October City of Missoula Public Art Committee happenings in Missoula, Montana

News & Updates
2018 TSB's & Montana Rail Link Finalists

Happy Fall! Missoula Public Art has been busy with lots of activity these days. We are so thrilled to have such wonderful projects to work on as a committee and to be able to provide opportunities for local and regional artists. Firstly, this October, five Traffic Signal Boxes were painted or wrapped. Our artists braved brutal weather conditions including cold temperatures, wind and rain to get their artwork finished. Four of the boxes are brand new designs that were commissioned through our selection committee. The fifth box was actually a re-creation of an older Traffic Signal Box that was taken down years ago by the Department of Transportation and replaced with a new, blank box. Thankfully, this year Greg Siple, the artist of, "Biking to Missoula" was able to re-do his signal box for everyone to enjoy once again. If you have not yet had an opportunity to view the work, new boxes are located at: Higgins & Pine, Broadway & Higgins, Orange & Spruce, Higgins & Spruce and Broadway & Orange.

Secondly, the Public Art Committee is hard at work on the Montana Rail Link (MRL) Percent for Art Project. The Committee received a great deal of submissions for our MRL Percent for Art, Call to Artists. The selection committee has now narrowed the pool down to four amazingly talented finalists who will be interviewed by a selection committee come November. The Committee will then select a single artist to commission the work for the MRL park. Everyone is welcome to attend selection committee and interview meetings. The Montana Rail Link park is slated to open in Spring of 2019 with a Missoula Public Art piece to be installed in Summer 2019.
