Nominate a Bold and Fearless Woman for the 2019 Christi Anderson Personal Innovation Award

Christi Anderson was one of the first board members for IWL, as well as a mentor, a friend, an advocate for women's leadership,  a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and attorney.  Christi was passionate about helping other women in leadership, and we honor Christi by awarding a scholarship every year to a woman who is looking to innovate herself, to be better and do better - just like Christi did, and who could benefit from the financial assistance to do so.

It is our hope that this award will create opportunities for these young women and inspire them to lead their lives boldly and fearlessly and with the tenacity of our dear friend, Christi.  If you know a bold and innovative woman who deserves this year's award, please nominate her. Donations can also be made to the scholarship fund.

Featuring Demetria Miles-McDonald

Wednesday, March 27, 2019
8:00am - 10:00am
United Way of Central Indiana
2955 N. Meridian St.
Indianapolis, IN 46208

One of our Louisville IWL champions and speakers is coming to Indy!

Demetria Miles-McDonald is the Founder and CEO of Decide Diversity, a company focused on increasing the presence and effectiveness of underrepresented groups in the workplace, specifically in leadership positions.

Today's version of diversity covers, among many other things: gender, race, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion, and veteran status. Everyone fits nicely into these groups. What happens when people identify with more than one of these groups? It's time to expand our definition of diversity and get back to its roots: uniqueness and individuality. It's time to talk about intersectionality. In this session, attendees will
  • Learn the concept and history of intersectionality and how it fills the gap traditional diversity and inclusion programs create
  • Recognize and examine their own intersectional identities and how you utilize that uniqueness at work
  • Analyze the intersectional diversity in their organization and the competitive edge it gives
  • Discover their role in incorporating intersectionality into their diversity and inclusion initiatives

Linking Indy Women
#IWillClosetheGap
Featuring Jill Trimmel

Wednesday, March 27, 2019
7:30am - 9:00am
The Hatch
6161 Hillside Ave
Indianapolis, IN 46220

From Enterprise Rent-A-Car, to Progressive Insurance, to Manhattan's Financial District, to consulting, Jill has pressed through her career often the only woman at the table, and the first woman at the table - sometimes realizing the only progress was the men at that table knowing where the women's bathroom was located relative to the boardroom. That was change, right?

After taking some time off with her family and friends to re-evaluate her next steps,  she asked herself:  "What impact have I made after twenty years, if I am still the only women in the room?"

Her journey to understand where women stand and what she could do to progress the position for all women began!  Jill was bewildered by her findings, and more so how little was being done and how few wanted to talk about action. She committed to ongoing research; studies, books, articles, opinions, policies, etc. on Equal Pay.  As her understanding developed, she created #iwillclosethegap, a platform to transform where women stand.

CELEBRATE WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH WITH A DONATION TO IWL FOUNDATION

Help us have a greater impact. While we're proud of the progress that's been made, we know how far there still is to go to move the needle on gender equity.

Your donation contributes to equipping women with the tools to connect, grow and advance as leaders and activating men as allies to support their progress.

The month of March is a time for us to honor and remember the women who made progress before us, as well as recognize the progress still yet to be made. How are you celebrating the women in your life?

International Women's Day  was last Thursday, with the global campaign #BalanceforBetter serving as a call-to-action for driving gender balance across the world. The movement toward gender equity must be more than just one day.

Not sure how to celebrate Women's History Month and International Women's Day at work? Here are a few ideas from organizations in our community:
  • Host a networking event with your women's employee resource group using women owned businesses as vendors.
  • Create a social media page internally for people to post pictures, quotes, and team activities. Use the hashtag #BalanceforBetter to participate in the international social media campaign.
  • Share company resources that your female employees might find valuable.
  • Bring in a female speaker with a message of empowerment.
  • Plan a group volunteer project with an organization that benefits women.
  • Encourage the men in your organization to reach out to a female coworker they may not have gotten to know yet to get together over lunch or coffee. Use this as an opportunity to engage your allies!
IWL is a resource for you and your organization on the journey to gender equity. Let us know how we can help at [email protected]. We look forward to connecting with you!

"My IWL Impact Story:  Living Out Loud as Conference Co-Emcee"
By Latisha Schmitt
IT Inclusion and Diversity Leader, Humana
5th Annual IWL Louisville Conference Co-Emcee

To celebrate our 10th year as an organization, we are sharing some of the incredible stories that we've heard from people whose lives and leadership journeys have been positively impacted by IWL Foundation. Hear from Latisha Schmitt on why she's excited to be on the mainstage at the IWL Conference on April 25!

