The Changing Energy Picture: Where Do You Fit In?
Tuesday, May 15, 2018
12:00 - 1:00 pm
East Hill Office Building
Training Room #140
Changes are happening! There are some changes currently happening in
the way our energy is produced, distributed, and used in our homes and other buildings. These changes bring both opportunities and challenges for you and your family to reduce your energy use, support the switch to renewable sources, spend less money on utilities, and be more comfortable in your home.
Come find out what’s going on and what this means for you and your home. Leave with more information about the new energy landscape, the electric grid, how you are using energy, smart meters, and tips to reduce your energy use.
This brief workshop, led by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County, is informative and interactive. We hope you will join us!
Anne Rhodes is an Energy Educator working with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County. She is working with homeowners and renters to help them reduce their energy use in their homes. She also helps people understand the options and incentives available for taking advantage of renewable energy systems, including solar panels, community solar, solar water heaters, and heat pumps for heating homes and water.

Downsizing & Decluttering
Thursday, May 10, 2018
12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
East Hill Office Building
Training Room #140
Are you experiencing significant stress caused by the need to downsize and/or declutter? If so, this workshop is for you! Join us, as professional organizer and small business owner Linda Story, walks us through strategies to address these life challenges.
Linda decided to become a professional organizer following her 2003 move to Ithaca. This eleventh relocation heightened her enthusiasm for managing life’s transitions well. Retirement, downsizing, moving, or a change in health or relationships—all can be better met using strategic planning, smart practices and the support of a knowledgeable and neutral ally.
An educator for twelve years, a writer and photojournalist for thirteen years, Linda launched Clear the Way Organizing, LLC in 2005. Her specialties include coaching best practices for downsizing for a move, clutter clearing, implementing individualized time management and To Do systems, and maximizing the usefulness of one’s gifts of time and living spaces.
A member of the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals, and NAPO's Golden Circle, Linda wrote the monthly "Get Organized” article for the Ithaca Journal for seven years, in addition to Clear the Way Organizing’s periodic newsletter.
She and her husband enjoy visiting their four children and their spouses, located from Alaska to Portugal. Their avocations include travel, photography, curiosity-fueled explorations, kayaking, and occasionally, gardening.

Retiree Reflections is dedicated to sharing retiree experiences within our community.
|
|
Funny, I retired from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County in 2008. However, 9 years later, after many trials and tribulations, I found myself needing more income.
I tried working as a gardener in Lake George Village but it was grueling work often kneeling for hours on end. So the possibility of working in an office where the kneeling, heat and sun wouldn’t be wearing me out was appealing.
A friend at Cornell texted me about a vacant position and would I like to apply. Since I was in the Master Gardener program and occasionally visited the office, I was comfortable with the possibility of returning to a job where I was familiar with the work and employees. Well I applied and luckily was rehired.
I appreciate the role Cornell Cooperative Extension plays in the community. We educate people with nutritional, parenting, and energy programs. Most importantly, the 4-H program which teaches children how to work and learn together. The youth fair has a Teen Superintendent program which gives them training in how to get job experience before they are employed. The Public Presentation program helps them for when they need to apply for a job. It strengthens their ability to speak to potential employers and to be comfortable in presenting their views to others.
In addition to my administrative career, I am an artist. During the time off between retiring and going back to work I was able to take many workshops in watercolor and pastel which has helped me to develop better skills. Art was a hobby but I hope in my next retirement I will be able to use it as a source of income.

The Ballad of Holland Island House
by Cornell alum Lynn Tomlinson '88
Wednesday, May 2 at 9:25pm
Thursday, May 3 at 7pm
Willard Straight Theatre
Directed by Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman
with Douglas Booth, Jerome Flynn, Robert Gulaczyk
A different sort of animated film,
Loving Vincent
uses 130 of artist Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and the models in them to create its narrative. “Its 65,000 frames were rendered with oil paints by more than 100 artists to create a living, breathing canvas. Set a year after his death, the story is a murder-mystery as Armand Roulin, a regular sitter for van Gogh, investigates the final days of the painter.” (
Total Film
) Nominated for Best Animated Feature Oscar. Shown with the short animated film
The Ballad of Holland Island House
(2015, 5 min), directed and animated by
Lynn Tomlinson ’88
. Animated clay paintings tell the true story of the last house on a sinking island in the Chesapeake Bay, a large and important estuary and waterway in Maryland, on the East Coast of the United States. In an Old-Time Music ballad, the house sings of its life and the creatures it has sheltered during its lifetime journey from tree, to timber, to home, to an ultimate return to nature. It contemplates time, environmental change, and the rise of the seas. The film includes a reference to Van Gogh's painting “The Potato Eaters.” Tomlinson used to teach an animation class at Cornell.
RBG
Tuesday, May 8 at 7:15pm
Willard Straight Theatre
Directed by Julie Cohen & Betsy West
with Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Gloria Steinem, Nina Totenberg
Cornell Cinema is thrilled to present the Ithaca premiere of this inspiring portrait of Supreme Court Justice and Cornell alum Ruth Bader Ginsberg ’54. “Ginsburg’s life—and its many lessons, both learned and taught—come to entertaining and energetic life” (Indiewire) in this new documentary that bowed at the Sundance Film Festival in January. “
RBG
serves as a compelling Ginsburg primer, and West and Cohen are understandably interested in driving home just how fully she fought back sexism at every stage of her professional life, from her experience at Harvard Law to her first steps into full-time work to her Supreme Court appointment.” (Indiewire)

Monday Night Seminar -
How Australia's Birds Populated the World
May 7, 7:30 p.m.
Cornell Lab of Ornithology auditorium
According to Australian author and biologist Tim Low, Australian mammals have long cast a shadow over something of equal distinction, the birds. If we accept that birds produce song, the world’s first songs were sung in Australian rainforests tens of millions of years ago, by birds related to the lyrebird. This means that all of America’s warblers, jays, sparrows, chickadees and so forth have Australian ancestors. Hear more about this fascinating story of evolution based on Tim’s best-selling book,
Where Song Began
. The book will be available for purchase and signing.
This seminar is being streamed live
