PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Dear Members and Friends,

This was our 40th year of helping adults from other countries to face the challenges of living in a new country. Our volunteers teach English skills one-on-one and also offer a bit of guidance in some of the quirks of our culture. Feedback from students and tutors alike tells us this is a needed service and worthy of our best efforts.

Our Holiday Luncheon this year was a buffet provided by the Literacy Council. We aimed to have the dishes ethnically diverse since we were not asking people to bring dishes from their own country this year.

Attendance was outstanding! There were 36 members and about 20 students. Rounding out the merriment were another 20 friends and children. Conversation was lively at all ten dining tables. Highlights of the day were the raffle prize of a $50 Macys card that went to one of the students and the arrival of Santa Claus with gifts for the children.

What a wonderful way to finish a rewarding year of volunteerism.

One of our new tutors, Isabel, has been contemplating a  "Language Exchange " program that we might want to develop. The idea is that two people who want to learn each other's language (Spanish and English for example) would get together regularly to exchange lessons. Someone experienced in language tutoring, could get the pair started, then they'd be off and running, so that our tutoring would have a multiplier effect.

She continues by cautioning that, as with many ideas, the devil is in the details. If anyone is interested in exploring this idea, she would like to discuss it further. SShe has explored various websites, such as mylanguageexchange.com, and has searched on terms such as language/exchange/pairs/matching/dyads. She has heard of it being tried in schools, but could never run down details. If you have any information or ideas about similar programs, email [email protected].

Hoping to see many of you at our Annual Meeting with light lunch, January 12 at 11:00.

Lucy Goodell
President
