A panel of Luther College faculty and staff are hosting a roundtable discussion about their experiences with failure and the growth that can come from hardship. The panel's discussion begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall.Following the event, a reception will be held in Qualley Lounge.

Luther's Anthropology Club is pleased to have anthropologist Martha Rees as a guest speaker on Monday, March 18. In her talk entitled “Oaxaca, Mexico: Ecologies and Histories”, Martha will explore Oaxaca through topics such as diversity of ecology, languages and cultures, women and immigrant health and safety, and migration. The short, informal talk will begin at 4:30 in Koren 217. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to come.

Luther College presents Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' "Appropriate," a story of siblings colliding over a contentious family history while settling the accounts of the newly-dead Lafayette patriarch. Performances take place in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 15; 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16; 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16; and at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 17.

Igor Kalnin , Luther College assistant professor of music will give a recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 16 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Kalnin will perform on the violin in a chamber ensemble Duo MemDi.

The 2019 Sihler Memorial Lecture features guest speaker Deborah Smith Pollard, University of Michigan-Dearborn Professor of English Literature and Humanities. Focusing on performances of the gospel music standard "O Happy Day" by female performers, the lecture commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Black Student Union at Luther College, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life

Krahn Family Student Life Service Award Nominations for this award must be current Sophomore and Junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Any student, faculty, or staff member may nominate a student. This award is designed to recognize a student who makes a positive impact to student life. The $1,000 award is expected to be over and above any financial assistance a student receives. The nomination form can be found here . Nominations due by April 12.
 
Kuh Family "Positively Luther" Award This award is given each year to a student whose character, leadership, and participation in co-curricular and other educationally purposeful activities enhance the quality of campus life. The recipient must be in good academic standing with a demonstrated need for financial assistance. This $5,000 award is expected to be over and above the financial aid package offered by the College. Students may apply for this award through April 12.

SAC Cinema presents Greenbook : " A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South." (IMDB.com) Movie is Friday, March 15th. 7pm doors open and 7:30pm movie starts, Valders 206, and free with CAF and $5 without. Free popcorn while supplies last!

Closing events for the BSU 50th Anniversary will be held April 26-28. The weekend celebration kicks off with a reception at Norby House at 5:30 p.m. Friday, and closes with a Gala Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. More information on these and additional activities can be found online . With the exception of the Gala Dinner, the weekend’s events are open to all with no charge for admission. This year’s Student Research Symposium and Senior Recognition Convocation will be held on Friday, May 10. Submissions for student abstracts are due Friday, March 22. Students are encouraged to share their research and creative work by applying online:  Application and abstract form.

Platform , a student organization devoted to promoting young women and other under-heard voices within policy and politics, is hosting Jen, the founder of Platform's National organization for an Advocacy Workshop on Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. in Olin 102. You don't have to be an expert in politics to change policy or an expert in lobbying to change minds. During the workshop, we will learn how to craft a narrative around the realities we live and tell our stories in a way that will make legislators listen. .

'Here's My Story: I Failed' March 13 -- Failing isn't on anyone's to-do list, but what if more emphasis was placed on failure as a productive learning tool? New York Times Best Selling Author Brené Brown reminds us that if we are brave enough, often enough, we will fail, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Come hear faculty and staff tell their stories at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, in the CFL Recital Hall. Reception to follow. Sponsored by Counseling Services, Active Minds and CEPE.

Storm Bailey, professor of philosophy at Luther College has been appointed as The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement faculty research fellow. The appointment is for two years beginning in the fall of 2019.

Luther College junior Kristen Hansen and sophomore Piper Wood have been selected as Peace Scholars for the 2018-19 academic year. The pair will spend six weeks studying peace and dialogue in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.

Jim Martin-Schramm, Luther College professor of religion, has been announced as the new director of the Center for Sustainable Communities. He serves a three-year term as director beginning spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Zeta Tau Psi Soccer Tournament for Charity -- Saturday, March 16 Zeta Tau Psi will be hosting an indoor 5 on 5 soccer tournament. The games will start at 1 pm and run until 5 pm in the Regent's Center main gym. To join, contact [email protected] . Teams of 5-8 people will donate $20 ($4 a person) to join the tournament. All donations go towards the NGO Water To Thrive and support Decorah Middle School’s well building initiative.

Call for proposals:  Iowa College Foundation-McElroy Student/Faculty Research Projects for 2019-20. Students must be juniors or seniors in Fall 2019.  Applications require dual authorship by the student(s) and a sponsoring faculty member. Funds may be used to support all expenses of research project except faculty stipends. Maximum award: $2,000. Luther may submit up to four proposals. Internal deadline: April 10, to Dean's Office, Union 262.

Beta Theta Omega (BTQ) presents The 2019 Oscars Talent Show!   BTQ will be tabling to sell tickets from 5-7pm Monday through Friday outside Marty's. This year’s proceeds will go to the Agateka - Kw'ishure (Dignity at School) Program in Burundi. The show will take place @7pm on March 16 in Marty’s.Tickets will be sold for $3 and $5 at the door. For more information email  [email protected] .
