Hike With HCCA
Thursday, April 16th 10am - 2pm
&
Monday, June 18th, 9am - 1pm
Patuxent Branch Trail
9190 Old Guilford Road, Columbia, MD 21046

Join Harper's Choice Community Association for a breathtaking hike while experiencing some of Columbia's history.

We'll trek 4.6 miles on the Patuxent Branch Trail that leads you along the Patuxent River from Savage Park to Lake Elkhorn. Along the way are interpretive signs and the historic Guilford Pratt Truss Bridge that spans the Little Patuxent River along Old Guilford Road. The mostly paved pathway provides you with the perfect hiking or biking trail. Runners will also enjoy the variety of terrain that offers challenges for all ability levels. Wildlife is abundant, so bird watching is also a favorite pastime for users of this trail. Make sure to pack your lunch; midway through our hike we'll stop and have a leisurely meal before wrapping up the rest of the trail.

Going Green in Harper's Choice!

Rain Gardens  are areas created to absorb and filter runoff from roofs, driveways and other impervious surfaces.  Rain gardens are planted with native plants adapted for high levels of water, which help to hold runoff and filter pollutants while water slowly soaks into the ground.  You may qualify for a cost-share program sponsored by CA.  To find out more, click here or email John McCoy.

Rain Barrels  collect and store water runoff from roof downspouts to be reused for landscape, car washing or other outdoor uses where non-potable water is acceptable.  Because they reuse water, rain barrels are a practical conservation tool and reduce our demand on treated tap water.

Environmental Site Design  is the new buzzphrase, but our choices of plants, landscape materials and design, and garden practices have an enormous impact on our outdoor water use.  Lawns require two-and-a-half to four times more water than shrubs and trees.  Consider creating a plan for your property and rethink your lawn.  Help keep water on site, replenish ground water and use native plants.  Audubon At Home has some great tips to help you on this journey.
Be sure to consult with your Village Covenant Advisor to determine if an approval is required for the work planned or for more information on property issues.
