Here at St John, we meet once a month, on the second Wednesday, with those interested in learning more about Catholicism, about our church, and about our faith. The meetings are casual, with plenty of time for questions and discussion, and are open to all!

The next meeting is Wednesday, March 13th at 7pm.  
We will meet in the new Admin Building (former Rectory).

Stations of the Cross during Lent
There will be NO Stations of the Cross the second Wednesdays during Lent. Join us instead every Friday during Lent at 7pm and on March 8, 22, 29 and April 5 and 12 at 2:30pm with the school community and Shadow Stations on Good Friday at 2:00pm presented by the 7th grade students.


The Funeral Mass for Beatrice Castona will be held on Friday, March 15 at 11am.  A rosary will be said on Thursday, March 14th at 7pm in the church. There will be a reception after the mass in Egan Hall. All are welcome.

We'll be wearing our green, to make green for the school Sunday, March 17th after both masses !


NOVENA OF GRACE: GOD WALKING WITH US
Tuesday (3/12) through Wednesday (3/20)
Deepen your experience of Lent this year by entering into Novena of Grace, a retreat that can be made amid the busyness of daily life. Take just one hour a day to attend the retreat either at the Chapel of St. Ignatius on the campus of Seattle U (12:30pm weekdays; Eucharist) or St. Joseph Church (6:30pm weekdays; contemplative prayer), or make the retreat online. Attend any or all of the nine days to experience God's abundant grace!
 
DISCUSSION SERIES
Please join us for a discussion on the Holy Spirit led by Father Crispin this Thursday, March 14, at 7:00 pm in the parish admin building.  Father will also lead a shorter discussion on the same topic after daily Thursday mass.  
 
STATIONS OF THE CROSS  will be held every Friday of Lent at 7:00 pm in the church.  
 
WEEKLY PRAYER GROUP :  Every Thursday of Lent, we will have a prayer group meeting from 7:00 - 8:00 pm in the parish admin building.  Our inspiration for discussion will come from Bishop Barron's Word on Fire Lenten Reflections.  You can take home a book with the reflections or sign up to get them emailed to you every day this Lent! 
 
SERVICE : 
  • March 30, up to 20 parishioners are invited to meet on the playground at 10:30 and head to St. Vincent de Paul in Sodo. 
    We will sort and help distribute food to people in need, and we'll return by 2:30.     
  • April 6, up to 20 parishioners will meet at 8:30 and head to Northwest Harvest in Kent.  We'll bond over sorting food to be sent
    to many food banks across the city, and we'll return by 11:45.

St John Book Club
Please join us for our next book club where we will be reading Bearing False Witness: Debunking Centuries of Anti-Catholic History by Rodney Stark. He is one of the "most highly regarded sociologists of religion and argues that some of our most firmly held ideas about history, ideas that paint the Catholic Church in the least positive light are, in fact, fiction. In each chapter, Stark takes on a well-established anti-Catholic myth, gives a fascinating history of how each myth became the conventional wisdom, and presents a startling picture of the real truth". 

 

The book club is open to everyone even if you didn't finish the book. We also embrace all forms of media including audio books and movies, so please join us at our next book club meeting on  Thursday, March 21st. (NEW DATE) at 6pm in the Mezzanine.

Lent is a season of repentance.  It's the fast before the feast of Easter, the holiest day in the Christian calendar.  I'm thinking this Lent of a series of Prayer Nuggets on the sacrament of reconciliation.  It's not the case that I go to reconciliation so often that I have insights to offer.  In fact, it's the opposite.  I'm going to share with you some nuggets I've found memorable, in my search for motivation to seek out the sacrament MUCH more regularly.
 
So, first a plan:  The Lenten reconciliation service at St. John's will be Monday evening April 8th at 7:00 pm.  It will be a lovely service, with opportunities for reconciliation, adoration, and quiet prayer in the church.  I hope you'll join me for the service.
 
So, a nugget on reconciliation...Converts frequently are able to point out the beauty of Catholicism, because they look with fresh eyes.  Leah Libresco is a whip-smart young woman who entered Yale a committed atheist.  She blogged about atheism, debating believers about the merits of faith.  In the process of seeking the best and truest arguments against faith, she actually reasoned herself to belief, and entered the Catholic church while still at Yale.  She's a lovely speaker about her faith journey (look her up on YouTube), and has written a delightful book titled, Arriving at Amen: Seven Catholic Prayers That Even I can Offer.  The second chapter is on Confession.  By way of review, I'll give you a few quotes:
 
I was surprised to find that it [confession] was my favorite sacrament. (p.21)
 
If Catholicism isn't unique in diagnosing our weakness, it is unusual in offering us a treatment. (p.23)
 
I wish I could be anesthetized or restrained, so that I submit to treatment without the option to flinch away and disrupt the operation, but that would be shirking the only contribution I can make to the procedure. (p. 30)
 
When I lay aside sins and ask for the grace to go forth and sin no more, I am being more human than ever, for the common vocation of all humans is sainthood. (p.33)
 
The way Jesus mends me reminds me of a Japanese ceramics technique called kingtsugi, in which valuable ceramics that are cracked or broken are fixed using a very unusual glue.  The craftsman mixes gold dust with a special resin and uses this adhesive mixture to fill in the new cracks or to piece the entire pot back together.  After the bond has set, the crack is still visible, but now it resembles a vein of pure gold.  This is a kind of mending that draws attention to itself. (p.33)
