public relations, audience development, or assistance in designing arts programming. Funded arts projects must benefit the residents of Beltrami, Hubbard, Clearwater, Lake of the Woods, or Mahnomen Counties.

R2AC Board Member Vacancies
Currently we need one resident each from Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen counties to become a member of
our Board of Directors. This is a great opportunity to understand the workings of the granting process, to be more involved with the arts and artists of your region, and to enjoy camaraderie with others who appreciate the arts.

Individual Artist Grants Awarded
Region 2 Arts Council awarded $19,885 to individual artists in the counties of Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen. The purpose of this grant is to stimulate new artistic endeavors in the region by providing project assistance to regional artists who are seriously committed to their work and to the advancement of their artistic careers. The Individual Artist Grant Program is supported by a grant from the McKnight Foundation.
Jason Ewert
received $2,000 to upgrade his filmmaking equipment (Beltrami County).
Judith Larson
was awarded $2,000 to purchase equipment and supplies to create three-dimensional jewelry pieces, embellishments, and findings using sheet metal, wire, and metal clay.
(Lake of the Woods County).
Jim Gallagher
received $1,399 to purchase field-recording equipment to collect and produce audio stories as an independent radio producer. (Beltrami County).
Teresa McDowell
was awarded $2,000 to purchase supplies to create handmade leather mittens and moccasins.
(Lake of the Woods County).
S. Diane Kochmann
received $1,874 to purchase a portable digital piano for performing solo or with her musical group "Mixed Emotions." (Mahnomen County).
Marti Lundin
was awarded $2,000 to study two styles of traditional Northern European painting at Vesterheim Folk Art School in Decorah Iowa. (Beltrami County).
Ryan Stewart
was awarded $1,654 to purchase welding equipment and supplies to create metal art. (Clearwater County).
John Henningsgaard
received $2,000 to produce a professionally recorded collection of his original music. (Beltrami County)
Caige Jambor
was awarded $1,078 to purchase equipment to compose, record, produce, and perform a full-length album of original music. (Beltrami County).
Tawnee Corning
received $1,446 to purchase supplies to create a series of seven oil paintings for exhibition on the topic of existential psychoanalysis. (Clearwater County).
Jeremy Simonson
was awarded $2,000 to purchase a wide-angle lens and a printer to create photographic prints. (Hubbard County).
Cate Belleveau
was awarded $434 to support the filming of her original play Mary 3 Martha 4 NO Footnotes by local filmmaker/photographer Jon Heller (Beltrami County).

Cultural Traditions in the Arts Grants Awarded
On January 22, 2018 the Region 2 Arts Council Board of Directors awarded $6,000 through their
Cultural Traditions in the Arts Grant Program
, designed to
support high-quality arts programming for Minnesotans of all ages to access diverse cultural traditions through the arts.
The grant recipients

Headwaters Music & Arts was awarded $3,000 to hold a five-day fiddle camp in June 2018, with a special focus on the music of participants' North American heritage and the
Scottish/English/Irish/Appalachian
roots of folk and Bluegrass music, including a special introduction to contra dancing.
Red Lake Nation College received $3,000 to
host an interactive activity in which the public, Ojibwe language educators, and local metal sculpture artists will collaborate to create sculptures of two clans, Bear and Kingfisher, during the first World Anishinaabe Language Summit in the summer of 2018.

These funds are made available through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund passed by Minnesota voters on November 4, 2008.

This annual exhibition features new work by the 2016 McKnight Artist Fellowship for Ceramic Artists recipients Nicolas Darcourt (Minnetonka, Minnesota) and Sheryl McRoberts (Plymouth, Minnesota), as well as 2015 McKnight Artist Residency for Ceramic Artists recipients Kathryn Finnerty (Oregon), Lung-Chieh Lin (Taiwan), Helen Otterson (Kentucky), and Joseph Pintz (Missouri). This exhibition, supported by the McKnight Foundation, showcases the success of each artist's fellowship or residency.

Using Alcohol Inks can be a fun way to use colors and create backgrounds for stamping or card making. Alcohol Inks are an acid-free, highly pigmented, and fast drying medium to be used on non-porous surfaces.
This is a class for beginners or intermediate students. No brushes or previous experience needed. You do not need to be an artist to take part in this class.

Betty Rossi Memorial Fund
The Region 2 Arts Council would like to recognize the Memorial Fund of Betty Rossi, a previous editor of Loonfeather Press. Thanks to her friends' and families' donations to Region 2 Arts Council, we were able to hold a free writing workshop in Park Rapids, featuring local author Will Weaver. There were 18 participants, and a wonderful, creative time was had by all.

Bemidji Play is New York City Bound
Cate Belleveau wrote a play about Bemidji-born Mary Welsh Hemingway and the other women in Ernest Hemingway's life. Titled, Mary 4 Martha 3- NO Footnotes, it was selected to be part of a NYC Theater Fest called NY Summerfest at the Hudson Theater in midtown Manhattan in late August.

Teaching Artist Roster
The Region 2 Arts Council is facilitating the creation of a Teaching Artist Roster in service of artists who are interested in arts instruction opportunities and to support organizations and schools that are seeking artists for that purpose.
The Teaching Artist Roster is a tool to connect artists with schools and organizations. It is not an endorsement of the teaching qualifications of the artist or the suitability of an artist to meet the specific needs of an organization or school. Region 2 Arts Council recommends that artists be paid a minimum of $300 per four teaching hours; however, R2AC is not responsible for any aspect of the agreements made between organizations, schools, and artists.
