Osteopathic Community Morns the loss of two leaders
It is with a heavy heart the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) shares the news of the passing of
Lawrence "Larry" Abramson, DO, MPH on December 26, 2017 and
Davie A. Kellam, DO, on January 9, 2018. Dr. Abramson was an extraordinary

force in the MOA, serving as a board of trustee, as well as

Dr. David A. Kellam
|
serving on a number of committees and being a mentor to aspiring leaders, physicians and medical students.
Dr. Kellam was also an educational force, serving for almost 50 years as Chairman of Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital's radiology department and providing daily, 7:00 am lectures to his radiology residents. Over the years Dr. Kellam trained over 100 radiologists who now carry on his legacy.
"The osteopathic profession has lost two extremely valuable educators, leaders, and friends. Their contributions to education, patient care and leadership in health policy were immeasurable and their influence will be sorely missed by many organizations and the people that they touched," said Bruce Wolf, DO FACOR, and Past President of the MOA.

MOA Website and Event registration upgrade
The Michigan Osteopathic Association will be upgrading the domoa.org website and the membership database over the next two weeks. Membership login will be suspended during this time in order to complete the upgrade. The new system promises to provide a more intuitive environment making it easier to access profile information, pay membership dues and register for events.

MOA Student Liaison Committee Meets for 2018
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) Student Liaison Committee held a 'meet and greet' in Brighton, MI. The East Lansing, Detroit Medical Center (DMC) and the Macomb University Center (MUC) campuses of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) met to review 2017 and plan for 2018. The topics included the MOA Presidential Lunch, the Governmental Affairs Lunch and the Student Track for the MOA's 119th Annual Spring Scientific Convention to be held in May.
The MOA reaches out to MSUCOM through the Student Liaisons and by seating a student as a member of the MOA Board of Trustees.
"Once again we have a wonderful group of students. Year after year, it amazes me how energized and engaged this group is," said Terry Trombley, MOA Staff Support for the Student Liaison Committee.

MAPS Now Equipped with Real-time Data Analysis
The new
Michigan Automated Prescription System (MAPS) is now equipped with Appriss Health's NarxCare, a data analysis solution to improve patient care and combat the opioid epidemic in Michigan.
As of December 2017, health professionals can access NarxCare within the Appriss Health PMP AWARxE platform. NarxCare is a robust analytics and care management solution that automatically analyzes MAPS data and a patient's health history, and provides an interactive visualization of usage patterns to help identify potential risk factors. MAPS is administered by the Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).

Physician shortages have states offering perks to new doctors. Is it working?
The competition to entice physicians to stay put is just beginning. Medical schools, hospitals and state legislators are forgiving student loan debt, establishing mentorships and doing whatever it takes to keep physicians newly finished with residency in their states.
On the high end, California-a state with many open positions-keeps about 70% of residents and fellows trained in-state. Smaller states like New Hampshire, where jobs are more difficult to find, retain 28% of doctors after training. The data comes from the Association of American Medical Colleges's 2017 State Physician Workforce Data Report.

CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is now accepting nominations for the 2018 CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award! The CDC Childhood Immunization Champion Award is an annual award that recognizes individuals who make a significant contribution toward improving public health through their work in childhood immunization.
Immunization champions can include coalition members, parent advocates, healthcare professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, physicians' assistants, nurse practitioners, and medical assistants), and other immunization leaders who meet the award criteria. Self-nominations are welcome, or you may submit an application for a deserving individual.
State immunization program managers, state and federal government employees of health agencies, individuals who have been affiliated with and/or employed by pharmaceutical companies, and those who have already received the award are not eligible to apply.
Awardees will be announced during National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW), which runs April 21-28 in 2018. Champions will receive a certificate of recognition, will be featured on CDC's web site, and will be recognized by MDHHS.
Please submit completed nominations to the MDHHS Division of Immunization, Attention: Stefanie Cole ([email protected]) no later than Friday, February 2, 2018.

MOA's Dr. Morrone Appointed to Impaired Driving Safety Commission
The Impaired Driving Safety Commission was created to research the level of ingested medical marihuana/THC that may affect safe driving. The commission is housed within the Department of State Police and will exist until it submits a final report to the Governor, Senate Majority Leader, and Speaker of the House or until March 21, 2019.