" Eighteen years into my technology career, I had a deep awakening that I needed to make a significant shift in the trajectory of my professional future.  I was working on my well-being and the better I felt about myself personally, it became clearer that I wanted to give to others in a purposeful way.  I shifted from leading people, processes and technology in my company to leading Inclusion and Diversity for the IT organization. It was then that I had my first opportunity to attend the Louisville Integrating Women Leaders' conference and wow, was I ready!"

"Better Together" with Krieg DeVault

This past month, the IWL team delivered a customized "Better Together" workshop to the entire Krieg DeVault firm, including their remote offices. IWL CEO, Kim Graham Lee, delivered this interactive workshop which explored the concepts of intersectionality, unconscious bias, what it means to be an ally and live it, having "courageous conversations" in the workplace, and acting with intentionality to embrace a more diverse and inclusive talent bench.  Participants walked away with some key takeaways:
  • We all have qualities and experiences that make us unique, but some of us have more privilege because of those qualities.
  • For a woman or minority in the workplace, the road to career advancement can be longer and more difficult.
  • Diversity is about having different people at the table, while inclusion is about making sure those different people feel like they belong at the table.
  • Men AND women need to be allies to one another to create a workplace of respect.
It's inspiring to see firms like Krieg DeVault prioritizing diversity and inclusion initiatives and being intentional about moving the needle on gender equity. Thank you, Krieg DeVault, for partnering with IWL.

If you are interested in bringing IWL into your organization to facilitate a workshop, please contact Kim Graham Lee at [email protected].
2019 Indy Chamber Women In Business Retreat:
"Inspire. Influence. Impact."
Conscious Capitalism is a global movement focused on running your business in a better way --  with a focus on the long-term (not just short-term gains) and creating wins for all stakeholders (not just shareholders/investors).
Kim Graham Lee with Jacqueline Troy, Director of the Central Indiana Women's Business Center (CIWBC) and the organizer behind the 2019 Indy Chamber Women in Business Retreat.

As volunteer Co-Founder/Co-President of Conscious Capitalism Indianapolis, IWL CEO,  Kim Graham Lee, spoke on "How the Rise of Feminine Values Will Propel Leaders, Organizations, and Humanity" at the  Indy Chamber Women In Business Retreat.  100+ women engaged in this interactive breakout, and walked away with some key learnings:
  • In the modern workplace, companies need more of the strengths that are considered "feminine" characteristics.
  • Participants gained personal insight on how masculine/feminine their natural leadership style is.
  • Four key principles or tenets are part of the Conscious Capitalism philosophy - Higher Purpose, Stakeholder Integration, Conscious Leadership, Conscious Culture
  • The purpose of the Indianapolis chapter, #37 in the world, is to help Indianapolis companies discover, embrace and embed these principles.
Thanks to the Indy Chamber for including Kim as a featured speaker. It was also a great opportunity for her to share how she is leading IWL in a "conscious" way, with a higher purpose to advance female talent -- bettering our homes, businesses, communities and world.
10th Annual  IWL Indianapolis Conference:

We're celebrating a milestone year with the biggest and best IWL conference yet - and a compelling theme: Uniting Our Power.  The 10th Annual IWL Conference will focus on how we can unite the power of the many who show up, speak up and stand tall to advance the inclusion conversation in our companies, our homes and in our communities.

Join 1,500 women and men at the JW Marriott on September 16, 2019 for a day you won't want to miss! Learn more on our website. Registration opens June 1.

If your company is interested in being a corporate sponsor of the IWL Conference, please contact IWL CEO, Kim Graham Lee, at [email protected].

In honor of Women's History Month, the theme of this month is balance. Last week you may have seen people posting photos with the hashtag #BalanceforBetter. This was the global theme for International Women's Day, because g ender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Balance is also essential for us to thrive personally. Women are constantly juggling stressors at work and at home . Take some time this month to do something that brings you back to earth when life gets hectic. Whether it's making art, journaling, exercising, or simply taking a walk outside, block time on your calendar to do something that's just for you, and hold that time the same way you would an important work meeting. Recognize that the best thing you have to offer is the most whole version of you - whatever that looks like. Let's spend this month celebrating #BalanceforBetter by finding our own individual balance

Thank you to our 2019 Conference Sponsors... and there's still an opportunity to join!
