Quality Outcomes: Real-World Connections

An illustration of three people-shaped icons connected by a circle. Below them are the words Make Real-World Connections
In our district, we help students connect what they learn in the classroom with how it applies in the real world. The benefit: Our students gain a deeper understanding of concepts, more insight into career possibilities, and a richer understanding of their ability to take ownership of the future.

It is one of the many ways we are preparing our students to pursue the career paths of their choice. Discover more in our 2016-17 Quality Profile

Congratulations to Thespian Troupe 112, which performed "The Door" at the state conference March 23-25 at Northmont High School. A big shout-out goes to those who competed in individual events: Emmy Goerling, who received an Excellent rating in Costume Construction; Amaya Jones, who scored an Excellent rating for Musical Theatre Solo Dance; and Bri Gallagher, who competed in Acting and received feedback from theatre professors and performers from across Ohio. Bravo!

Students, service dogs benefit from quality time together

Students in Mrs. Bissett's and Mrs. Brown's room are enjoying their biweekly visits with "puppies-in-training" Bixby and Tweety from 4 Paws for Ability. These beautiful pups hope to become full-service dogs! 4 Paws for Ability is a nonprofit organization that places service dogs with children with disabilities and veterans who have lost the use of limbs or their hearing.

Positive messages remind students to believe in themselves

Ohio State Achievement tests began for all Weisenborn students on April 10. This can be a stressful time, so Weisenborn's teachers provided students with positive messages to keep their Warrior spirits high! All eighth-grade students received wristbands; seventh graders received Weisenborn lanyards. Staff even left positive messages written on students' desks! Ohio State Achievement testing continues until the end of April.

Charles H. Huber Elementary
Charles Huber students are stuck on reading

Last month, Charles Huber students were given a reading challenge as part of Read Across America. For every 100 minutes read at home, students and staff received a piece of tape. The Charles Huber community read more than 60,000 minutes! On March 16, they got to tape music teacher Mr. Hesselbart and student Bridget Burke (who read 800 minutes on her own) to the wall! Way to go!

Monticello Elementary
Visit from the Wizard teaches importance about sunscreen

Recent weather aside, summer is on the way -- along with increased danger from ultraviolet (UV) rays. But Monticello's second graders will be ready thanks to a recent visit from Jason the Wizard from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Jason presented a lesson on the impact and dangers of UV rays and the need for sunscreen. The students also made bracelets using a special UV light that caused the beads to change color, representing the need for sunscreen. What a great real-world science lesson that will benefit students for the rest of their lives!

Students transform cubes into robots

Jason the Wizard also taught second graders how to create robots from a set of Cubelets, which are magnetic blocks that can be snapped together to create robots. The robots were so amazing; they even moved! The students enjoyed manipulating the cubes into different patterns and shapes while learning about logical thinking, patterns, and sequencing.

Rushmore Elementary
Rushmore welcomes the Wayne Band

It was standing room only at Rushmore Elementary on April 5 when the Wayne High School band and the Warriorettes delighted students by performing songs and routines. The Rushmore family looks forward to this performance each year as many former Rushmore students return to visit!

Valley Forge Elementary
Valley Forge fifth graders team up with first graders to teach peer mediation

The students in Mrs. Ignet's fifth grade and Mrs. Back's first grade classes have teamed up to learn about peer mediation and dealing with their feelings appropriately. The first graders have been journaling about a variety of topics that they share with the fifth graders, who help them determine what emotions they are experiencing and how to deal with anything negative. Eventually, the fifth graders will begin to help their first grade buddies with conflict resolution. The goal is for these students to assist with developing a building-wide peer mediation program.

Students collect more than $2,000 for leukemia and lymphoma research

Valley Forge Elementary participated in a "Pennies for Patients" fundraising event for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during March. The student body did an excellent job raising funds and bringing awareness to this great cause. Over the course of three weeks, the school collected $2,388! Great job, Patriots!

SOAR students win grant for 3D printers

Sixth-grade SOAR students have been busy exploring the use of their two new 3D printers that were purchased with a grant from the Air Force Association. Students have moved from passive consumers to active creators by learning how to use 3D software and take their designs to the next level. Using 3D printers in the classroom in conjunction with the Engineering Design Process has enabled students to problem solve, conceptualize, and visualize designs through the stages of development, from sketch to final product.

Students mummify chickens in study on ancient civilizations

Sixth grade students recently studied the art and ritual of mummification by mummifying chickens! The hands-on lesson was part of their study of ancient civilizations in the Middle East. While the ancient Egyptian process took about 70 days, students mummified their chickens in approximately 45 days. They had to clean the chickens, dry them, and then clean them again with alcohol. They then covered the chickens with a mixture of baking soda and salt to dry out the body. They have to repeat this process every 10 days, during which they have taken note of how the skin has changed and the chicken bodies have flattened. Some mummy chickens even look slightly deformed as they shrink!

Two girls smile at the camera. One of them is wearing latex gloves. She holds a cleaned chicken in one hand and a paper towel in the other hand.

Studebaker
Studebaker celebrates grandparents

On April 13, preschoolers came to school with their grandparents! During the visit, the preschoolers and their grandparents participated in fun activities such as making art, singing songs, and playing games. The preschoolers and their grandparents enjoyed snack time and posing for pictures together. More than 160 grandparents came to visit! Wow!
