NEWS AND OPPORTUNITIES

March Webinar: The Change in Mind Initiative

Join us on Thursday, March 8, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET to learn about the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities' two-year brain science initiative, Change in Mind , including lessons learned and specific examples from a 15-site cohort. Discover how Change in Mind 's developmental evaluation approach, rapid testing of program and practice innovations and rigorous application of multilevel theories of change have accelerated our understanding of where policies and practices at various levels need to shift for true alignment with advances in neurosciences. Hear from Change in Mind site Children's Hospital of Wisconsin on its efforts to integrate brain science research into their child welfare work, and how the Strengthening Families framework complemented its science-aligned strategies. We will also hear updates from the Center for the Study of Social Policy and the National Alliance of Children's Trust and Prevention Funds about new resources and opportunities.  Register now to join us on March 8.

As always, feel free to invite partners and colleagues to join the webinar. And mark your calendars for upcoming webinars, also from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, on April 12, May 10 and June 14.

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES ON THE GROUND

Engaging the Community with a "5 Factors 5K Walk and Run"

On April 14, community members will run, walk and push strollers along a five-kilometer course in Raleigh, NC - and learn about protective factors along the way.  Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina (PCANC) is partnering with Wake County prevention partners to hold their first-ever 5 Factors 5K Walk and Run to engage community members and business leaders in child abuse and neglect prevention month. Signs along the race course will explain the Strengthening Families protective factors and everyday actions people can take to support families in their community. Businesses are signing up to sponsor the run with a focus on a particular protective factor. For example, a local health insurance company will be the "concrete support in times of need" sponsor. Funds raised will go into PCANC's Five Factors Fund, which provides support for its statewide social norms messaging campaign as well as technical assistance for local stakeholders to develop prevention plans at the community or county level built around the Strengthening Families Protective Factors Framework.

With signs of spring in the air, and child abuse and neglect prevention month coming up, how can you get residents and leaders outside, active and engaged in making your community a place where families can thrive? Join the conversation in the Strengthening Families National Network group on Facebook to share your ideas.

FROM THE TOOLBOX

Protective Factors and Substance Abuse and Recovery

In 2016, the
Birth Parent National Network , convened by the National Alliance of Children's Trust and Prevention Funds, released "What Parents Say About Using the Protective Factors to Understand Substance Abuse and Recovery" and a companion brief, " What Parents Say About What Works in Substance Abuse Recovery ." As many communities grapple with rising rates of substance abuse, these resources shine a light on how a strengths-based approach can help parents recover from substance abuse disorders and transform their parenting. The voices of parents with lived experience are critical to finding solutions to these challenges.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT...

February Strengthening Families Networking Webinar Available Now

Our February webinar focused on " Child Maltreatment Prevention: A Planning Framework for Action ," a new toolkit from the Child Abuse and Neglect Technical Assistance and Strategic Dissemination Center (CANTASD). The toolkit provides a comprehensive guide to prevention planning at state and local levels. It builds on tools developed and piloted in a partnership between Chapin Hall's noted child abuse and neglect prevention researcher Deborah Daro and the states of South Carolina and Colorado, and draws from a broad range of national work on planning for child and family services. Nilofer Ahsan shared how the framework can support your prevention planning work and how you can engage in an ongoing process to continue to adapt and develop the tools in the toolkit based on the needs and priorities of your state or community. Access the slides and a recording of the webinar here
