April 2018
Friends and Colleagues,

Greetings from the Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network Systems Engineering (I-SENSE).

We have a lot of news to share! In this update, we welcome a new faculty fellow, share news about a recent promotion, highlight some exciting technology transfer activity, and share more of the innovative work being done by our team. We also announce the recipients of our second annual internal grants program, as well as the recipients of our new grants program for student researchers.

As always, if you're working in Sensing and Smart Systems or the Internet of Things, we'd love to hear from you. Reach out to us by email, drop by for a visit, or help us welcome a distinguished visitor as part of the Pillar Seminar Series.

FAU is building the future of Sensing and Smart Systems. We invite you to build it with us.

Best,

Jason Hallstrom

I-SENSE Welcomes New Team Member
Jordo n Beckler, Ph.D., an assistant professor at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, is jointly appointed as an I-SENSE faculty fellow. A Gulf Research Program Early Career Fellow with the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, Beckler is directing Harbor Branch's Geochemistry and Geochemical Sensing Lab. Previously, he served as a staff scientist and program manager of the Ocean Technology Research Program at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, and a courtesy faculty member at the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee  ...  read more .
Team Member Receives Promotion
We are excited to announce that Jianan Zhai, Ph.D., has been promoted to assistant research professor in I-SENSE. He will also continue in his role as chief engineer.

"Dr. Zhai has been instrumental in building Florida Atlantic University's Sensing and Smart Systems Pillar. We are excited for him to begin his independent research career, and for him to continue in his role leading our engineering core," said
I-SENSE Director Jason Hallstrom.

Faculty Fellow Receives Two Awards
Small Business Innovation and Research
An I-SENSE Faculty Fellow recently received a $ 225,000 NSF SBIR award to commercialize research in the area of modern post-quantum cryptography in embedded devices.
Reza Azarderakhsh, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Computer and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is the founder of PQSecure Technologiesa startup at FAU Tech Runway .

Developing Solutions to Collect Private Data
A $74,000 Florida Center for Cybersecurity Collaborative Seed Award will enable Reza Azarderakhsh to develop solutions for the collection of private data to make it mathematically impossible to violate users' privacy without relying on any trusted authority in the post-quantum era.  READ MORE.
