We have a lot of news to share! In this update, we welcome a new faculty fellow, share news about a recent promotion, highlight some exciting technology transfer activity, and share more of the innovative work being done by our team. We also announce the recipients of our second annual internal grants program, as well as the recipients of our new grants program for student researchers.

I-SENSE Welcomes New Team Member
 Jordo
n Beckler, Ph.D., an assistant professor at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, is jointly appointed as an I-SENSE faculty fellow. A Gulf Research Program Early Career Fellow with the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, Beckler is directing Harbor Branch's Geochemistry and Geochemical Sensing Lab. Previously, he served as a staff scientist and program manager of the Ocean Technology Research Program at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, and a courtesy faculty member at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee

Team Member Receives Promotion
We are excited to announce that Jianan Zhai, Ph.D., has been promoted to assistant research professor in I-SENSE. He will also continue in his role as chief engineer.
"Dr. Zhai has been instrumental in building Florida Atlantic University's Sensing and Smart Systems Pillar. We are excited for him to begin his independent research career, and for him to continue in his role leading our engineering core," said

Developing Solutions to Collect Private Data
A $74,000 Florida Center for Cybersecurity Collaborative Seed Award will enable Reza Azarderakhsh to develop solutions for the collection of private data to make it mathematically impossible to violate users' privacy without relying on any trusted authority in the post-quantum era.

I-SENSE Announces Internal Grants Recipients
Through the Division of Research, we are pleased to announce the recipients of our second annual internal grants program, as part of a new initiative to stimulate external research funding. We sought proposals to grow multidisciplinary collaborations that lead to externally funded research programs in the Sensing and Smart Systems pillar.

I-SENSE Announces Internal Student Awards
Through the Division of Research, I-SENSE recently launched a funding program to support collaborative student research projects. We sought proposals from student teams to engage in multidisciplinary efforts that have the potential for significant societal impact.
Successful teams were awarded funds for materials, supplies, software license and other services to support their projects. The awardees will conduct their projects in the Sensing and Smart Systems Innovation Laboratory, with access to all available facilities.

Faculty Fellow Speaks at WiDS Conference
Behnaz Ghoraani, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, was invited to speak at the Global Women in Data Science Conference on March 5. The annual conference is held at Stanford University and at more than 100 locations worldwide. Ghoraani, an I-SENSE faculty fellow, spoke in Miami.
