Dr. Janet Robishaw Appointed Senior Associate Dean for Research

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Janet Robishaw has been appointed Senior Associate Dean for Research for the College of Medicine. Dr. Robishaw, Chair and Professor of Biomedical Science, has been serving as Interim Senior Associate Dean for Research for the last year.

Since arriving in September 2016, Dr. Robishaw has led key research initiatives for the college: renovations to the research infrastructure, including enhancements in laboratories and shared facilities and the development of a student research training center. Dr. Robishaw has also been responsible for identifying and recruiting top research faculty. To foster research opportunities, new graduate programs and courses are being launched, along with research awards for students and faculty, including summer stipends. Dr. Robishaw holds multiple RO1 grants for her research on Opioid Addiction, Sleep Apnea, G-olf signaling, and G-protein-coupled receptors. Dementia Prevention Clinic Opens on Boca Raton Campus

Dr. Galvin walks a patient through the strength assessment procedure.
Alzheimer's disease and related disorders affect more than 7 million Americans, and an additional 120 million others over the age of 50 are at risk for developing some type of cognitive impairment.  Recently opened on the FAU Boca Raton campus, The Dementia Prevention Clinic, part of the Comprehensive Center for Brain Health, provides assessment and comprehensive customized plans to help mitigate risk factors for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative disorders. "While we  cannot cure Alzheimer's disease and related disorders, there is increasing evidence the risk of disease is potentially modifiable," explained James Galvin M.D., M.P.H., founding director of the Comprehensive Center for Brain Health.
First Fellowship in Cardiology

Just in time for American Heart Month, the College of Medicine has received initial accreditation from the national Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for its first University-sponsored fellowship. The FAU Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship will be based at Tenet HealthCare system's  Delray Medical Center, a member of the Graduate Medical Education Consortium. The Fellowship is a sub-specialty of internal medicine and complements existing  residency programs, i.e., internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine, psychiatry, and neurology. The three-year program launches in July and will include two fellows per year for a total of six fellows.

To address the national shortage in STEM (science-technology-engineering and math) career-oriented students, the Florida Atlantic University Brain Institute has received a $780,000 grant from the Stiles-Nicholson Foundation to launch an innovative program targeted at middle and high school students in Palm Beach County. ASCEND ( Advancing STEM: Community Engagement through Neuroscience Discovery) will tap the energy and intellect of undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral neuroscience trainees associated with FAU Brain Institute labs, the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, the Scripps Research Institute, and the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience to excite and inspire future neuroscientists.

Full LCME Accreditation Site Visit is scheduled for February 16-19, 2020

Although the LCME site visit may seem like it's far into the future, substantial preparation will be required in the coming months.  To coordinate this effort, communications will be sent in May regarding committee development and an LCME "kick off" event to organize the substantial groundwork required to meet LCME standards.  We will be counting on members of our College of Medicine community to serve in a variety of capacities, ranging from committee service to direct face-to-face meetings with the LCME Site Visit Team.

The College of Medicine LCME Accreditation Team (A-Team), led by Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Mark Di Corcia, Ph.D., O.T.R., will consist of Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, Dr. Sarah Wood, M.D., and Academic Affairs Specialist, Kadeja Henry, M.P.A. The A-Team will undertake the preparations for the college's accreditation survey visit and has already begun work on this important mission.

Dr. Di Corcia is serving as an LCME Fellow and will serve on the LCME Site Visit Team at another medical school from March 4 - 7, 2018. This experience will provide him with firsthand experience on the preparation of site visit materials. Additionally, Drs. Di Corcia and Wood, and Ms. Henry will attend an LCME site visit preparation workshop held by the AAMC in Washington, D.C. on April 24, 2018 to further prepare for the college's accreditation site visit.
In recognition of Dr. DiCorcia's leadership role in the LCME preparation and for his increasing role in a variety of UME activities, he has been invited to serve as the Assistant Dean for Medical Education and will also continue his duties as Assistant Dean in Academic Affairs. Please join us in congratulating Dr. DiCorcia on this new role.
Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Inductees

This month, eleven students from the College of Medicine were inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (AOA), a national medical honor society advocating for excellence in scholarship and the highest ideals in the profession of medicine.  The AOA induction banquet, hosted at the FAU Faculty Club, was attended by Dean Phillip Boiselle, M.D., the inductees, and AOA faculty members from FAU's AOA selection committee. This year, in a special moment, AOA and affiliate faculty member, Dr. Donald Heiman, inducted his son, Joshua Heiman. The keynote speaker, Dr. Richard Greenwald, poignantly spoke about "excellence" and the FAU AOA councilor, Dr. Michelle Schwartz, congratulated the inductees, encouraging them to maintain their passion for medicine because passion promotes excellence and AOA's guiding principles.

New Signage at the Clinical Skills Simulation Center

The new FAU Medicine signs have been installed at the Clinical Skills Simulation Center in the Research Park on the Boca Raton campus and represent the first outward facing presence for FAU Medicine. These signs are highly visible from Spanish River Road, and from the new exit for I-95 both during the day and at night. The new signage marks the beginning of a visibility campaign for the College of Medicine to increase the community's awareness of FAU's medical school.

Call to Heart Ball - Caridad Center

Last month, the College of Medicine sponsored a table at the 2018 Call to Heart Ball to benefit the Caridad Center's mission of ensuring that the poor, uninsured and under-served individuals, and families in Palm Beach County receive access to healthcare, education, and outreach programs. Our students and faculty regularly volunteer their time and are among the 400 medical and educational professionals who volunteer at the Caridad Center.

Faculty Publications

Congratulations to Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education, and Faculty and Academic Affairs,  Dr. Roger Smith for his recent publication of yet another book in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology. His latest title, Dysmenorrhea and Menorrhagia: A Clinician's Guide addresses the pathophysiologic underpinnings of both dysmenorrhea and menorrhagia and provides clinicians with practical approaches to establishing the diagnosis, proven tactics for successful therapeutic interventions, strategies for dealing with the challenging atypical case, and practical tools for patient education and counseling. It teaches principles, including the role prostaglandins play in both conditions, and summarizes evidence on the effectiveness of medical options, surgical procedures and other treatments for these disorders.
