February is the month of candy hearts and flowers, Moon Pies and Mardi Gras beads.  It's also the month for football championships, groundhog predictions and a day off to celebrate our Presidents.   But February is also a month of remembering.  We've officially celebrated Black History Month during February since the year of the bicentennial, 1976.  I vividly remember seeing a poster hanging in the cafeteria of Brentwood Elementary School and recognizing a few of the faces staring back at me.  I had seen them on TV, mostly playing sports or a role in a movie.  But, I definitely remember looking at the faces of those I didn't know and wondering why they were so important that they made it to a poster.  As a young girl of 10, my assumption was that if you were famous, you were either a sports figure, a singer or an actor.  It never occurred to me that recognition could be given to those who had been poets, or scientists or catalysts for change in our country.  I remember when I began to learn about those unfamiliar faces; their names, their stories, their struggles, their victories.  I think it was then that I began to understand the divide between cultures, between what other families talked about at dinner and who we looked up to as heroes.  It was then that I also learned about the different roles we all played in the history of our nation.  Even as a young girl, I understood.  The divide I was learning about has, at times, seemed unbridgeable.  Those faces on that poster refused to accept that divide.

This month we also celebrate our PTA Founders, Phoebe, Alice and Selena.  Each of them played a significant role in bringing us to where we are today.  Over 120 years ago, when our Founders decided to inform and educate others about the dangers and crises that were impacting their children, they urged them to take a stand and ensure that protections were put into place to prevent any more children from dying.  It appears that their work is not done.  It is now our turn to take up that calling.  Every day, whether they recognize us or not, we are seen by a child who needs our help.  Every day we have an opportunity to be their hero.  We have a chance to bring hope to a situation where there may be none.  We have our shot to bridge the divide between hurting and healing.  Our names or faces may not ever grace a poster, but those who came before us didn't worry about acknowledgement or notoriety.  They just wanted to take a stand for what is right.

February is our time to remember the journey, to educate ourselves to the stories in our community and to take that stand so that ALL children will have a safe, healthy and prosperous life.  I hope we continue to remember, long after the candy and the beads have disappeared.

Do You Know A Hero?
Do you know someone in your school or county that has been a hero to their community?  Have they given of their time to help provide food, clothing or shelter to those in need?  Do they reach beyond the walls of the school and look for ways that they can give back?

If the answer is YES, please send me their story!  I'd like to recognize a few of our HEROES during this year's Leadership Convention.  Feel free to include pics!

If you submit their information as a surprise to them, please let me know that in your email.  I look forward to reading some incredible stories!!

 Leadership Convention - July 12-15, 2018
Leadership Convention is coming...
Leadership Convention is coming...

What does that mean you ask??  Well I am glad you did! Leadership Convention is our annual event for all local unit leaders and members to learn more about PTA.  It is a time for networking, collaboration and learning.  It is an experience that even the most seasoned PTA leader finds valuable.  With over 80 workshops to choose from, there is something for everyone to enhance their PTA knowledge.   With workshops, elections, county council gatherings, PTA's Got Talent, General Meetings, policy discussions, exhibitors there to share their information and products and more, there is definitely something for everyone!

Your next question might be, who can attend?  That is easy...any PTA member!  Members can pay for themselves to attend or better yet, it is an approved and encouraged expense for local unit and county council budgets.

What can PTA/PTSA's be doing now to get ready...that is another great question!   You can start by reviewing your budgets.  Verify there are funds available to attend.  If funds are available, review your policies and procedures and/or standing rules and apply the process to decide who can attend.  If funds are not available, ask these questions, do we need to make a budget amendment to allot the proper monies to attend?  Do we have the funds available to make a budget amendment? Not sure what to do...no worries, ask us!  We are here to assist you with these questions and more.

Average Expense for 4 attendees = $1800.00 /  An Average of 500 hours of Learning PTA Best Practices and Networking Opportunities = A  PRICELE$$  cost of preparing for a SUCCESSFUL and POWERFUL school year as a strong PTA/PTSA!

REGISTRATION WILL OPEN MARCH 1ST!

 Leadership

Happy February! It sure seems like this school year is flying by. As we approach some of our busiest PTA times, it is also a good time to stop and think of the future for our PTA.  It is important to take a minute to stop and reflect.  What worked for us and what didn't?  How can we improve (as there is always room for improvement)?  Were we as inclusive as we could have been and if not, how do we ensure we are in the future? Have we elected our Nominating Committee? Can we start to mentor people so we are set up for future success? Having shared knowledge means having a larger pool for the nominating committee to select a new slate of officers. Have we taken the time to learn something new? Even during our busiest of times, there should always be time to learn something new.  Have we owned our mistakes and learned from them?  How and what can we do to show we learned from them?  Have we thanked our team for their hard work?  A thank you goes a long way!  With that being said...THANK YOU!  Thank you for all that you do for ALL CHILDREN!

Leadership grows from within and reflection is sometimes a difficult yet needed tool for growth.  These characteristics are signs of good leadership.  Sometimes we do not set out to be a leader...but our passion guides us there.  Thank you for being a leader.  Remember, your leaders are here for you and ready to assist when you need us!

Congratulations! We have completed the "4 ways to Define Leadership" b y Sammi Caramela, B2B Staff Writer September 21, 2017 11:20 am EST.   Here are some final thoughts on what leadership is today:

Leadership is critical to every company. Workers need someone to look to, learn from and thrive with.  Every leader has their own style and strategy. Further, leadership styles and methods vary because of outside influences and personal challenges.

While leadership is unique to everyone, there are some common ways to define the term. Peter Economy, also known as "The Leadership Guy," listed the qualities of today's best leadership in an Inc.com article. According to Economy, leadership embodies:

Decisiveness Awareness Focus Accountability
Empathy
Confidence
Optimism Honesty Inspiration

 Teen Dating Violence Awareness
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.  Just typing those words makes me sad. No teen, actually no person, should ever be afraid of their partner yet one in three teens in the U.S. will experience physical, sexual or emotional abuse by someone they are in a relationship with before they become adults.
