Full Worm Moon

moon meadow

This month we see the first full moon of the Spring season fall on the actual day of the Spring Equinox!  Native American tribes often called this moon the Full Worm Moon as the ground is no longer frozen and the earthworms soon reappear inviting the Spring birds to return.  Other variations among tribes include the Full Crow Moon, The Full Crust Moon and The Full Sap Moon.

**Consider taking a Listening Walk a few evenings this month to listen to the nighttime sounds with your children.

Spring Nature Space

Take time to put away the winter items on your Nature Space and to incorporate a spring theme.  You may wish to change to the silks or cloths to pinks, whites, light blue or other pastel type colors.  You can add a vase of fresh flowers, an empty bird's nest, small wool animals and other spring items that you find on your nature walks.  You may also like to have your children create a spring painting using watercolors that you can add to your nature space.

Colors & Light in Our Environments

What colors and light sources are you using in your classroom and/or home?

Color has a deep effect on us and can often set a mood as we enter a space.  Primary colors that are typically used in childcare settings and school environments can often been harsh and irritating.

Soft colors and natural light soothe the senses.  Take time this month to make small changes to your classroom or home.

Open up the blinds and remove anything blocking the natural light sources.  Add sun catchers, prisms and crystals to your décor.  If you are looking to change your wall color, consider a technique called 'lazure' which is actually layers of very thin colors on top of on another or soft pastel colors.

Spring Soup

Ingredients

1 quart vegetable or chicken broth

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 leek, white parts only, washed well and

sliced thinly into rings

1/2 pound asparagus tips

1/4 pound baby spinach, stems removed

1 tablespoons Italian (flat leaf) parsley,

coarsely chopped

1/2 cup cooked brown rice

1 cup cooked white beans

sea salt and freshly-ground black pepper,

to taste

Directions

In a large, heavy soup pot, saute the

leeks in the olive oil until softened, then

grain bread

Make ahead tip: this soup freezes

Pot of Gold Hunt

Supplies Needed:
VERY long rainbow colored ribbon or various colors of ribbon tied together to create an incredibly long stretch of ribbon
Small Pot
Small Tokens, Toys, Candy, Treats, Etc.

Before the children arrive or wake up in the morning, run your ribbon starting from your door leading outside all over, up, down, around, under and across your entire back or front yard creating a maze.  At the very end of the maze place a small pot filled with tokens, toys, candy and treats to symbolize the Pot of Gold at the end of a rainbow.  Have the children follow the ribbon to find the Leprechaun's Pot of Gold.

This year we are giving Backyard Maple Syruping a step up and tapped 10 of our sugar maples here in Connecticut.  Have you ever tried it yourself?  Share your experiences with us on the Little Acorn Learning Blog

Simple Butterfly Mobile for Spring

Supplies Needed:

Wool roving in various colors
Light colored thread
Two branches (ours were cut from our blooming forsythia in our yard)

Tutorial:

To begin, lay colored roving out in strips.

To make one butterfly, tie the two ends of a strip together into a knot, being sure to leave the ends long enough to be your "antennas".

Squeeze the loop together as you see here:

now take a smaller strip of white (or alternate) color wool roving and wrap around and around the center of your butterfly until you cannot wrap it anymore.
This will keep your butterfly together.

To make a mobile out of these little butterflies, simple crisscross the two branches together and adhere tightly with thread making a loop on top for hanging.  Next tie your butterflies onto long pieces of thread in various lengths and weights.  The tricky part now is finding your balance.  Hang your branches up first and very carefully experiment with placement of your butterfly threads until the mobile balances just right.  Tie knots to keep in place.
This beautiful mobile can be hung inside or out.  If you use real wool and natural thread the materials are safe for the environment.  Just maybe a few little birdies will come along and use your wool for their spring nests?

Caregiver's Meditation:  Creating Color

"The white light streams down to be broken up by those human prisms into all the colors of the rainbow. Take your own color in the pattern and be just that". ~ Charles R. Brown

Each of us has been given our own color and light that we are to share with the rest of the world.  What are your true colors?  How can you best serve humanity and those around you?  Meditate on what your unique talents, desires and gifts are.  Then, consider how you can use them to the best of your ability in all aspects of your life.  This can be a life changing process if you are truthful with yourself.
